Abstract

Rock slope stability analysis in a geotechnical study is an important issue in mining engineering. Kinematic analysis is a well-known method to determine potential failures of the rock slope based on structural orientations, but it sometimes disregards the structural properties information. Structural properties are often known as the highly interpreted domains in rock slope engineering; thus, simplification was made for the analysis. Simplification may lead to vague conditions of analysis and reduce its accuracy. Therefore, the aims of this research is to assess the effect of rock structure properties such as heterogeneity, discontinuity, and anisotropic properties of the rock mass. The assessment conducted using the limit-equilibrium method employed the Generalized Anisotropic (GA) material model were compared with finite element method (FEM) using the shear strength reduction (SSR) method employing the joint network rock mass model. The analysis results show that an actual rock slope with a generalized anisotropic material model in the LEM analysis and joint network material model in the FEM analysis is stable with Safety Factor > 1, and the maximum strain model is less than the minimum strain threshold (maximum strain < 0.1). Combining rock slope stability analysis methods aims to produce accurate and representative results regarding the rock mass' condition. This research improves the interpretation of rock slope stability analyses, resulting in a more accurate estimation of the factor of safety (FOS).

Abstract

Abstract

Discontinuity in a rock mass has an influence on the stability of a rock slope because it is one of the controlling factors of slope failure. In this study, an analysis was carried out on the role of discontinuities, namely joints and lithic tuff layers on slope stability and the effect of persistent parameters and joint roughness on the safety factor of safety factor. The analysis used is the effect of changes in the thickness of the lithic tuff, persistence and the value of joint roughness on the value of the safety factor. Processing of slope stability data using Rocscience RS2 Software with Finite Element Method modeling with rock mass modeling used in the analysis, namely the Veneziano Model. The results showed that an increase in the thickness of the lithic tuff layer resulted in a decrease in the safety factor of the slope up to 1.37%. The effect of the persistence parameter on the slope safety factor was found that the higher the persistence value, the lower the slope safety factor value up to 2,9% and changes in the JRC value decreased the safety factor value up to 1,7%.

Abstract

Indonesia, with its tropical climate and high rainfall, especially near the equator, is prone to slope instability influenced by intense rainfall events. Rainfall increases pore water pressure, reduces effective stress, and decreases shear strength, which in turn lowers the safety factor and increases the probability of failure. However, studies on pore pressure changes during rainfall infiltration have not been extensively studied, particularly in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the effect of rainfall on the stability of a single slope in a waste dump using a numerical method based on a coupled hydro-mechanical approach. Simulations were conducted using transient finite element analysis (TFEA) to evaluate pore water pressure variations. In addition, the limit equilibrium method (LEM) modeling was also carried out to assess changes in slope safety factors. The analysis was performed using Slide2 software under various rainfall and duration scenarios, with a total of 1,568 model combinations over a 24-hour simulation period. The results show that rainfall events reduce the safety factor value by up to 31.54%. The relationship between the safety factor value and rainfall can be expressed by the equation FK = 2,1607 CH-0,05, which shows a strong correlation with an R2 value of 0,9309.
