Abstract

The main goal of this study is to describe the anxiety and uncertainty management of refugees in Semarang. The research dive deeper into understanding and describing the communication anxiety and uncertainty faces by asylum seekers in Semarang and their struggle to manage it during their interval time for the asylum opportunities. The result of the study itself shows how the anxiety cause by dangerous is their migration journey and their living condition in Indonesia. With limited chance to form an effective communicate with the responsible immigration and United Nations representatives, the asylum seeker force to cope with current and very underwhelming living condition as well as limited access to public service without any meaningful solution or any communications process. There are also evidence of the how the refugees trying to make sense of the situation and starting to open them self to the local in order to reduce their anxiety. It is also worth to mention, even in the limited chance to make any impactful interaction with the IOM in Indonesia, the refugees found ways to extract information about their asylum status in which lower their feeling of uncertainty during this trying time.

Abstract

Abstract: This study focuses on exploring the use of Fantasy Theme Analysis for examining local interpretation on global media texts, particularly the way in which Indonesian girls interpret Disney princesses. The main theory used in this research is Symbolic Convergence Theory in which the theory is used as a tool to analyze the chain of meanings. This research uses fantasy themes analysis as the method of analysis. The results indicate that the girls perceive the beauty images constructed by Disney as ideal. Consequently, they have negative perception to the dominant physical characteristics of Indonesian women.Keywords: beauty codes, fantasy themes analysis, feminine codes, local meaningsAbstrak: Penelitian ini fokus pada eksplorasi penggunaan analisis tema fantasi untuk melihat pemaknaan lokal terhadap produk global melalui interpretasi anak perempuan di Indonesia terhadap film putri Disney. Teori utama yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Teori Konvergensi Simbollik dengan analisis tema fantasi sebagai metode. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa anak-anak perempuan menempatkan konstruksi kecantikan oleh Disney sebagai kecantikan yang ideal, sehingga mereka cenderung memiliki persepsi negatif terhadap karakteristik fisik dominan yang dimiliki oleh sebagian besar perempuan Indonesia.Kata Kunci: analisis tema fantasi, kode feminin, pemaknaan kecantikan, pemaknaan lokal

Abstract

The advancement of internet and communication technologies encouraged the growth of virtual groups. In the meanwhile, video games were getting more common and popular to be played. Virtual groups based on video games bloomed because of these two things. Budak MMR is one of the many existing video game based virtual groups. This phenomenon of video game based virtual groups growth can be considered something new. Both virtual and gamer groups are not completely understood and misconceptions about them are not uncommon. This research tries to grasp the sense of community and converged symbolic fantasies as the result of interactions occurring inside Budak MMR, a virtual group based off a video game namely Dota 2. This research is a qualitative research with an autoethnography method which uses the researcher’s experience as a research subject. The theories used in the research are sense of community theory, symbolic convergence theory, and group cohesivity. In-depth interview on a few members of Budak MMR and narrative reflections were used as the measures of collecting data. The findings show that sense of community exists in Budak MMR, from the element of membership, influence, fulfillment of needs, to emotional connection. Fantasies from symbolic convergence in Budak MMR take form in inside jokes, role-playing, and speech codes. Jokes told there are jokes concerning happening situations and also jokes about sensitive matters. Role-playing in Budak MMR is mainly about interaction between lecturer and students. Speech code used there is about status and emotional expression. This research also found few implications on sense of community and convergence symbolic theory.

Abstract

Phenomenon of multicultural society in Indonesia should not be a barrier for people to live in harmony. However, in reality, the cultural differences often causes conflict, especially among minorities, one of them is Papuan ethnic who experience discrimination. Then, it becomes a new problem how they return to live with the society after the conflict happened. This study uses a qualitative method, with an interpretive paradigm and a phenomenological approach. The data collected with in-depth interview technique. The theories used in this study are acculturation process theory, integrative theory of cross-cultural adaptation and face negotiation theory. The results of this study reveal that, (1) the process of re-adaptation is a dynamic process of stress-adaptation that related to the previous communication to encourage individual to take certain communication actions at the next phase. (2) this process occurs through three phases, the recovery phase, the initiation of communication phase and the assimilation phase. The recovery phase is an individual’s effort to prepare and reduce post-conflict stress before returning to society. The initiation of communication phase is an individual’s effort to open communication acess opportunities with the society and The final phase is assimilation phase is an individual’s attempt to balance their identity by collaborating their old culture with the new culture through communication strategies. (3) the process of re-adaptation doesn’t always run smoothly due to communication barrier, there are post-conflict stereotypes and affected by other conflict. (4) There are the different of communication strategies between individual who live alone and live in a group. For individual who live alone or self-concerned, the communication strategies carried out by starting to use Javanese and being friendly. Meanwhile, individual who live in a group or mutual-concern have more responsibility for their fellow members, manage the group structure, repair group facilities, build and maintain communication between group members and the society. This communication strategy resulted a better relationship stage before the conflict happened.

Abstract

Siti is one of the many movies that portray women with a perspective that is rarely found in Indonesia earlier movies. Women in Indonesia earlier movies are often represented as a figure that does not have a choice, always subject to the dominance and masculinity shown by men. This study aims to describe the radicalism of women in patriarchal Javanese culture represented in the Siti movie. This type of research is qualitative research with semiotic approach. The analytical techniques used in this study is based on the concept of The Codes of Television presented by John Fiske. In analyzing the moving object, Fiske analyzes it in three levels: Reality level, Representation level, and Ideology level. Reality and Representation levels are analyzed syntagmatically. While the level of ideology is analyzed paradigmatically. The results of this study indicate that Siti is a radical (a radical-cultural that also radical-libertarian). This can be seen through the elements of radicalism represented by Siti. These elements appear at the level of Reality, Representation, and Ideology. Siti is a manifestation of the representation of women that appears in Indonesian movies produced after reformation. As an active woman, she is able to escape the objectification of men, and able to become a subject whose can determine her own life. Siti's courage was not only shown when she appeared masculine and served as the main economic support of her family. However, Siti's courage was also displayed through her emphasis on feminine values in the community. Through emphasizing these feminine values, Siti scheming against her weaknesses as a woman who is in a patriarchal culture.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh penggunaan materi SARA (Suku, Agama, Ras, danAntar Golongan) dalam berkomedi di media sosial. Sacha Stevenson membuat videokomedi bermaterikan SARA di jejaring sosial Youtube dan memiliki banyak penontonyang menyukainya. Pesan SARA ini seharusnya dapat menyinggung khalayak, tapiterdistorsi dengan adanya humor. Oleh karena itu tujuan penelitian ini adalah untukmelihat keberagaman pemaknaan yang terjadi mengenai materi SARA dalam videoSacha Stevenson. Mitos Roland Barthes digunakan untuk memahami proses distorsihumor SARA dalam video ini. Analisis sintagmatik dan paradigmatik John Fiskedigunakan untuk mengetahui makna yang ditawarkan oleh media. Penelitian inimenggunakan pendekatan kualitatif-deskriptif dengan metode analisis resepsi StuartHall. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan indepth interview kepada delapaninforman yang telah menonton video Sacha Stevenson dari Etnis Tionghoa, SukuSunda, dan beragama Islam.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan khalayak pada posisi dominan sepakat denganpesan yang ditawarakan oleh media karena sesuai dengan gambaran kebiasaan EtnisTionghoa, Suku Sunda, dan Agama Islam di Indonesia. Informan yang berada padaposisi negosiasi hanya sepakat dengan sebagian gambaran tersebut dan merekamemiliki aturan khusus yaitu penggambaran dalam video tersebut terlalaumendiskriminasi dan mendiskriditkan Etnis Tionghoa, Suku Sunda, dan Agama Islamdi Indonesia. Mereka yang berada pada posisi oposisi, sama sekali tidak sepakat denganpesan media tersebut karena terlalu mendiskriminasi dan sama sekali tidakmenggambarkan Etnis Tionghoa, Suku Sunda, dan Agama Islam di Indonesia.Sebagian besar informan yang berada dalam posisi negosiasi menunjukan bahwamereka menerima pesan SARA yang dibawakan dalam konteks humor namun tetapmenganggap diskriminasi terjadi di dalamnya. Hasil penelitian observasi menunjukkanbahwa khalayak sepakat dengan sebagian pesan media dan memiliki aturan khususkarena mereka berasal dari etnis, usia, serta pendidikan yang berbeda. Hal inimenunjukan bahwa mitos mampu mendistorsi pesan SARA sehingga dapat diterimaoleh khalayak namun tidak secara dominan, karena khalayak juga memproses pesanbedasarkan latar belakang, pengalaman, serta kondisi sosial mereka, akibatnyawalaupun informan menerima sebagaian pesan yang ditawarkan media namun merekatetap menganggap video tersebut merupakan bentuk diskriminasi terhadap EtnisTionghoa, Suku Sunda, dan Agama Islam yang ada di Indonesia.

Abstract

This research discuss how Indonesian underage K-Pop fans interprets of BIGBANG’s Bae Bae music video. BIGBANG Bae Bae music video get label 19 (R-Rated) and is not allowed to air on music program on one of Korea's national television. However, this music video is not age-restricted and can be easily accessed by Indonesian fans on Youtube. BIGBANG has leaked the concept of its music video specifically for audiences 19 years and older. The aim of this research is to find out Indonesian underage K-Pop Fans Reception of BIGBANG R-Rated Music Video. This research uses Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis to determine the preferred reading and Stuart Hall's reception analysis to find the audiences reception category in dominant, negotiated, or oppositional. The research results showed that most informants interpreted Bae Bae's music video in a negotiated reading. This is because of the three informants have interpreted the music video in accordance with the preferred reading. However, there are other messages that are interpreted based on the personal opinions of each informant after finding out from the lyrics of the Bae Bae song and the contents of the music video story as well as their assumption about the music video in question is the work of art from music makers.

Abstract

Penelitian ini didasarkan dari keunikan kebudayaan pada sistem keluarga matrilineal Etnis Minangkabau yang mana adat dan tradisinya merupakan gabungan dari hukum islam dan sistem budaya matrilineal. Etnis Minangkabau menjadi etnis terbesar di dunia yang menganut sistem matrilineal, di mana dalam kepercayaannya perempuan menjadi pemilik kekuasaan tertinggi di dalam keluarga. Namun masuknya hukum-hukum Islam dan menjadi agama utama yang dianut masyarakat di Minangkabau menyebabkan pencampuran budaya di dalamnya. Pembaruan kebudayaan tersebut membentuk beberapa perubahan di dalam tradisi masyarakat yang sebelumnya hanya matrilineal, salah satunya pada posisi perempuan dalam keluarga. Maka dari itu, penelitian ini ingin mengetahui bagaimana proses pengambilan keputusan dalam keluarga matrilineal untuk melihat posisi perempuan yang sebenarnya di masyarakat Etnis Minangkabau. Penelitian ini menggunakan model konvergensi komunikasi, multistep flow model, konsep kekuasaan dan otoritas keluarga Etnis Minangkabau. Paradigma yang digunakan yaitu post positivistic dengan tipe penelitian deskriptif. Analisis jaringan membantu penelitian ini dalam menggambarkan arus komunikasi yang terbentuk, peran-peran di dalam jaringan, sehingga mampu menunjukkan posisi perempuan di dalam keluarga matrilineal yang sebenarnya. Analisis data dari penelitian ini menggunakan tiga bentuk level dalam analisis jaringan komunikasi, yaitu level individu, level klik, dan level sistem. Proses wawancara di lakukan langsung di Kampung Tanjung Pisang, Sintuk, Kec. Sintuk Toboh Gadang, Kab/Kot. Padang Pariaman, Prov. Sumatera Barat, dengan dua keluarga utama penelitian ini berasal dari Suku Jambak dan Suku Sikumbang. Hasil dari penelitian diperoleh dari wawancara langsung kepada dua keluarga saparuik dan beberapa istri sumandan. Kemudian hasil wawancara dari pertanyaan sosiometri diolah melalui software UCINET 6.4 Social Network Analysis. Berdasarkan hasil yang ditemukan yang terkait dengan posisi perempuan matrilineal, ditemukan bahwa laki-laki masih mendominasi dalam proses penentuan keputusan dibandingkan perempuan. Anggota perempuan masih mengikuti keyakinan bahwa kepada laki-laki lah mereka harus bertanya. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa meskipun Etnis Minangkabau disebut sebagai keluarga matrilineal terbesar di dunia, namun pada kenyataannya sistem yang dianut masihlah patriarki. Perempuan di dalam keluarga belum mendominasi dalam memengaruhi keputusan keluarga.

Abstract

The problem that women face when expressing their bodies through dance on the TikTok application is getting negative comments from the public without the public understanding about the experiences that women go through when dancing on TikTok. The purpose of this study was to determine the meaning of body expression for women. The method used is qualitative research with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis technique and uses Theory of Gender and Nonverbal Communication, Theory of Self-Objectification, and Theory of Existentialist Feminism. From this study it was found that the meaning of body expression for women is (1) body expression as a form of self-freedom; (2) body expressions to show sexiness; (3) body expressions to show the beauty of the face and the beauty of the body; (4) expression of the body as self-actualization. The pattern formed from women's experiences concludes that if the freedom and desires that women want to achieve have unconsciously made women objects and subjects. Women can turn things around through full control over their bodies and show their talents, although in the process women become objects by following the wishes of the audience to look attractive.

Abstract

Komedi situasi merupakan program acara televisi yang saat ini digemari oleh masyarakat. Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang nilai – nilai dominasi maskulin yang terdapat dalam komedi situasi Tetangga Masa Gitu. Penelitian ini dilakukan karena melihat tingginya angka perceraian di Indonesia dan hal tersebut dimulai dari pihak istri yang merasa didominasi oleh laki – laki. Nilai – nilai dominasi maskulin tersebut juga sering terlihat dalam berbagai program – program televisi termasuk program komedi. Adapun tujuan yang ingin dicapai dari penelitian ini, yaitu mendeskripsikan teks yang digunakan untuk memaknai nilai – nilai dominasi maskulin dalam tayangan komedi situasi Tetangga Masa Gitu.Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan metode analisis semiotika. Teknik analisis data yang dilakukan untuk mendeskripsikan teks menggunakan teori John Fiske, yakni “The Codes Of Television” dengan menganalisis teks dalam televisi menjadi tiga level, yaitu level realitas, level representasi, dan level ideologi.Temuan atas penelitian ini menghasilkan bahwa setiap level yang dianalisis pada tiga episode yang dipilih pada komedi situasi Tetangga Masa Gitu terdapat nilai – nilai dominasi maskulin di dalamnya. Level – level tersebut mendeskripsikan dominasi maskulin dalam Tetangga Masa Gitu meliputi nilai – nilai maskulinitas, konstruksi sosial tubuh laki – laki dan perempuan, peran gender dalam sebuah perkawinan, tatanan sosial pembagian kerja laki laki dan perempuan, kekerasan simbolik pada perempuan, dan perlawanan perempuan terhadap dominasi maskulin.
