Abstract

The use of the veil in the midst of a pluralistic Indonesian society reaps various views, including stigma, even though a person has the right to have the freedom to show their identity through clothing. This situation makes veiled women not fully accepted so they need to negotiate their identities, including in the realm of education at the university level. This study aims to understand the experiences of veiled women negotiating their identities in the face of stigma and different views regarding the veil during learning. This study uses the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method with in-depth interviews. The results of the study illustrate that the three informants interpret the veil in relation to religious beliefs that form their self-concept and social identity, namely the three informants see themselves as continuing to maintain attitudes and behavior to conform to their veiled identity. Furthermore, the three informants entered a diverse lecture environment and interacted with friends and lecturers during the learning process. In this case, the three informants faced various differences, including differences in views and the stigma of the veil so that the three informants negotiated to communicate their identities. Based on relation and situation factors, several strategies were found in the negotiating process of the three informants, including avoiding, compromising, competing, accommodating, and collaborating. Through various strategies, the three informants were able to communicate their identities so that they were understood and good relations were established.

Abstract

Cyberbullying is an act of uploading or sending messages or images that are abusive and harmful through the digital media or internet that can happen to anyone, including transgender. This study aims to understand the communication process and mindset that can be the reason for someone to do cyberbullying. Qualitative research methods and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach are used in this study. The theories used as a reference are new media theory, social prejudice theory, and social norm theory. Based on this study, the three informants confirmed the existence of cyberbullying against transgender in social media Instagram. During the 6 (six) months of observation period, there are 3 (three) forms of cyberbullying found, namely flaming, harassment, and denigration. This study found that besides prejudice and social norm embraced by each informant, personal factors such as problems with self-ability, getting influenced by their surroundings, and also envines are the important factors that trigger cyberbullying. In addition, the cyberbullies misinterpret the freedom of expression by using a fake account while they are doing cyberbullying because they feel more comfortable to express their opinion because of the anonymit. The communication process carried out is that the cyberbullies choose whether they want to communicate it to someone else or not and two of the three informants who communicated it to someone else feel that they get a support and also validation so that they consider cyberbullying as a normal thing to do.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the authors' interest in the phenomenon of early marriage that occurs in Banjarnegara. The district is in the top 5 regions with the highest early marriage in Central Java in 2018. Marriage conducted by children is inseparable from the consent of parents because children cannot be said to be stable in decision making. The author conducted interviews with four informants from mothers and four informants from fathers who were having early marriages, with four different villages in Wanayasa. The analysis used phenomenology to see individual experiences in decision making, using interpretive paradigms. This study aims to look at how the communication process of parents' decision making in early marriage to children in Banjarnegara.Based on the results of the study, the authors see that the communication process of parents' decision making in early marriage to children is based on fear in the event of unwanted things such as adultery or pregnancy outside of marriage. The type of family communication among all informants is included in laissez faire because the communication patterns of parents and children are rare to create an incomplete communication relationship. Early marriage has also become a culture in the region and the community seems to perpetuate the phenomenon. An announcement of early marriage was formed that people were more willing to go through the process of dispensation of age in the Religious Courts to get married soon, rather than waiting to be old enough. Socialization from the Government or Social Institutions has also never been felt based on the statements of all informants, this has worsened the social conditions in the community because no one has rectified the phenomenon of seeing the risk of early marriage to the physical and psychological well-being of children, especially for women who will become pregnant.

Abstract

Motherhood has become one of many main narratives that frequently appeared in horror films. Mother has been mainly used as a character who terrorizes and haunts children, specifically. This sort of representation possibly enable stereotypes and giving certain images to mothers in Indonesia, whom majority of people look upon as noble. Film as the portrait of society has been used to establish submission among people towards agendas and interests of authorities. This research aims to examine the representation of motherhood on female ghost character in Pengabdi Setan. Feminist film theory and semiotic communication theory are used for this research. This research will apply Sara Mills’ critical discourse analysis to look deeper on four aspects of examinations consist of character, fragmentation, focalization and schemata. The results indicate that female ghosts characters exhibit the aspects of motherhood. Through their physical (bodily) aspects, characters of Mawarti (1980) and Mawarni (2017) as ghosts, are portrayed as physically non-sexual and desireless. Whereas their maternal roles tend to have corrupt qualities, for trying to egoistically dominate their children’s lives. Fragmentation of maternal bodies of the characters, denote the grotesque and menacing femininity through the depictions of face/head, hands and back. Maternal bodies are portrayed as source of horrors for their children. Focalization in both movies indicate that both ghosts are passive objects. Maternal subjectivities from both ghosts, who also happen to be mothers, are altogether not presented, and rendered through male-oriented point of view (focalization). Schemata finally points that, a mother naturally has superior social role, with the expense of rigid order by dominant ideology. In that case, female roles as mothers are controlled. Female power are viewed as archaic for its nature aligned with transgression. At last, a mother will never wholly empowered, without fulfillment of her prescribed expectations.

Abstract

Abstract

Cases of sexual violence against children have always increased significantly every year. Then to overcome this increase, the government and the President made and passed a chemical castration law. The sentences were made to provide a deterrent effect for perpetrators of sexual violence. However, until now the castration law has actually reaped many pros and cons. Including in the news on Kompas.com and Tribunnews.com which intensively reported castration laws differently. This difference is what initiates the researcher to find out how the two media frame the law of castration and how the two media build the framing of the law. Researchers used social reality construction theory andanalysis framing Robert Entmanto analyze the data. This analytical tool helps researchers to help understand how media packages events by defining problems, estimating the source of problems, making moral decisions and emphasizing resolution. In this way it can be seen how the media Kompas.com and Tribunnews.com frame the same event in the news. The results of the analysis show that there are differences in the frames made by Kompas.com and Tribunnews.com. The Kompas.com frame does not support the law of castration using a legal perspective. Then there are two frames made by Tribunnews.com, namely supporting the law of castration using the victim's perspective and the second frame not supporting the law of castration by packaging news headlines that are different from the content of the news.

Abstract

The meaning of the active audience makes the text in a film has rich meaning. This is because the audience actively produces meaning based on their background, experience and daily life. Film Wonder is a film that strives to show diffable characters as individuals who have potential, just like the general public, and are treated equally by the surrounding environment. However, the Wonder film also tried to show diffable characters by using disable characteristics, such as different people, being marginalized, being objects of jokes and intimidation, and need to be pitied. However, the meaning of an active audience is not necessarily in line with the alternative ideas that media texts offer in the Wonder film. Thus, this study aims to describe the meaning of active audiences towards diffable characters in the Wonder Film. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach and reception analysis method with John Fiske's semiotic television and Stuart Hall's reception data analysis techniques. Research subjects are diffable and non-diffable audiences. The paradigm in this study uses interpretive and the theory used is the Acceptance Theory, the Representation Theory and the Stereotype Theory. The results of this study succeeded in choosing fifteen preferred reading that featured disable and diffable characters in the text offered by the Wonder film. Through the preferred reading, the results of this study indicate that there are differences in the position of the meaning of the audience towards the diffable characters in the Wonder film between non-diffable and diffable informants. Non-diffable informants have a tendency to interpret diffable characters in negotiations. This is because informants interpret diffable characters in a dilemma, where direct interaction with diffable makes informants have a tendency to approve texts that illustrate that diffable have the potential and look like society in general, however, informants' ignorance of diffable groups makes stereotypes and representations that detrimental to participating in the production process of the meaning of the informant. Meanwhile, diffable informants interpreted diffable characters in Wonder films tending to be dominant. The informant said that they were just like the general public, who have emotional and can do excellent in doing a thing very well liked. The meaning arises based on the experience of the informant who directly got achievements and did creations. In the other hand, diffable informants also tend to disagree with texts that are detrimental to groups with diffable, such as discriminating between diffable only from physical forms.

Abstract

Comics that were originally published conventionally, are now publishedvia the internet, known as Webtoon. Webtoon developed in line with the rapiddevelopment of internet content. In the media, it is seen that sexualization is notonly applied to female, but has also been applied to male, especially the mediathat based on female demographics. The Eggnoid, a female demographic based webtoon, shows its own mechanism ofmale sexualisation. The objective of this study is to identify and analyze how the mechanismof male sexualisation in Eggnoid carried out through visual-image construction ofmale protagonist characters and power dynamic between male and femaleprotagonist characters. This study uses a qualitative approach by using thesemiotic-analysis of Charles S. Peirce, emphasizes the semiotic analysis of signs, which divided into three areas; the icon, the index and the symbol. This study isalso supported by the APA's sexualisation theory, the Scott McCloud's comictheory, and the theory of power by Fred Luthans. The results show that Webtoon Eggnoid presents the mechanism of malesexualisation, from its beautifully face drawing, larger eyes and soft, the athleticbody shape of male protagonist, the bright skin coloring techniques with halo orflower backgrounds that give a dreamy effect. In other words, Eggnoid shows themale protagonist picture has been designed intentionally based on female beautystandards. Eggnoid shows the power dynamics between male and femaleprotagonists, starting from season one, two and three. The female protagonistshows a dominant role than the male protagonist initially, but in season three, themale protagonist is started to play a dominant role, by presenting his maturity ofthinking and taking initiatives when interacting with female protagonist. Althoughmale protagonist appears to be more dominant, Eggnoid points out that femaleprotagonist is still hold real power. It is reflected by the intention of maleprotagonists who behave to meet only the interests of female protagonist.
