Abstract

Women and men should have equal opportunities to communicate and express their sexualities. However, the reality shows that women’s body and sexuality are still bridled from disciplining rules. “Yuni” is a film that tells the story of a society that still holds a tight disciplining rule over female sexuality. This research aims to understand how sexuality resistance strategy and the logic of sexuality perspective are represented in the film “Yuni”. This research uses representation theory, feminist standpoint theory, Luce Irigaray’s resistance strategy, and elements of sexuality. This is a descriptive qualitative research, under critical paradigm, and uses John Fiske’s semiotics method to analyze data findings. The result of this research found that “Yuni” represented resistance strategies through creating female sexuality, creating female language, and intensifying female sexuality. Through these strategies this research discovers that “Yuni” represented female expression of sexuality as a form of resistance, naturalizing the depiction of the female body, female language as a form of resistance, and resistance to the construction virginity. The perspective dominantly seen in “Yuni” is the female perspective, that appeared as the female director’s position towards the issues discussed in the film. However, this research also found that there is still a usage of the known dominant perspective in the effort of female sexuality resistance through the representation of a lesbian relationship that was formed because of trauma, heteronormative construction, and objectification of the female body.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore and interpret the significant challenges experienced by international students and the strategies used to cope with them in managing their anxiety and uncertainty in intercultural communication settings at Diponegoro University. A sample size of five students was purposively selected and participated in the data collection using in-depth and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed qualitatively using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Through their lived experiences, we realized that majority of participants were clueless about the Indonesian language and Indonesia/ Javanese culture in which some of them faced anxiety and uncertainty challenges in their arrival et during their initial interaction, and adaptation process challenges based chiefly on language anxiety and uncertainty; new culture and environment in communication and interaction with the inside and outside the campuses. They coped with their anxiety and uncertainty by accepting host culture’s lifestyle, friendships, learning the Indonesian language, attending prayers at Mosques, hanging out with friends, and self-learning. Additional learning materials such as dictionaries, google translate, watching the news, books, family assistance, and listening to music were added to overcome their linguistic anxiety and uncertainty. The motivation from lecturers, classmates, and local people to learn a new language was valuable.

Abstract

Single parents certainly experience difficulties in filling multiple roles, but being a single parent with a child with special needs presents challenges and complexities on a different level. Media has a role as a source of information as well as entertainment, to accurately display a social issue in society, so that individuals, groups or a culture are represented. This research describes the role of men as single parents in shaping the character of children with Asperger's syndrome in the Korean drama Move to Heaven by implementing John Fiske's semiotic theory through the level of reality, the level of representation and the level of ideology. The role of men as single parents in forming the character of children with Asperger syndrome shows inconsistencies in the discipline aspect. Then, in the affection aspect, the dominant role of men as single parents is shown, which ignores children's autonomy. Then, in the aspect of self-development, men as single parents show that children who understand their self-concept still need validation from other people. Finally, in the social aspect, it is not shown in depth the instillation of social values by men as single parents with children with Asperger's syndrome. The Korean drama Move to Heaven tends to romanticize the role of men as single parents with children with Asperger's syndrome by presenting dramatic elements that support the conception of hegemonie masculinity in society

Abstract

Abstract

The wives of TNI-Polri members are inseparable from their husband's institutions. For married TNI-Polri members, their wives play an important role in the smooth progression of their careers. Therefore, every wife who automatically joins the Bhayangkari and Persit organizations needs to adapt to the culture within these organizations. The research findings show that Bhayangkari members can learn the organizational culture earlier through the initial socialization they receive, while Persit members tend to learn over time through organizational activities. Spouses are the primary source of information for each informant about the organizational culture. Bhayangkari and Persit are collectivist organizations, although they share similarities in hierarchical structure with TNI-Polri institutions. Relationships among Bhayangkari members tend to be more complex, with more conflicts involving senior-junior power relations. Hierarchical communication is an essential aspect that wives need to understand to adapt effectively. Communication adaptation tends to be done through convergence by adopting the language style present in the organizational environment, adjusting gestures to match the interlocutor, and regulating the length of conversations in interactions.

Abstract

Abstract

Women's anger expressions are often debated and tend to be rejected as irrational. On the other hand, the expression of anger of women who are victims of bullying is highlighted as an interesting aspect of the Korean drama The Glory, which is expressed through acts of revenge against the perpetrators who bullied them. The Glory was liked and watched by many viewers and also received various comments regarding the expression of anger of women who were victims of bullying and acts of bullying on social media. This research aims to describe the audience's interpretation of women's anger in the Korean drama The Glory. This research uses active audience theory, audience reception theory, and the semiotic analysis method by John Fiske to see the dominant meaning or preferred reading as well as the reception analysis method by Stuart Hall to determine the informant's position of meaning. The results of this research show that the five male and female informants, with different backgrounds and experiences, show a tendency for informants to be in a negotiated position regarding the dominant meaning displayed in the text. Two informants who had been victims of bullying were in a dominant position in interpreting expressions of anger in the Korean drama The Glory. On the other hand, three informants, namely one informant who had contact with the victim of bullying, were in a negotiating position and two informants who were not or had never been victims of bullying were in a negotiating position. Thus, the findings of this study found that there was a disclosure of women's power regarding women's expressions of anger. This research also shows that there is a film strategy by showing women's expressions of anger as victims of bullying that can be accepted by the audience, namely by taking revenge in a strategic and tactical way based on the crimes committed by the perpetrators of the bullying.

Abstract

The research was motivated by the culture shock experienced by Indonesian students studying in Taiwan, related to differences in the education system between Taiwan and Indonesia. The selection of Taiwan for research was motivated by the high interest of Indonesian students to continue their education in Taiwan. The research focuses on the education system, including the teaching and learning process in class, group and individual assignments and exams, as well as internships and final projects. The purpose of this research is to understand the communication experiences of Indonesian students in overcoming culture shock in the education system in Taiwan. The research was conducted with an interpretive phenomenological approach and descriptive qualitative research method. The research used Self-Adjustment Theory and Identity Negotiation Theory. The data collection technique was carried out by literature study and in-depth interviews with six students from Indonesia class of 2020, who studied higher education at the undergraduate level in Taiwan. The results found that students need to take the initiative in initiating communication in learning activities and daily life, for example to get acquainted, ask questions, discuss, and get closer, this is because the communication culture in Taiwan tends to be individualistic. Students need to master the use of traditional Mandarin to support the communication process to overcome culture shock, as the main language used by Taiwanese people. Indonesian students need to approach themselves to live in groups in order to communicate and exchange ideas, especially with fellow Indonesian students, but Indonesian students can also avoid communication, in order to take a break from the pressure of educational culture shock, before finally returning to a condition that is ready to communicate.
