Abstract

The stem of the snakewood plant (Strychnos lucida) has been used empirically as a malaria drug, relieves fever, treats stomach pain, hemorrhoids, rheumatism, stroke symptoms, and improves blood circulation. Tannins as one of the secondary metabolites of snakewood stems contain gallic acid compounds which are known to thin the blood. The purpose of this study was to determine the anticoagulant activity of the ethanolic extract of snakewood stems on blood group samples, namely A, B, AB, and O. The method used for extraction was maceration, for testing anticoagulants used method modified Lee-White and blood smears, as well as for data analysis carried out descriptively. The results obtained by the Lee-White modification method on blood group samples were visually not clotting. For anticoagulant activity by blood smear method, it was shown that microscopically snakewood bark extract prevented the presence of blood clots which could be observed with unrelated blood cells, intact and separated from each other.Key words: S. lucida; Lee-White modification; blood smear; anticoagulants

Abstract

The aims of the study are to evaluate bioactive compounds, antibacterial and cytotoxic potential of D. lasianthera. This orchid grows well all over New Guinea Island as an ornamental plant because of their beautiful flowers. Orchids also known rich of its phytochemical compounds which already used as a traditional medicine in many countries around the world. However, research in pharmacological fields is still limited. In this study, leaves and stem of D. lasianthera were powdered and extracted with ethanol followed by fractionated using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol solvent. Extract as well as fraction were tested for phytochemical screening and determined antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus using Disc Diffusion Method. Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) was used to observe cytotoxic potential of leaves and stem extract and fraction at 10, 50, 100, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 ppm. The results showed that the leaves and stem extract contained tannin and alkaloids, separately. The ethanol extract of D. lasianthera showed 7.35 mm (leaves) and 7.43 mm (stem) inhibition zone against S. aureus Furthermore, the maximum inhibition zone of ethanol fraction of leaves and n-hexane fraction of stem were 8.42 mm and 8.10 mm separately. The LC50 of stem extract and fractions in these study were 699.3 ppm (ethanol extract), 602.1 ppm (ethyl acetate), 329.6 ppm (n-hexane fraction) and 676 ppm (ethanol fraction), whereas for leaves, only ethyl acetate fraction has toxict activity with an average LC50 833.2 ppm. Key words: D. lasianthera; phytochemical screening; antibacterial; cytotoxicity; Papua.

Abstract

Matoa (Pometia pinnata) is parts of Sapindaceae family widely spread in tropical areas, especially in Papua. Several studies mentioned the use of its parts as antioxidants and contain phenolic compounds and flavonoids. This study aim(s) to conduct a phytochemical screening test as well as a cytotoxic test for Pometia pinnata leaves fraction using the BSLT method. The research series began with the extraction process using 96% ethanol, then fractionated using three solvent variations: n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. Further, the phytochemical screening test was carried out for cytotoxic testing in order to see the mortality rate of shrimp larvae Artemia salina Leach. The result of the phytochemical showed that the secondary metabolite compounds on the ethanol and ethyl acetate fraction were alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenoids compounds meanwhile the n-hexane fraction contained terpenoids. The results of cytotoxic testing BSLT showed the LC50 value in the n-hexane was 7029.10 ppm, 406.07 ppm for ethyl acetate and 614.47 ppm for ethanol. Thus, it could be said that ethyl acetate and ethanol fractions were classified as a toxic category, while n-hexane was classified as a non-toxic category.Key words: matoa; fraction; phytochemical screening; cytotoxic.

Abstract

Akway bark (Drymis piperita) from Papua is widely used by local people in Arfak Mountains of West Papua to increase stamina. The purpose of this study was to determine the physical quality and tonic effects of Akway bark (bark tonic drink D. piperita) on mice (Mus musculus). The swimming resistance used to determine the tonic effect of mice (24 individuals) which divided into 6 groups. Group I was given water, group II tonic drink base, group III as positive control of 50 mg caffeine energy drinks, groups IV, V, and VI were given bark tonic drink 10mg /kg body weight, 30 mg/kg body weight, and 50mg /kg body weight respectively. The total period swimming until fatigue was measured and used as an index of swimming capacity. The results of  physical quality of the Akway bark tonic drink has a sweet and sour taste, with clear dark brown color, had distinctive aroma with pH of 4, and its volume was 100 ml with solubility deposits on day 21. The results of pre-clinical testing shown the highest dose was 50 mg/ weight swimming time 9.28 minutes and having better stamina. The next was with dose of 30 mg/kgBW, swimming for for 6.01 minutes and the last was dose of 10 mg /kgBW swimming for 3.23 minutes. The results of the one-way ANOVA test showed that it was significantly different between the 10 mg/kgBW, 30 mg/kgBW and 50 mg/kgBW groups. Key words: drink; D. piperita tonic; effect; mice; Papua.

Abstract

Evaluation of drug use is a quality assurance process that is carried out continuously, organizational structured and recognized to ensure that the drug is used appropriately and effectively. Until recently, Jayapura city is still as a malarial endemic area. In 2012, the number of malaria cases are malarial tertiana 8.535 (39%) cases, malarial tropical 12.256 (57%), malarial mix (tertiana+tropical) 612 (2,84%) and malarial quartana 73 (0,33%). The highest percentage of malarial cases in the Jayapura city is caused by Plasmodium falciparum. The aims of this study are to evaluate the drug use and the dose accuracy of antimalarial drugs in the General Hospital of Abepura from July to December 2014. This is a descriptive study conducted by a retrospective review of medical records of patients. The results of the study concluded that the highest incidence rates occurred in the male (59.04%) and lowest in women (40.96%), 15-25 years of age (57.8%), 26-35 years of age (27.7%) and  36-45 years of age (14.5%). The dose accuracy for antimalarial drugs (100%) indicated that antimalarial drugs used are Primaquine, Artesunate injection and Dihydroartemisin + piperaquine (DHP) or Darplex. Key words: Abepura hospital, antimalarial drug, Jayapura, malaria
