Abstract

The integration of surface water and groundwater is essential for sustainable water resources management, as both components are hydrologically interconnected through runoff, interflow, and baseflow processes. Surface water and groundwater are inseparable components of the hydrological system, contributing significantly to streamflow and to the calculation of water availability in watersheds. A previous study proposed a simpler, improved equation based on a rational method to estimate potential discharge for fully delineated watersheds within a single groundwater basin. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze potential discharge by applying an equation from previous reports with the addition of a beta (β) parameter to enhance performance. The modified rational equation was compared with three existing methods, namely FJ Mock, Sacramento, and NRECA, across six selected watersheds, including Cidanau, Kupang, Kuto, Sampean, Belawan, and Kumai. The results showed that the modified rational equation achieved the highest correlation coefficient and very good RSR classification, except for Kuto and Belawan. This showed that incorporating the β parameter as a baseflow correction factor in the Modified Rational Equation enhanced model accuracy, as indicated by higher correlation and lower RSR values. Optimal β values showed a strong relationship with watersheds-to-groundwater basin area ratio (AWS/AGWB), determined through an iterative process. The modified rational equation performed optimally in small watersheds (<250 km²), with correlation values >60% in catchments like Cidanau, Kupang, and Kuto. However, the accuracy decreased in larger areas, suggesting suitability for small-scale hydrological systems. The enhancement of the modified rational equation using the β parameter showed an alternative method for determining water availability and potential to improve the development of strategic frameworks of water resource management in Indonesia.

Abstract

The Babakan Watershed is located in Brebes Regency, Central Java Province, and represents one of the river systems that experiences recurrent flooding events annually. These events indicate a high vulnerability of the area to changes in hydrological characteristics driven by land use dynamics. This study aims to evaluate the effects of land use change on the hydrological and hydraulic responses of the Babakan Watershed and their implications for flood potential and characteristics. The methodology applies the Soil Conservation Service–Curve Number (SCS–CN) Synthetic Unit Hydrograph approach based on land use data from 2015 and 2022, with the application of a 20-year return period design discharge calibrated against bankfull water level conditions of the Babakan River to ensure consistency with the actual channel capacity. The hydrological analysis results show that the 20-year return period peak discharge (Q20) in 2022, at 274.63 m³/s, is lower than that in 2015, which reached 285.57 m³/s, indicating a reduced flood response associated with land use changes. Integration with hydraulic modeling reveals a decrease in Curve Number (CN), an increase in the percentage of impervious areas reflecting improved watershed infiltration capacity, as well as reductions in flood inundation extent and flow velocity. These findings confirm that integrated hydrological–hydraulic approach is effective for evaluating the impacts of land use change on flood propagation and risk in the Babakan Watershed, while also supporting improved preparedness and watershed management planning for future flood events.

Abstract

Wai U Village has a problem with the limited capacity of the village's clean water supply system. This community service activity aims to retrofit the existing clean water supply system, which previously experienced technical problems, and to increase the capacity of the existing system. The implementation method consists of pre-site visit interviews, field surveys, geoelectric surveys to determine aquifer potential, and water quality laboratory tests for drinking water standards. The results of the geoelectric data analysis show that the potential aquifer was located at 30m below the surface. The water quality test results show that the groundwater quality generally meets the class-1 water quality standards for drinking water. Field survey activities were followed by the construction of groundwater wells, water towers, water reservoirs, pumps, and a series of pipes connecting the new water sources to the existing pipe distribution network of Wai U Village. The final result of this activity was the improvement of the clean water supply capacity in Wai U Village, which was able to connect houses that previously depended on water sources from dug wells. There are 69 houses in the Wai U Village. Before experiencing technical problems, the existing water supply system (Pamsimas) in Wai U Village was connected to 38 houses (55%). The construction of new water supply infrastructure was connected to the remaining 31 houses (45%); thus, this activity has succeeded in increasing clean water network connections by almost 100% in Wai U Village. However, several house connections require rehabilitation. This activity is expected to be one of the real contributions of universities to achieving water, food, and energy security in Wai U Village, which is categorized as a 3T region.

Abstract

This investigation involved micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMES) engaged in home furniture manufacturing services. The conventional method used by these craftsmen usually uses tools that are easily available around us, using a woven or plaited system. Commonly used materials include Manau, bamboo, ropes and nails. This work is also said to pose a risk, because rattan, if it has been scraped or thinned to make it flexible, can endanger the craftsman. However, there are complaints from craftsmen who say that nowadays not many people want to use furniture made from handicrafts or from natural materials. People who have used a lot of home furniture made from various materials such as plastic, glass and others. In making this craft, a heating system is also used to heat the Manau with fire so that it can be easily bent to form parts of the craft framework.
