Abstract

This study aims at developing a critical reading test for Indonesian EFL students. This (R & D) project is intended to assess students' progress and is supposed to offer accurate and trustworthy results. The subjects were twenty students from the English Language and Literature Department at Brawijaya University who took part in the try out stage. The test items' difficulty indices ranged from 0.26 to 0.89. The reliability coefficient for the KR-20 was determined to be 0.95, indicating that this multiple-choice critical reading comprehension test is valid and reliable. Despite of the fact that the Critical Reading test is declared valid and reliable, the students’ score taking the Critical Reading test during the try out is less satisfactory. This might be caused by limited number of students taking the try out or problems dealing with teaching and learning process of critical reading in the classroom causing students’ inability to do the test well. Future researchers are suggested to address this issue by either involving more participants during the try out to get the reasons underlying students lack of ability in doing critical reading test.

Abstract

This is a case study research in this paper reports on findings from the case study (syntactic and morphological) in an individual diagnosed with a genetic disorder, Down Syndrome (DS), that affect language development without getting the help of any official therapists. We perform pragmatic and phonological analyses alongside morphology and syntactic analyses on data collected from studying documents, observation, and interview results. The qualitative descriptive linguistic method is used in this study to provide a detailed description. The result shows some deficits performed by the DS caused by articulatory limitation, difficulty to follow some words in long statements, and difficulty to respond to the topic that he has not known before.

Abstract

As Covid-19 cases soared in Indonesia, various efforts have been made by the government to overcome the spike in cases. This study aimed to examine the model of compliance with the Covid-19 protocol for migrant Madurese through perceived risk of Covid-19, citizen trust, locus of control, and anti-vaccine attitudes. A total of 245 migrant Madurese community were recruited by purposive sampling. The results showed that the theoretical model of compliance with the Covid-19 protocol was built through Citizen Trust, Locus of Control, and Anti-Vaccine Attitudes, while risk perception as a moderating variable had no effect on the compliance with the Covid-19 protocol. The results also showed that risk perception did not have a significant effect on the compliance with the Covid-19 protocol, but risk perception was influenced by citizen trust and anti-vaccine attitudes. Citizen compliance and anti-vaccine attitudes only had a direct effect on compliance with the Covid-19 protocol without any mediating variables.

This study deals with a strategy named Group Discussion model of CooperativeLearning strategy applied in the teaching of Critical Reading course at English Study Program,Brawijaya University. By using that strategy, it is expected that the problem in CriticalReading class can be solved and students’ ability in critical reading will, in turn, be improved. The design of the study is Classroom Action Research (CAR) since the study is aimed atimproving the students’ critical reading ability and solving the classroom’s problems on theteaching of reading. Based on its characteristics, the classroom action research is donerepeatedly until those problems can be solved. Dealing with the classroom setting, the study isdirected to develop the teaching strategy in order to find out a solution to the classroom’sproblem in the teaching of reading. This study reveals that Cooperative Learning strategy hassuccessfully improved students’ critical reading ability. In doing so, there are stages conductednamely, having cooperative work organization, using appropriate media, having creativity (forteachers), monitoring teaching and learning processes closely, and giving students feedback ontheir work. In conclusion, Cooperative Learning can be beneficial for students’ learning incritical reading as it can make students active and enjoy the classroom activities. However, italso has weaknesses such as time consuming and less appropriate for classes with biggernumber of students. Despite the weaknesses, teachers are still recommended to apply thisstrategy in critical reading classes.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis paper examines an in-depth narrative case study that explores the emotional journeys of two EFL students participating in the Indonesian government's IISMA (Indonesian International Students Mobility Award) student exchange program. Direct interviews with students over one month provided the source of the study's data. The study's findings showed that the participant experienced sustainable adaptation through negotiated emotional changes in their experiences as exchange students in host countries, which were anchored by Hargreaves' (2001) dynamic geography framework that focuses on physical, social, moral, professional, and political aspects. Such a situated practice raises the question of what preliminary preparation IISMA students should undertake before travelling to the host nations and how policymakers should respond to students' emotions as feedback. This empirical data may also illuminate the function of emotion played by EFL students participating in international exchange programs while finishing their studies in Indonesia. How to Cite: Zidani, I.H., Sudarwati, E. (2023). Abstract

This study aims to investigate three issues namely (1) the types of  code switching practiced by Timorese, (2) the factors influencing their multilingualism, and (3)the reasons of Timorese to choose Portuguese over Bahasa Indonesia as the official language. The information was gathered through questionnaires and in-depth interviews, and it was evaluated using Holmes’s code-switching theories. The current study finds that the Timorese mostly used metaphorical code-switching. This happens due to a paucity of vocabulary in Tetum, which lead to lexical borrowing and the adoption of Portuguese words into Tetum and lead Timorese unwittingly flip metaphorical codes. Additionaly, the country’s many languages cause a metaphorical code-switching among the speakers. Furthermore, this study also reveals that multilingualism and the phenomenon of code-switching in Timor-Leste are influenced by colonization, geographical factor, television shows, social media and mix marriages. Lastly, Portuguese is chosen as the official language due to prolonged colonialization and occupation.
