Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study aims to shed new light on Javanese language maintenance through the practice of English-Javanese code-switching reflected in a song entitled Lathi by Weird Genius feat Sara Fajira. The intrinsic merit of the song 'Lathi,' covering cultural values, song lyrics significance, and the song's moral message, were deliberately discussed here. The data are taken from interview transcripts, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed by first classifying the Lathi song lyrics into types of code switching, investigating the youths’ perception regarding the used of Javanese English code switching in Lathi song, and analyze the aspects of the songs highlighted the idea of Javanese language maintenance. The findings of this study suggest that the phenomenon of code-switching in Lathi songs is deliberately done to keep maintaining Javanese's existence as one of the popular vernacular in Indonesia. Language maintenance of the Javanese language in a song named Lathi can pique the public's interest in learning Javanese by creating Javanese language maintenance represented in its song lyrics. It makes the Javanese language gain popularity in the community, particularly among students and young people. It is, of course, a good sign of minimizing the threat of language shift. The continuous use of the local language as a language maintenance effort will avoid losing the community's first language

Abstract

There are numerous studies of linguistics landscape or study of texts in public spaces. However, study on the culinary sign is still rare in Indonesia. Thus, this paper explores the linguistics landscape of culinary signs around campus in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, the melting pot of cultures and languages. The research aims to analyze the form of language use and its function. The data collection is photographing culinary signs around three advanced campuses in Malang, namely the University of Brawijaya, State University of Malang, and the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Qualitative descriptive was used in analyzing the data. The results showed that Indonesian, English, and Javanese are the most frequent languages used in culinary banners or storefronts and other foreign languages (Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Malay) and vernaculars (Sundanese, Banjarese, Minangnese). It was found that the Malang culinary linguistics mirrored the taste and service of the store. Furthermore, foreign languages are becoming a way to go global and known by college students who most like modernization. The use of Javanese also acts as a symbol of maintaining the cultural heritage of Javanese people.

Abstract

A preliminary study has found that Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) grantees faced a variety of challenges during their IISMA program at the destination universities. Therefore, this study aims to develop and implement a global literacy (GL) framework to help IISMA students improve their GL competence to survive during their stay in host universities. Ten IISMA awardees studying at one of the state universities in Malang, Indonesia, participated in this study. A qualitative mixed-method design was applied. The data were collected through FGDs, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews. Using a descriptive qualitative analysis, this study proposes a practical framework to aid IISMA students in improving their global literacy competence. The findings were in the form of an instructional framework that can be maximally applied by those who need to prepare students for the IISMA program. It is envisaged that this study can aid in developing GL competencies, enabling subsequent students to fulfill their responsibilities as change agents from a global viewpoint. The framework created in this study provides pedagogical implications for re-creating a subject-specific curriculum that incorporates student practice in GL. The study

Abstract

This study examines the role of conversational implicatures and maxim violations in manipulative communication, particularly in the phenomenon of breadcrumbing. Breadcrumbing is a subtle manipulation tactic in romantic relationships characterized by ambiguous messages to maintain someone's interest without commitment. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, data were collected through an open-ended online questionnaire aimed at individuals who had experienced breadcrumbing. By applying Grice's implicature theory, this study identifies how maxim violations (quantity, quality, relation, and manner) contribute to creating ambiguity and false hope in breadcrumbing. These deliberate violations aim to maintain an emotional connection while avoiding clear intentions in the relationship, thereby preserving ambiguity within it. The findings reveal that perpetrators of breadcrumbing often use vague and unclear language as a communication manipulation strategy that creates emotional uncertainty in the victim. This study also highlights the psychological impact of breadcrumbing on victims, such as emotional uncertainty and decreased self-esteem. The work emphasizes the value of pragmatic linguistic analysis in uncovering subtle forms of emotional manipulation in romantic relationships and suggests potential strategies for awareness and prevention.

Abstract

This study examined the language of Indonesian beauty branding, focusing on how language choices constructed brand identity and appealed to specific social groups. The research analyzed 79 data points, including brand names, slogans, taglines, and campaigns, which were collected from homepage banners and company profiles of seven beauty brand websites, using the Linguistic Landscape (LL) and Virtual Linguistic Landscape (VLL) frameworks. The sample included both local and international labels. A qualitative descriptive method with purposive sampling was applied, and the data were categorized by language form (monolingual or bilingual) and linguistic function (informative and symbolic). The findings showed a strong preference for English in conveying prestige, modernity, and global orientation. Bahasa Indonesia was employed to emphasize national pride and ensure accessibility, while occasional Arabic or Spanish terms targeted niche audiences. The dominance of symbolic over informative functions reflected strategic branding aimed at influencing consumer perceptions and appealing to defined social groups. This research contributed to the advancement of LL and VLL scholarships by extending their application to the under-explored domain of beauty branding in Indonesia. It demonstrated how multilingual branding operated simultaneously as a marketing tool and a vehicle for ideological expression, offering a framework for understanding how language choices in emerging markets reflected and reinforced socio-cultural values.

Abstract

This study explores the emotional geography of a peer supporter who assists students with disabilities at Brawijaya University. Data were obtained from a participant at the Disability Service Center (PSLD) with the informed consent of the individual involved. The data were collected over three months through in-depth interviews. The analysis draws upon Hargreaves’ (2001) framework of five emotional geographies—moral, sociocultural, physical, professional, and political. The study aims to analyze the emotional relationships that emerge during the peer support program organized by PSLD UB in assisting students with disabilities (SWD) as they navigate university life. The findings reveal how a peer supporter contributes to the academic and moral well-being of SWD, not only by providing physical support but also through emotional engagement. Furthermore, the study uncovers how the peer supporter responds to various situations with empathy, resilience, initiative, and responsiveness. These findings highlight the importance of fostering both personal and professional growth among peer supporters to strengthen inclusive practices within higher education environments.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the influence of language use on identity and belonging in a Third Culture Kid (TCK) and a long-term immigrant adolescent. Although numerous research investigates language and identity independently, few directly compare these two domains. This research aims to investigate how adolescents from multicultural backgrounds utilize language in familial, social, and educational settings, and how these linguistic patterns affect their sense of belonging. Data were acquired using semi-structured interviews and processed using thematic analysis within a qualitative framework. Research indicates that Indonesian functions as the emotional and intimate language among families, whereas English is preferred in peer interactions, schooling, and everyday activities. Cultural ties are mostly sustained through cuisine, behaviors, and deliberate language selection. The TCK portrays feelings more authentically in Indonesian and cultivates a hybrid identity, while the long-term immigrant utilizes English for emotional expression and experiences a deeper connection to the host culture due to linguistic predominance. In conclusion, language serves a dynamic and context dependent function in influencing how adolescents navigate their identities across cultures.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how, in the digital setting of online dating, Tinder users create their personal brands and self-representations using linguistic and multimodal strategies. This study examines how language functions as a tool for the performance of identity, social position, and symbolic capital in digital spaces. This is based on Goffman's (1959) Theory of Self-Presentation, which serves as a broad theory. This is further supported by Personal Brand Theory and Bourdieu's concepts of Cultural and Linguistic Capital. The study uses a qualitative approach with Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 2013) and includes semi-structured interviews with 15 participants aged 20 to 35, as well as textual and discourse analysis of Tinder bios and chat excerpts. The three-dimensional CDA framework developed by Fairclough is used in the analysis to examine sociocultural context, discursive practices, and textual features. The study found that Tinder users frequently employ concise, lighthearted, and casual language patterns as a tactic for self-image and attraction. While multimodal elements such as emojis, capitalization, and punctuation styles serve as visual extensions of self-expression, their educational and sociocultural backgrounds influence their linguistic creativity and tone. These linguistic performances demonstrate the negotiation of identity and symbolic hierarchies influenced by digital norms and culture. According to the study's findings, Tinder bios serve as performative platforms where users strategically employ language and multimodality to achieve a balance between cultural identity, attraction, and authenticity.

Abstract

This narrative inquiry is based on the lived experiences of parents who have a speech delayed child. A child with a language delay must go through in order to appropriately have strong competence in the language learning process. The data were derived from parents’ stories, a speech therapy progress book, medical records, and video recordings of classroom activities. Findings were focused on the thorough process a research subject has undergone to finally survive in catching up his lag of language development compared to the mainstream children of his age. After four years of intensive labor requiring parental involvement and three years of programmed therapy, the research subject achieves improvement milestones that enable him to catch up to conventional children's language development, which he should have completed. More research into the deployment of other linguistic aspects is needed to provide a clear picture of the development of his language learning.

Abstract

This study aims at developing a critical reading test for Indonesian EFL students. This (R & D) project is intended to assess students' progress and is supposed to offer accurate and trustworthy results. The subjects were twenty students from the English Language and Literature Department at Brawijaya University who took part in the try out stage. The test items' difficulty indices ranged from 0.26 to 0.89. The reliability coefficient for the KR-20 was determined to be 0.95, indicating that this multiple-choice critical reading comprehension test is valid and reliable. Despite of the fact that the Critical Reading test is declared valid and reliable, the students’ score taking the Critical Reading test during the try out is less satisfactory. This might be caused by limited number of students taking the try out or problems dealing with teaching and learning process of critical reading in the classroom causing students’ inability to do the test well. Future researchers are suggested to address this issue by either involving more participants during the try out to get the reasons underlying students lack of ability in doing critical reading test.
