Abstract

This study examines the use of euphemisms in tweets posted by international football clubs in response to the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy. Guided by Allan and Burridge's (2012) theory, fifteen tweets were analyzed and classified based on the types of euphemisms employed. The research identifies various euphemisms, including hyperboles, distortions, and metaphors, used to soften the impact of tragic events and convey condolences. Through a thorough analysis, the study explores the purposes of euphemisms in online communication and their effectiveness in conveying emotions while maintaining a respectful tone. The research also considers the influence of social media platforms on language variation and expression, highlighting Twitter's role as a platform for emotional expression. Furthermore, the study provides insights into communication dynamics in online spaces. It suggests avenues for future research to explore euphemism topics using alternative theoretical frameworks and sources beyond social media platforms. Overall, this research contributes to understanding how euphemistic language is utilized in digital discourse and its implications for online communication strategies.

Abstract

Osob Walikan, commonly referred to as Walikan Malang, can be widely used in the social life of Malang people. Developed from a code language, this language still exists even though it already served its purpose and developed into a Malang local language. This paper investigates the current perception of Malangese toward Walikan and its relationship with the maintenance of the Walikan language, which is a local code street language that has shifted to become an urban language. This qualitative study uses questionnaires and interviews to gather the data. The findings showed that there are 3 main perceptions of Malangese towards Walikan: a language as an identity, cultural heritage, and symbol of solidarity. The majority of participants agreed that Walikan is important and needs to be preserved because Walikan has its values for the Malang people. The main method of preservation is to use this language actively in communication so that there are always active speakers to prevent the decline of language use.

Abstract

Implicit compliments were one of the speech acts forms, often found in high-context cultures such as Indonesia, in which implicitly attributed credit to someone other than the speaker, conveying admiration indirectly.  The study aimed to provide a new perspective that not only contributed to the existing literature on cross-cultural pragmatics and translation studies, but also addressed the possible challenges posed by implicit compliments in movie translation in terms of Indonesian cultural context. The data for this study were collected by watching the movie “Bumi Manusia” on Netflix, observing both the original Indonesian dialogue and the English subtitles. Through the analysis, the study identified two main types of implicit compliments, those referring to achievements and those involving comparisons based on Boyle's (2000) framework. From the 28 data collected, the findings indicated that translators employed several translation procedures proposed by Newmark (1988), such as modulation, transposition, transference, and cultural equivalence to convey the meaning of implicit compliments. Furthermore, this study also highlighted the inherent challenges associated with the translation of implicit compliments, particularly in terms of cultural and linguistic aspects, including symbolic cultural meaning, language structure, and culturally specific terms.

Abstract

Pengabdian ini bertujuan meningkatkan kualitas jus terong belanda di Desa Ngadas melalui pengembangan teknologi pengemasan semi-otomatis dan penerapan praktik kebersihan terpadu. Pendekatan ini dirancang guna mengatasi kebocoran kemasan, memperpanjang masa simpan, serta memenuhi kebutuhan pasar pariwisata setempat. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi observasi awal, pelatihan penggunaan alat penyegel semi-otomatis, dan penerapan prosedur kebersihan berbasis Good Manufacturing Practices.

Abstract

This study investigates the slang terminologies use, especially 'slay', in the Western and Indonesian TikTok spheres in relation to socio-pragmatic analysis. The objective of the study is to focus on the pathways in which English words undergo changes with the passage of time and how English slang words and phrases are interpreted in the context of contemporary language, the evolution of slang terms such as 'slay' and its differing meanings between Western and Indonesian TikTok users. The study is based on socio-pragmatic theory and semantic change theory to examine how slang is used in contemporary discourse in relation to time and space, multicultural contexts, and adaptation. A qualitative approach, with particular emphasis on content analysis, is employed to identify these aspects. The TikTok creators' posts were the source of the comments and captions used for data collection. The methodology for data analysis applied to TikTok data was systematic including the identification of slang words and explaining them. TikTok users from the West and Indonesia diverge sharply in their understanding of ‘slay’. In Western TikTok, ‘slay’ is a compliment and a form of admiration, whereas in Indonesian TikTok, ‘slay’ is mostly used derisively to mock guys for being feminized and for being gay. This study showcases the extent to which English slang words can create a misunderstanding and misused across the world and with different languages.

Abstract

This study explores the differences and similarities in language comprehension and expressive abilities among children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). While the two disorders impact speech and language, their causes are rather different; CP results from motor impairment, while DLD results from impaired language processing. Through the use of a qualitative case study, two children, one with CP and the other with DLD, are used to examine their communication strategies, speech production, and language output. Data were collected through video observation of fluency, articulation, syntax, and coherence. The study indicates that a child with CP shows primarily expressive language impairment due to motor constraints, with well-maintained grammar and strong receptive capabilities despite slurred and late speech. Conversely, a child with DLD speech is fluent but disorganized, with pervasive grammatical errors and lexical difficulties, suggesting linguistic planning instead of motor impairments. Therapies, therefore, differ: CP therapy focuses on motor-based strategies like articulation and regulation of breathing, while DLD therapy targets the facilitation of grammar, vocabulary, and sentence formation by language-based activities like role play and storytelling. The study emphasizes the importance of tailored intervention, noting that therapy must be tailored to each child's unique language profile. It also emphasizes the relationship between language and Theory of Mind (ToM), suggesting that therapy for both conditions includes scope for the expression of thoughts and feelings. These findings shape a better view of speech-language disorders, improving diagnostic methods and treatment interventions for children with CP and DLD.
