Abstract

Pentingnya bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa internasional sangat dibutuhkan untuk menunjang pekerjaan dan berkomunikasi sebagai perawat, mengingat pasien datang dari berbagai latarbelakang termasuk berbicara berbagai bahasa. Berdasarkan kondisi yakni kurang lebih terdapat lima pasien asing yang berobat di rumah sakit Lavallete setiap minggunya, beberapa perawatmengalami kendala berkomunikasi sehingga tidak dapat menangani pasien dengan cepat dantepat dan perawat yang mampu berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris terbatas tiga orang danperawat tersebut tidak setiap saat mendapatkan giliran jaga sehingga perlu dicarikan solusi yaituberupa pelatihan percakapan bahasa Inggris khususnya bahasa Inggris untuk tujuan khusus.Dengan materi greeting for nurses, useful expression for admission, nursing instruction, givingprocedures dan handling patient complaints melalui teknik yang bervariasi mulai daribrainstorming, modeling, drilling, role play, maupun mini lesson, pelatihan percakapan bahasaInggris diadakan untuk perawat di RS Lavalette.Kata Kunci: percakapan bahasa Inggris, perawat, bahasa Inggris untuk tujuan khusus

Abstract

Artikel ini membahas tentang kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang dilaksanakan di Sekolah Alam Ngelmu Pring Kota Batu. Kegiatan tersebut berupa program pelatihan pengajaran EYL (Bahasa Inggris bagi Pembelajar Muda). Melalui program pelatihan ini, para pengajar di sekolah alam tersebut diharapkan bisa mengembangkan dan menerapkan materi atau bahan ajar yang sesuai untuk kelompok usia pembelajar muda, menggunakan teknik yang baik dalam proses pembelajaran, menerapkan aktifitas yang tepat, serta mengembangkan media ajar yang tepat yang dapat mendukung pelaksanaan pengajaran EYL di sekolah tersebut. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan bahwa peserta cukup antusias menjalani masa pelatihan dan menunjukkan semangat yang baik dalam belajar. Peserta telah dinilai mampu mendalami proses pengajaran yang baik dari segi teknik, materi dan penggunaan media. Tidak ada hambatan yang berarti mengingat peserta sudah memiliki latar belakang pengajaran bahasa Inggris di bangku perkuliahan. Pelatihan inidiharapkan dapat menjadi titik perubahan ke arah yang lebih baik bagi proses pengajaran di sekolah alam Ngelmu Pring. Abstract

Language deficiency is one of the barriers that autistic children face in their language growth. Autistic children may face these difficulties in which they have trouble in understanding and communicating their language. Using Chaer's Language Disorders Theory (2003), this research attempts to investigate the receptive language disorders performed by an autistic child named Rahesa and the expressive language disorders performed by an autistic child named Rahesa based on Suherman’s (2016) theory. Using a qualitative with descriptive approach, the data were taken from the videos of the subject’s relationship with his mother, then transcribed into dialogs and analyzed. Then, researcher continued to describe all the findings. The findings of this research indicate that an autistic person has trouble interpreting the message of others and communicating his/her emotions by verbal words. An autistic boy has three difficulties with receptive language disorder, such as difficulty in interpreting verbal language, difficulty in following verbal guidance, and difficulty in focusing his mind.As far as expressive language disorder is concerned, an autistic person faces six difficulties, such as difficulty in inserting words into sentences, difficulty in choosing the correct expression, poor comprehension, taking words out of sentences, repeating some words or phrases, and inappropriately using language structure.The present thesis seeks to offer insights to prospective scholars who are interested in linguistic, in particular psycholinguistics concerned with language problems in the case of autism. General readers will enrich their understanding of and how to cope with the forms of language problems in autistic children.

Abstract

This study examines how emotional language functions as an affective strategy in self-improvement book blurbs and how it triggers reader engagement from a psycholinguistic perspective. Self-improvement books constitute a rapidly expanding genre, making their promotional blurbs a significant site for linguistic analysis. Blurbs function as affective instruments that mediate reader perception and engagement, yet the emotional language mechanisms operating within them remain undertheorised. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytic approach, the study integrates three complementary frameworks: Appraisal Theory (Martin & White, 2005), Halliday's Interpersonal Metafunction (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014), and the Affect Infusion Model (Forgas, 1995). Six blurbs from Brianna Wiest's bestselling self-improvement books (2016–2025) were selected for genre consistency, publication range, and international recognition. The analysis reveals that emotional language is systematically constructed across three appraisal systems, namely Attitude, Engagement, and Graduation, forming a coherent affective architecture. These resources are strategically deployed through interpersonal choices of mood, pronoun, and modality to construct an affective writer-reader relationship. Emotional language appears to facilitate reader engagement through affective and evaluative processes, operating as a cognitive heuristic that shapes readers' decisions to engage with the text. This study contributes to discourse analysis by demonstrating how emotional language in self-improvement blurbs strategically constructs affective relationships that drive readers engagement.
