Abstract

Body type (somatotype) with metabolic syndrome among non-obese woman aged 25-40 years oldBackground: The prevalence of central obesity was found high in women, not only in obese individuals but also occur in non-obese individuals or metabolically obese normal weight (MONW). Endomorph marked by higher fat mass, which will lead to metabolic disorders. Objective: This study aimed to describe the correlation of somatotype with metabolic syndrome in a non-obese woman.Methods: Cross-sectional observational study, subjects were selected using purposive sampling involving 46 women 25-40 years old with BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 in several offices in the City of Semarang, consist of Balai Besar Teknologi Pencegahan dan Pencemaran Industri, Dinas Pekerjaan Umum, and Dinas Perindustrian dan Perdagangan Central Java. Somatotype data is measured in three components, namely endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph. The resulting value of each component is calculated using the Heath-Carter formula. Triglycerides, HDL, and fasting blood glucose measured by enzymatic colorimetric methods. Blood pressure measured by aneroid sphygmomanometer. Syndrome metabolic was defined as metabolic syndrome risk score (cMetS). Data were analyzed by Rank Spearman and Pearson. Results: The subject's body type is endomorph as much as 91.3% and ectomorph-endomorph (8.7%). Central obesity (50%), low HDL levels (28%), hypertriglyceridemia (2%), normal GDP levels (100%), hypertension (15%), metabolic syndrome (13%), and metabolic pre-syndromes (47, 8%) found in the subject of this study. There were correlation between endomorph (p=0.005; r=0.4) and ectomorph (p=0.000; r=-0.53) with waist circumference. There was a significant correlation between endomorph with metabolic syndrome risk score (p=0.05; r=0.129).Conclusions: Endomorph was associated with a metabolic syndrome risk score. Higher endomorph tends to have higher metabolic syndrome risk scores.

Abstract

The increased visceral adiposity index associated with metabolic syndrome in obese adolescentsBackground: Metabolic syndrome is a complex risk factor of cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus type II. Metabolic syndrome scores are calculated to describe the severity of the risk of metabolic syndrome. Adipose tissue is an independent risk factor for metabolic changes related to metabolic syndrome. One indicator to calculate the distribution and fat function is through the calculation of the visceral adiposity index (VAI).Objective: Analyzing the correlation of VAI with metabolic syndrome score in adolescents in the City of Semarang. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 95 obese adolescents in Semarang City aged 12-17 years who were selected by consecutive sampling method. The inclusion criteria were students aged 12-17 years; subjects were obese based on BMI for age (BMI/U > 95th percentile CDC 2000 curves); not in chronic pain or the care of a doctor; and not on a certain diet. Data collected were waist circumference (WC), blood pressure, fasting blood sugar levels, triglyceride levels, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. Metabolic syndrome scores are calculated using metabolic syndrome risk score (cMets). VAI is calculated to measure fat distribution and dysfunction. Correlation of VAI with metabolic syndrome and the component was analyzed with the Spearman test. Results: VAI score has a range of 1.8-14.9 with a greater mean in female subjects. The metabolic syndrome score has a range of -5.9 to 6.3 with a greater mean in male subjects. The Spearman correlation test showed a significant relationship between VAI and HDL levels (r=-0.427), triglyceride levels (r=0.914), and metabolic syndrome scores (r=0.439) in male, and HDL levels (r=-0.427), triglyceride levels (r=0.955), WC (r=0.346), and metabolic syndrome scores (r=0.691) in female. Conclusions: VAI has a significant relationship with the metabolic syndrome score which indicates the body's metabolic profile which is getting worse, so the body's metabolic profile can be described from the magnitude of VAI.

Abstract

Effect of diets with glycemic load arrangement on blood glucose levels in young soccer athletes Background: Carbohydrate arrangement considering the glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (BG) are important to support the performance of athletes. Objective: To examine the effect of diets with glycemic load arrangement on blood glucose levels in young soccer athletes. Methods: Quasi-experimental study on 14 male young soccer players aged 15-18 years old at Terang Bangsa Soccer School. Each subject completed 4 trials separated by at least 7 days as a washout period. Diets provided consist of high GI with high GL diet (H-H), low GI with high GL diet (L-H), high GI with low GL (H-L), and low GI with low GL diet (L-L). Collected data were fasting blood glucose level (BGL 0), blood glucose level one hour after intervention (BGL 1), blood glucose level two hours after intervention (BGL 2), and blood glucose level after exercise (BGL 3).Results: The results of paired t-test analysis showed that there were differences between fasting blood glucose level and blood glucose level one hour after intervention, blood glucose level one hour after intervention and blood glucose level two hours after intervention, blood glucose level two hours after intervention and blood glucose level after exercise in the H-H and L-H diet group. In the L-L diet group, there were differences between BGL 2 and BGL 3. One-Way ANOVA analysis showed that there were no significant differences in blood glucose levels one hour after the intervention, blood glucose level two hours after intervention, and blood glucose level after exercise between groups. Conclusions: High glycemic load diets influence the increase in blood glucose levels at 1 hour postprandial and after exercise. Low glycemic load diets influence the increase in blood glucose levels after exercise. Diets with the arrangement of glycemic index and glycemic load did not affect blood glucose levels between diet groups.

Abstract

Excessive physical exercise can stimulate proinflammatory cytokines expressions and increases high sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-CRP). Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) and vitamins A, C, and E are antioxidant mechanisms to reduce oxidative stress. This study analyzes the correlation between vitamin A, C, E, and BCAA intake with hs-CRP. The study design was cross-sectional, which was conducted in Semarang. Participants were 48 men aged 20-43 years. Sampling used consecutive sampling. Data were collected using food recall 3x24h to assess dietary intake and laboratory tests using the Immunoturbidimetric method to determine hs-CRP levels. Data were statistically analyzed using Spearman-Rank and multiple linear regression. The result showed that the subject with high-risk categories of hs-CRP was 18,8%. The intake of BCAA was 10,8% from supplements. Most subjects had an excessive intake of vitamin A but did not meet the needs of vitamins C and E. There was no correlation between BCAA intake (p= 0,681) and vitamin C intake (p= 0,137) with hs-CRP levels. However, there was a negative correlation between vitamin A (p= 0,003) and vitamin E (p= 0,013) intake with hs-CRP levels. Multivariate analysis showed that the intake of vitamin A associated with hs-CRP levels of 8,1% (p= 0,028). In conclusion, vitamin A intake is the most influential factor in hs-CRP levels in fitness center members.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Healthy Baby Porridge is a term usually used for ready-to-eat complementary food products sold on the roadside. These products were great in demand and were chosen by consumers for cheap and practical reasons. However, the safety of these products was not recognized yet. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the total microbial value of Healthy Baby Porridges based on storage condition and to detect Escherichia coli and Salmonella bacteria. Methods: This study was quantitative descriptive research. The samples tested consisted of porridges and steamed rice. The total microbial value was assessed by using Total Plate Count (TPC), and the presences of Escherichia coli and Salmonella were identified. The TPC was performed for three conditions: (1) soon after samples were purchased at room temperature (26.5 - 27 °C), and after stored for six hours: (2) at room temperature, and (3) in the refrigerator (5°C). Escherichia coli and Salmonella was identified immediately after samples were purchased. Results: The TPC value soon after purchase ranged from 1.7 x 102 to 2.7 x 104. After six hours stored, it was between 1.4 x 103 to 1.9 x 107 at room temperature and between 4.8 x 102 to 1.3 x 106 in the refrigerator. The samples contained no Escherichia coli and Salmonella. Conclusion: The total microbial value of Healthy Baby Porridges had already exceeded the maximum limit of 1 x 102 soon after purchase and increased with storage time, especially at room temperature. Escherichia coli and Salmonella were not found. Consuming products with total microbial value above the threshold can potentially pose a health risk. Abstract

Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) is a major health risk for children under five. Various factors, such as poor food intake, infections, family size, healthcare participation, maternal nutrition knowledge, and parenting practices, contribute to SAM. However, no studies have specifically examined these factors in under-five children in Grobogan Regency. This study aims to analyze the risk factors associated with severe acute malnutrition among children under five years old in Grobogan Regency. The study employed a quantitative case-control design involving children aged 0-59 months in Grobogan Regency, with 11 children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) as the case group obtained through total sampling, and 11 well-nourished children as the control group selected via matching. Key variables examined included energy, protein, fat, and carbohydrate intake, as well as infectious diseases, family size, participation in posyandu, maternal nutrition knowledge, and parenting practices. Descriptive analysis outlined the subjects and variables, with bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test at a 95% confidence level (α=0.05). The results study show that the statistical analysis indicated that inadequate energy intake was significantly associated with SAM (p=0.008, OR=26.667), suggesting that children under five with insufficient energy intake are 26.667 times more likely to experience severe acute malnutrition compared to those with adequate energy intake. In contrast, adequate intake of protein, fat, and carbohydrates, as well as factors such as infectious diseases, family size (p=0.080), participation in posyandu (p=1.000), maternal nutrition knowledge (p=0.476), and parenting practices (p=0.198), did not demonstrate significant associations with SAM among these children. The conclusion is adequate energy intake has been identified as a significant risk factor for SAM among under-five children in Grobogan Regency. Conversely, factors such as adequate intake of protein, fat, and carbohydrates, infectious diseases, family size, participation in posyandu, maternal nutrition knowledge, and parenting practices were not recognized as significant risk factors.
