Abstract

This study aims to examine the meaning of body gestures in the depiction of Arjuna within the Kamasan Wayang paintings using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The Kamasan Wayang painting, a traditional Balinese art form, is rich in philosophical and symbolic meanings reflecting moral, heroic, and spiritual values of Balinese society. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with semiotic analysis focusing on Barthes’ two levels of meaning: denotation and connotation. The findings reveal that Arjuna’s gestures in Kamasan paintings convey not only aesthetic beauty but also profound moral and social messages. The upright posture with folded hands symbolizes self-control, loyalty, and wisdom, while the eye direction represents harmony between strength and gentleness. Overall, Kamasan Wayang serves as a cultural text that embodies ethical and spiritual values in Balinese life. Thus, Barthesian semiotics effectively reveals the deeper meanings behind traditional visual symbols.

Abstract

This research analyzes how local Balinese media frame the narrative surrounding Bali Mandiri Energi following the 2025 blackout that paralyzed the island for more than ten hours. The study applies Robert Entman’s framing theory to examine how two major local news outlets, Radar Bali and Bali Post, constructed meaning and directed public attention toward the government’s energy independence agenda. Using a theoretic descriptive approach, the study identifies key framing devices such as problem definition, causal interpretation, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. Findings reveal that both media positioned the blackout not merely as a technical failure, but as a symbolic crisis that exposed Bali’s energy dependency on Java. The discourse of Bali Mandiri Energi was amplified through positive moral framing, portraying the initiative as a collective breakthrough rooted in regional pride and resilience. However, subtle differences appear: Radar Bali emphasized political accountability, while Bali Post foregrounded cultural and environmental narratives. The research concludes that local media framing played a strategic role in transforming a regional crisis into a narrative of innovation and self-reliance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of cyberbullying through the Instagram Story feature on the mental health of Generation Z students in Denpasar. The rapid advancement of technology and the increasing use of social media have significantly changed the patterns of communication and social interaction among young people. Instagram, as one of the most popular platforms among Gen Z, offers the Story feature that allows users to share daily activities quickly and openly. However, this convenience is often misused for negative actions such as ridicule, sarcasm, or the spread of harmful information. This research employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method by examining various relevant previous studies. The findings indicate that cyberbullying through Instagram Story can trigger psychological problems such as stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression. Moreover, social pressure to appear perfect on social media exacerbates students’ mental health conditions. Nevertheless, Instagram also has positive potential when used wisely as a medium for self-expression, information sharing, and strengthening social connections. Therefore, increasing digital literacy, promoting ethical social media behavior, and encouraging the active role of universities and the government are essential to create a healthy and safe digital environment for the younger generation

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of public relations in managing public information through the SMILE Puskesad application at Tk. II Udayana Hospital as part of efforts to enhance transparency and improve the quality of health services. Employing a qualitative method with a case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, documentation, and a review of relevant literature. The findings indicate that information management is carried out through monitoring patient satisfaction survey data, verifying and classifying reports, formulating information messages, and coordinating follow-up actions with related service units. Public relations also play a role in educating the public on the use of the application, although several challenges persist, including low levels of digital literacy among patients, limited internal socialization, and suboptimal digital communication strategies. Tk. II Udayana Hospital addresses these obstacles by strengthening coordination, utilizing digital media, and reinforcing the role of public relations as an information bridge between the hospital and the community. More specifically, the study demonstrates that optimizing the role of public relations directly contributes to the effectiveness of public information delivery through the SMILE Puskesad application, resulting in information that is more accurate, accessible, and capable of increasing public participation in patient satisfaction surveys

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the process of cultural acculturation occurring in the Balinese Muslim community in Pegayaman Village, Buleleng Regency, through Burdah art as a means of communication and cultural expression. This phenomenon demonstrates how the Muslim community in Pegayaman is able to combine Islamic values with local Balinese wisdom in traditional art practices. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with George Herbert Mead's symbolic interaction theory as the basis of analysis, which focuses on the meaning of symbols and social interactions in shaping cultural identity. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies of community leaders and Burdah artists. The results show that Burdah art is an important tool in preserving religious identity while unifying cultural differences between the Muslim and Hindu communities in Bali. Acculturation is evident in the blend of Islamic poetry with Balinese rhythms and traditional clothing, which demonstrate harmony, tolerance, and social harmony. These findings prove that traditional art can function as an effective medium of intercultural communication in creating a space for dialogue, maintaining local values, and strengthening the multicultural character of the Pegayaman community.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of interfaith marriage in the film Komang using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory. This theory emphasizes the relationship between signifier and signified as well as the concepts of langue and parole to explain the interaction between social systems and individual expression. The results of the analysis show that the visual, verbal, and symbolic signs in the film represent the clash between love and belief. Scenes such as the initial meeting at a cultural festival, family rejection, and symbolic marriage become a form of negotiation between social values and personal freedom. This film affirms that interfaith marriage in Indonesia can only be accepted through compromise with the religious norms of the majority, but still presents a message of tolerance through symbols of cultural harmony. Therefore, the film Komang is not just a romantic narrative, but a social reflection on the relationship between religion, culture, and love in a pluralistic society.

Abstract

The increasing adoption of digital marketing in tourism has encouraged destinations to utilize social media and influencer marketing as strategic tools to attract visitors. However, previous studies have largely examined the effects of social media, influencers, and destination attractiveness separately, providing limited understanding of how these factors jointly influence tourist visitation behavior, particularly in community-based tourism destinations. Addressing this gap, this study develops an integrated framework based on Digital Marketing Theory, Source Credibility Theory, and Tourism Attraction Theory to analyze the influence of social media, influencers, and destination attractiveness on tourist visits to Tukad Bindu, Kesiman Village, Bali. Using a quantitative survey approach, data were collected from 140 respondents through questionnaires and analyzed using validity and reliability tests, classical assumption tests, and multiple linear regression analysis. The results reveal that social media, influencers, and destination attractiveness each have a positive and significant effect on tourist visits, while simultaneously explaining 72.4% of the variation in visitation behavior. Among these variables, destination attractiveness demonstrates the strongest influence on tourists’ decisions to visit. This study contributes to the tourism literature by integrating digital promotion factors and destination attributes into a single analytical model, thereby extending existing knowledge on tourist behavior in community-based tourism contexts. The findings also provide practical implications for destination managers to strengthen social media engagement, establish strategic collaborations with credible influencers, and continuously enhance destination attractiveness to support sustainable growth in tourist visits.

Abstract

This study explores the communication and marketing strategies of the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) through the use of both conventional and digital media. Positioned as one of Southeast Asia’s leading literary events, UWRF not only functions as a cultural platform but also as a case study of how traditional and modern communication approaches coexist in promoting cultural tourism. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research analyzes official promotional materials, media coverage, and digital campaigns implemented by the UWRF committee. The findings reveal that while conventional media such as print advertisements, brochures, and public relations remain essential for maintaining credibility and reaching local audiences, digital platforms—particularly social media and the official website—have become central in expanding international engagement. The integration of both media types demonstrates a hybrid communication strategy that balances authenticity, accessibility, and global visibility. This study contributes to communication and cultural studies by illustrating how cultural events in Indonesia adapt marketing communication practices to the challenges of digital transformation while preserving local identity and cultural narrative.
