Abstract

Dissolved oxygen in aquaculture systems, including aquaponics systems, cannot be filled only by natural diffusion, so an artificial aeration system is needed. Suboptimal aeration levels not only affect metabolic activity, but also affect serum and fish blood performance (hematology). This study aims to evaluate the impact of the aeration system on the health and well-being of fish cultivated in an aquaponics system. The method used is by studying the literature related to the aeration system of fish farming carried out in the aquaponic system which is relevant to the keywords of aquaponic system, aeration system, fish health and hematology from various sources such as: Google Scholar, Elsevier, Springer and Research Gate. Based on the comparison of several studies, it can be concluded that the aquaponic system using an aeration system can improve fish health performance based on hematological parameters.

Abstract

The increased demand for red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) production requires a sufficient supply of high-quality juveniles. Technological innovation is crucial for developing quantifiable, highly productive, efficient, environmentally sustainable, and ecologically sound juvenile production systems. This study aimed to analyse the effect of high stocking density on the growth performance of red tilapia juveniles cultured using ultrafine bubble technology in a recirculating aquaculture system (UFBs-RAS). A completely randomised experimental design was used with four stocking density treatments: one control treatment (4 fish/L with aeration) and three treatments under the UFBs-RAS system at 4, 6, and 8 fish/L densities. Each treatment was replicated four times. The juvenile red tilapia used in this study had an average initial total length of 4.34 ± 0.23 cm and a weight of 1.47 ± 0.31 g. They were obtained from fishpond research at the FINDER UCoE Experimental Station, Universitas Padjadjaran. The findings indicated that UFBs-RAS facilitated optimal production performance, even at the maximum stocking density of 8 fish per liter. The performance metrics comprised a survival rate of 98.75%, a specific growth rate in weight of 4.93 ± 0.062%/d, a specific growth rate in length of 3.88 ± 0.05%/d, a protein efficiency ratio of 2.48 ± 0.02, a feed conversion efficiency of 96.5 ± 0.58%, and a coefficient of variation of 33.7 ± 1.2%. These data validate that incorporating UFBs-RAS is a viable and efficient method to improve the quality and productivity of red tilapia juveniles.

Abstract

Sangkuriang catfish (Clarias gariepinus) is one of the most commonly cultivated freshwater fish species in Indonesia. The high production of catfish is largely due to the efforts of fish farmers who are able to produce sufficient quantities to meet the increasing consumption demand. One of the aquaculture methods used is the BUDIKDAMBER system, which involves fish farming in buckets with high stocking densities. This study employed an experimental method using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 3 stocking density treatments with 4 replications: A (1 fish/liter), B (2 fish/liter), and C (3 fish/liter) for a period of 30 days. The fish were kept in buckets prepared for the budikdamber activity, with stocking densities adjusted according to each treatment, and were fed three times a day. Water quality was monitored every 3 days. The results of the study showed that up to a density of 3 fish/liter of Sangkuriang catfish fingerlings, there was no significant difference among the different stocking density treatments, and all treatments still demonstrated good performance. The best treatment was found in treatment C (3 fish/liter), with a survival rate of 77.25%, a feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 0.67, and a specific growth rate (SGR) of 3.28%.
