Abstract

The existence of fish aggregating devices (FADs) in a waters is able to establish a new fishing ground that potential waters. FADsareable to attract the attention of the gathering of fishes and other aquayic organisms around it, increasing the density of fish around FADs can increase the chances of successful catching operation, and therefore the FADs has benefited significantly to increase the capture fishery production significantly. The purposes of the research were to evaluate the catching composition of purse seine production using FADs and non FADs, and to examine the fectiveness of FADs. This research was conducted on February 1 - 28, 2018 located atPusongWaters, Lhokseumawe City. The survey method was used in this study. The direct sampling by following the fisherman in fishing activities was performed both the purse seine with FADs andno FADs. Total purse seine catches during the research were 4,320 kg consisting of Long Jawed Mackerel (Rastrelliger sp.) 1,280 kg (29.63%), Decapterus Fish ( Decapterus sp.) 350 kg (8,107%), skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) 845 kg (19.56 %), tuna fish (Euthynnus affinis) 720 kg (16.67%), Torpedo scad (Megalaspis cordyla) 300 kg (6.94%), Queenfish 140 kg (3.24%), and starry triggerfish (Abalistes stellaris) 685 kg (15.86%). It was concluded that the purse seine usedFADs is more effective compared to thea purse seine that does not use FADs.Keberadaan rumpon di suatu perairan mampu menarik perhatian berkumpulnya ikan dan organisme lain disekitarnya, sehingga dapat meningkatkan hasil tangkapan ikan. Abstract

Rural communities often face interrelated problems in health, education, environmental sanitation, and local economic capacity, which hinder sustainable village development. Tunong Krueng Kala Village in Aceh Besar reflects this condition, where limited access to preventive health services, low educational support for children, inadequate environmental awareness, and underutilized local potential remain key challenges. This community service article aims to describe the implementation and outcomes of a multidisciplinary empowerment program designed to strengthen community capacity through locally relevant interventions. The program was conducted through a participatory community service approach involving situation analysis, problem identification, program planning, implementation, and evaluation. The target community consisted of village residents from different age and occupational groups, while the implementing team involved university students from multiple disciplines under academic supervision and in collaboration with village authorities and local community members. The activities included blood pressure screening and hypertension education, basic literacy support for children, educational games and history learning activities, nutrition-oriented local food processing using moringa leaves, livestock health education, and environmental awareness campaigns through hygiene education and community clean-up actions. The results show that the program produced positive responses and practical benefits across several sectors. In the health activity, blood pressure screening of 24 adult participants found that only 50% were in the normal category, while the rest were classified as pre-hypertensive to moderate-severe hypertensive, indicating the importance of early detection and health education at the village level. Educational activities increased children’s enthusiasm and participation in learning, while local food processing and livestock health activities improved community knowledge and opened opportunities for household-level application. Environmental activities also strengthened awareness of hygiene and collective responsibility for village cleanliness. Overall, the program demonstrates that multidisciplinary, local potential-based community service can serve as an effective model for strengthening rural community capacity and supporting sustainable development at the village level.

Abstract

Abstract

Sabang as the westernmost region of Indonesia and bordering the Indian Ocean and the Malacca Strait has fishery potential that must be maintained so that it is sustainable. Good management of grouper fish (Epinephelus sp.) resources is a solution so that fishery potential remains sustainable, one of which is the ecosystem approach. So far, many studies related to grouper management based on an ecosystem approach have been carried out in several regions in Indonesia, but none have focused on fisheries in Sabang. Therefore, this study aims to assess the status of grouper resource management, provide management recommendations and disseminate the results of the assessment of grouper resource management status in Sabang. This research was conducted from July to August 2022, located in Sabang, Aceh. Observation and direct interviews were conducted to collect the data and then analyzed by a multi-criteria analysis with composite index development. Based on the value of these indicators, it shows that the domain of grouper fish resources in Sabang caught using the hand line is good category with a green flag model and a composite value of 82. This means that the management of grouper fish resources in Sabang has not been running optimally. So, it is necessary to improve fisheries management in several aspects to support sustainable fisheries management. Keywords:GrouperEAFMSabangFisheriesSustainability

Abstract

Healthy seagrass beds have high ecological value, characterized by high diversity and even distribution in the water. However, currently, the health condition of seagrass beds is threatened both naturally and by human activities. For example, the loss of seagrass meadows due to human activities in coastal areas, including on Maitara Island, North Maluku Province, Indonesia. The objective of this research is to identify the community structure of seagrass, and the proper management options to minimize negative impacts on damage to the seagrass meadow ecosystem and sustain seagrass resources. The study was conducted in the South Maitara and the North Maitara, during the dry season from September to October 2020 using vertical transect methods. The result shows that the average index of diversity, evenness, and dominance on Maitara Island of 1.0970, 0.6470, and 0.5892, respectively. The beaches of South Maitara and North Maitara have poor diversity, a good category for evenness, and a stable community. Enhalus acoroides has the highest density of 294 ind/m2, followed by Thalassia hemprichii around 287 ind/m2. Based on the ecosystem aproach fisheries management (EAFM) analysis, to effectively manage seagrass ecosystems in Maitara Island, a social development strategy is needed through community awareness, counseling, and capacity building in the management and utilization of seagrass ecosystems in Maitara Island to effectively manage the seagrass ecosystem in Maitara Island, a social development strategy is needed through public awareness, counseling, and capacity building in the management and utilization of the seagrass ecosystem in Maitara Island. Keywords:Seagrasscommunity structurediversitydensityevennessMaitara Island
