Abstract

Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) is a by-product of the manufacture of cooking oil. The PFAD has a high potential to be used as raw material for biofuel by catalytic cracking because it is a long-chain hydrocarbon. This research aims to study the influence of time and temperature conversion reaction to catalytic cracking reaction using zeolite catalyst synthesis. The PFAD cracking was taken place in a batch stirred tank reactor at the temperature of 240, 260, 280, 300oC for 60, 80, 100, 120 minutes. The changes in functional groups of cracking products were analyzed using FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra Red), while the analysis of components contained in the product was conducted using GCMS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectra) analysis. The highest reaction conversion result (98.7%) was obtained at a temperature of 280oC and the reaction time of 100 minutes. The cracking process did not produce biofuels, but the compounds formed were in the form of tridecanoic acid (C13H26NO2), Cholest-8-en-3-ol (C28H48O) and methyl vinyl ketone (C4H6O).Keywords: FTIR, GCMS, PFAD, zeolite synthesys

Abstract

Batu Belah Village is one of the villages located in the Air Tiris sub-district, Kampar Regency, with residents who mostly have a livelihood in agriculture. To increase the fertility of agricultural soil, fertilizer is needed. So far, the fertilizer commonly used is chemical fertilizer, but the price is relatively expensive, especially during the growing season, so it is necessary to find a solution to replace this chemical fertilizer. Organic solid fertilizer is a fertilizer that is friendly to the environment. This fertilizer can be made from agricultural and livestock waste, so it is very suitable to be developed in Batu Belah Village. The purpose of this activity is to provide knowledge and skills of the community in the technology of making organic solid fertilizer from agricultural and livestock waste. This service activity consists of two stages, namely a presentation on fertilizer manufacturing technology and the practice of making solid organic fertilizer with the farming community of Batu Belah village. The benefit of this activity is that the farming community can make their own organic solid fertilizer from agricultural and livestock waste, so that the cost of fertilizing on agricultural land can be reduced. Thus the income of the farming community can increase.

Abstract

Sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) is a chemical industrial material that is widely used as a metal cleaner, adhesive, and as a filler in the detergent, soap and toothpaste industries. Sodium silicate can be synthesized from silica dioxide (SiO2), which can be obtained through an extraction process from materials containing silica such as sand, glass bottle waste or rice husks. In this research, the synthesis of Na2SiO3 was carried out using silica extracted from Bengkalis beach sand using the acid leaching method, with a 3M HCl solution. The results of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of Bengkalis Beach sand showed that the silica content reached 89.1%. This research aims to determine the effect of the molar ratio of the NaOH reactant to the extracted SiO2 (2:1, 3:1 and 4:1) on the Na2SiO3 produced. The synthesis of Na2SiO3 was carried out using the hydrothermal method at atmospheric pressure, by reacting a 4M NaOH solution with 10 g of silica from Bengkalis sand, by heating at 110oC for an hour and stirring at 600 rpm. A molar ratio of 2:1 is the best ratio which produces 9.427g of Na2SiO3. From analysis using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the spectrum patterns obtained are suitable for compounds containing silanol (≡Si-OH) and siloxane (≡Si-O-Si≡) groups. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the synthesized compound is in accordance with standard sodium silicate. The Na2SiO3 obtained has a crystal diameter of 44.8 nm with an agglomerate-shaped morpology.

Abstract

Furfural has emerged as a value-added chemical product which generated from hemicellulose-base biomass, in the context of hardwood it called as biorefining. Several methods have been developed to produce furfural using both hydrothermal and catalytic processes. In this study, hydrolysate is used as feedstock for generating furfural by using diluted sulfuric acid and aluminium chloride. Temperature and reaction time has been considered as the valuable variable. Hydrolysate was charged with the acid-catalyst for around 90 min at certain temperature. The product analyzed by using fourier transform index refractory and excess bromine method. At this time, the highest yield of furfural for non-catalyst process was achieved at 120 oC for 90 min. Diluted acid solution by hydrochloric acid and AlCl3 1% managed to increase furfural production from hydrolysate in the mild temperature.

Abstract

Nitrocellulose is an important compound in the chemical industry, which has various crucial applications, such as the main ingredient for making quality paint, ink, and coating formulations in the printing process, as well as a propellant (explosive). Nitrocellulose as a raw propellant material is currently very popular. In this research, pineapple leaf waste has been processed as a raw material for making nitrocellulose through a nitration process. The research aims to determine the effect of the nitration process's length and the nitrating acid's composition on nitrocellulose's nitrogen content. Before the nitration process, an initial process is carried out, namely pre-treatment of pineapple fiber to obtain fiber with a cellulose purity of >92%. In the nitration process, the ratio of titrating acid (H₂SO₄:HNO₃) used is 1:3, 1:2, 2:1, 7:3, and 3:1 with a nitration time of 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. The results obtained in this research were that the pre-treatment process was able to increase the purity of cellulose in pineapple fiber by up to 93%. Then the 2:1 titrating acid formulation (H₂SO₄:HNO₃) is the best acid ratio formulation. Meanwhile, the optimum time for nitration is 60 minutes, with a nitrogen content in nitrocellulose of 12.73%. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis shows that there has been an exchange of hydroxyl groups in nitrocellulose with nitro groups, which is indicated by the presence of a peak indicating the nitro group. Apart from that, the burning test also showed that nitrocellulose can be burned faster than cellulose

Abstract

Heat Moisture Treatment (HMT) is a clean-label, residue-free physical starch modification technique that serves as a strategic solution for food diversification, aiming to reduce national reliance on imported wheat, which reached USD 2.2 billion in 2022. This systematic review of 45 selected scientific publications, out of 65 initially screened articles, evaluates the impact of HMT on rice and sorghum flour characteristics. Synthesized results indicate that HMT consistently increases gelatinization temperature (To up by 3 - 8°C), reduces peak viscosity (15 - 30%), and boosts resistant starch content from 3 - 5% to 8 - 15%. In sorghum flour, the interaction between starch and non-starch components, particularly kafirin proteins, significantly modifies the HMT response compared to pure sorghum starch. This study highlights critical research gaps, specifically regarding the need for optimal HMT parameters tailored to Indonesian local varieties and the necessity of comprehensive techno-economic analysis to facilitate industrial-scale implementation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the growth kinetics of saccharomyces cerevisiae in the bioethanol production process based on oil palm empty fruit bunch waste. Growth kinetics parameters are an important basis for fermentor design, especially the maximum growth rate constant to determine the minimum biomass residence time. The minimum biomass residence time is a critical point for fermentor operation in processing empty oil palm fruit bunches into bioethanol. This research was the laboratory experimental research method with a quantitative approach. The result in this research shows the growth kinetics parameters of saccharomyces cerevisiae have been successfully determined to produce the highest bioethanol at 5% KOH variation. Kinetic analysis established a substrate saturation coefficient (KS) of 28.195 g/L under the S < 10 K criterion, alongside a maximum specific growth rate (mM) of 0.00073 hour?¹. Furthermore, the process demonstrated a biomass yield (Yx/S) of 0.053 g/g and a product yield (YP/S) of 2.96 g/g, culminating in a final bioethanol productivity of 0.41 g/L·h. Therefore, these growth kinetics parameters can be used in designing a fermentor system for processing empty oil palm fruit bunches into bioethanol.
