Abstract

Giant gourami (Osphronemus gouramy) is one of Indonesia's most valuable freshwater fish species; however, its aquaculture development is constrained by slow growth and low survival rates. Improving water quality through the use of aquatic plants such as Lemna sp. and the application of eco-enzymes is essential. The development of Lemna sp. depends on nutrient availability, especially nitrogen (N), phosphate (P), and potassium (K), which can be enhanced by adding an eco-enzyme. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different eco-enzyme concentrations on Lemna sp. biomass production, specific growth rate, and water quality parameters in giant gourami culture systems. The research was conducted using an experimental method with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of five treatments and three replications: P0 (0 ml/L), P1 (1.5 ml/L), P2 (2.5 ml/L), P3 (3.5 ml/L), and P4 (4.5 ml/L) of eco-enzyme concentration. The results showed that eco-enzyme administration significantly influenced Lemna sp. biomass. The best results were observed in treatment P4 (4.5 ml/L), which produced the highest Lemna sp. biomass (132.87 g) and specific growth rate (4.47%). Optimal water quality was recorded in treatment P4, with temperature ranging from 26.1–29.8°C, pH 5.5–8.38, dissolved oxygen 3.10–6.42 mg/L, phosphate 0.3097–0.3872 mg/L, nitrate 0.5517–10.2414 mg/L, and CO₂ 17–40 mg/L. These findings demonstrate that eco-enzyme application at 4.5 mL/L effectively enhances Lemna sp. productivity as a natural biofilter while simultaneously improving giant gourami growth performance and survival

Abstract

Measurement of Sedimentation Rate and Water Quality in Catfish Ponds Using Sediment Trap in Rumbai Bukit Subdistrict. Rumbai Bukit in Pekanbaru City, Riau Province, has aquaculture potential supported by the fish farming group mina usaha, which cultivates catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) in earthen ponds. The aim of this community service activity was to monitor the quality of catfish ponds using sediment traps, carried out in collaboration with Student Community Service from the University of Riau over a period of 40 days. This activity involved local fish farmers in Rumbai Bukit. Ten students provided assistance to improve pond productivity by monitoring pondquality through measurements of sedimentation rate, temperature, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and pH. Following the measurements, training was conducted and followed by continuous monitoring of water quality and fish growth. The analysis of water quality in relation to fish growth resulted in a graph showing the relationship between feed application and physical water parameters. The sedimentation rate in pond one was relatively high, averaging 71.85 ml/L, compared to 16 ml/L in pond two. The temperature in pond one ranged from 32°C to 35°C, while in pond two it ranged from 31°C to 34°C. TDS levels in pond one were relatively high, ranging from 112 to 194 ppm, compared to 9 to 24 ppm in pond two. The pH in pond one ranged from 6.9 to 7.5, while in pond two it ranged from 6.3 to 7.1. This community service activity was well received, with around 70% of fish farmers enthusiastically participating. The use of sediment traps was effective in monitoring sediment accumulation in catfish ponds. Ponds with poor management showed thicker sediment layers and a decline in water quality. Regular monitoring and efficient feed management are recommended to maintain optimal water quality and fish health. This activity has made a tangible contribution by increasing fish farmers' awareness and capacity regarding the importance of regular water quality monitoring, and by encouraging the adoption of more sustainable aquaculture practices to support local food security and the environmental sustainability of aquaculture in the Rumbai Bukit area.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of QASE-based case study learning on students’ critical thinking skills in addressing peatland fire problems. This study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design to examine the effectiveness of QASE-based case study learning in improving students’ critical thinking skills. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, involving students enrolled in environmental science and disaster mitigation courses, as well as first-year students. A total of 105 students from the University of Riau participated in this study. Data were collected using Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) test instruments and observation sheets. The data were analyzed statistically using N-Gain analysis and a t-test. The results showed an improvement in students’ critical thinking scores, with the mean pretest score increasing from 69.74 to a mean posttest score of 87.28. The overall N-Gain score for students’ critical thinking skills was 0.57, which was categorized as moderate. Among the critical thinking indicators, the ability to synthesize showed the most significant improvement in classes A and B. Furthermore, the t-test results showed a significance value of p < 0.05, indicating that QASE-based case study learning was effective in improving students’ critical thinking skills in environmental learning. These findings suggest that the QASE model can be implemented as an alternative case-based learning strategy to enhance students’ Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), particularly in addressing environmental issues such as peatland fires.
