Abstract

Drought is a primary constraint on maize (Zea mays L.) productivity worldwide, threatening global food security. The development of climate-resilient crops is therefore a critical priority. This study aimed to enhance drought tolerance in maize by utilizing the CRISPR-Cas9 system to edit a key negative regulator gene involved in the drought stress response pathway. The research employed an Agrobacterium-mediated transformation method to introduce the CRISPR-Cas9 construct into maize embryos. Putative edited plants were rigorously screened using molecular techniques, including PCR and Sanger sequencing, to confirm successful gene modification. Validated T1 generation lines were then subjected to controlled drought stress conditions in greenhouse trials and subsequently evaluated in multi-location field trials. The edited maize lines exhibited significantly improved physiological and agronomic performance under water-deficit conditions, including enhanced photosynthetic efficiency, reduced leaf water loss, and a 15-20% increase in grain yield compared to non-edited wild-type controls. This study demonstrates the efficacy of CRISPR-Cas9 for developing drought-tolerant maize, offering a precise and rapid strategy for crop improvement to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Abstract

Salah satu upaya peningkatan produksi tanaman jagung manis dapat diwujudkan dengan aplikasi Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) dan pupuk organik. PGPR berperan mengatur berbagai konsentrasi zat pengatur tumbuh, membantu penyedia unsur hara dengan cara mengikat N2 di udara secara asimbiosis dan melarutkan hara P dalam tanah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh aplikasi PGPR dan pupuk organik terhadap pertumbuan dan hasil tanaman jagung manis. Penelitian dilaksanakan menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok, dua pelakuan yang disusun secara faktorial dengan tiga ulangan. Perlakuan pertama adalah aplikasi PGPR dan perlakuan kedua adalah aplikasi pupuk organik. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis menggunakan uji F dan diuji lanjut DMRT taraf 5% apabila terjadi berbeda nyata atau sangat nyata. Hasil penelitian menunjukan aplikasi PGPR berbeda nyata pada parameter tinggi tanaman umur 42 HST; diameter tongkol dan berbeda sangat nyata pada parameter berat basah tongkol; berat kering tongkol. Aplikasipupuk organik Berbeda nyata pada parameter diameter tongkol dan berbeda sangat nyata pada parameter tinggi tanaman umur 35 HST, umur 42 HST, umur 49 HST;  jumlah daun umur 35 HST, umur 42 HST, umur 49 HST; diameter batang umur 35 HST, umur 42 HST,  umur 49 HST; berat tongkol basah; berat tongkol kering. Abstract

Tomat adalah tanaman hortikultura yang memiliki banyak manfaat. Namun tanaman tomat masih banyak dibudidayakan menggunakan pupuk kimia sehingga berpotensi merusak tanah. Penelitian ini bertujuan meningkatkan produksi tomat secara organik dengan memanfaatkan limbah blotong dalam bentuk Soil block dan EM 4. Penggunaan blotong dan EM 4 dapat menambah hara phospat dan mikroba di dalam tanah. Metode penelitian menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok faktorial dengan dua ulangan yang terdiri dari faktor aplikasi blotong (B) dan EM 4 (E). Data dianalisis menggunakan uji F dan uji DMRT pada taraf 5%.  Pemberian blotong dan EM 4 berpengaruh terhadap pertumbuhan dan produksi tanaman tomat. Perlakuan tunggal B1 dan E1  merupakan perlakuan terbaik pada pertumbuhan tananam tomat, sedangkan perlakuan B2 dan E4 memiliki hasil terbaik pada produksi tomat. Kombinasi perlakuan terbaik terdapat pada perlakuan B1E3 terhadap pertumbuhan tanaman tomat. Dari hasil penelitian, penggunaan EM 4 dan Blotong dapat menambah pertumbuhan dan produksi tanaman tomat, dimana B2 merupakan perlakuan terbaik dari semua parameter.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a systematic and comprehensive literature review on the applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in vertical farming, focusing on technology optimization, economic aspects, and environmental sustainability. The method used is a systematic literature review (SLR) of open-access academic publications from reputable international databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, with a publication timeframe spanning the last five years (2018-2023). The review results indicate that the most widely applied soilless cultivation technologies are hydroponics, aeroponics, and aquaponics, with aeroponics demonstrating the highest water use efficiency. The integration of IoT, smart sensors, and AI can increase crop productivity; however, the carbon footprint of these systems is highly dependent on the energy source used. The main barriers to adoption are high initial investment and operational energy costs. This article contributes to updating and expanding the understanding of the applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in vertical farming, as well as identifying research gaps and proposing directions for technology and policy development oriented towards sustainability and profitability

Abstract

Biotechnology has emerged as a critical response to the growing challenges of sustainable agriculture, particularly in addressing food security, environmental degradation, and resource inefficiency. Increasing demand for agricultural productivity has intensified pressure on ecosystems, necessitating innovative solutions that balance yield improvement with ecological preservation. This study aims to examine the role of genetic modifications in advancing eco-friendly farming solutions, focusing on their contributions to productivity, resource efficiency, and environmental sustainability. A mixed-methods research design was employed, integrating quantitative analysis of agronomic and environmental indicators with qualitative insights from farmers and stakeholders across diverse agroecological regions. Data were collected from 120 farming units and analyzed using descriptive, inferential, and thematic techniques to ensure comprehensive interpretation. Results indicate that genetically modified crops significantly enhance yield stability, reduce pesticide usage, and improve water-use efficiency, while also contributing to better soil quality and biodiversity outcomes when integrated with sustainable practices. Findings further reveal that adoption is influenced by knowledge, regulatory clarity, and contextual compatibility. This study concludes that genetic modifications can function as a complementary component within sustainable agriculture, provided they are implemented within an ecologically informed framework. Evidence underscores the importance of integrative approaches that align technological innovation with environmental and social considerations.

Abstract

Escalating environmental pollution and climate-related stressors necessitate sensitive and mechanistically grounded tools for assessing ecosystem health. Traditional ecological indicators often detect degradation only after substantial biological damage has occurred, limiting early intervention capacity. Molecular signatures derived from multi-omics technologies offer high-resolution insight into sublethal biological responses to environmental exposure. This study aims to identify and validate integrated molecular signatures associated with contaminant gradients and to evaluate their predictive capacity for ecosystem health assessment across aquatic environments. A multi-site cross-sectional design was implemented involving 180 sentinel organisms collected along defined pollution gradients. Transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic profiling was conducted using high-throughput sequencing and mass spectrometry platforms. Multivariate statistical modeling, including principal component analysis and structural equation modeling, was applied to link molecular perturbations with contaminant concentrations and ecological indices. Significant increases in differentially expressed genes, altered protein abundance, and metabolite perturbation indices were observed in high-exposure sites (p < 0.001). Molecular signatures accurately classified exposure categories with 91% predictive accuracy and significantly predicted biodiversity decline (? = –0.68, p < 0.001). Integrated multi-omics molecular signatures provide sensitive, early-warning indicators of ecosystem impairment, enabling mechanistic linkage between environmental exposure and ecological degradation.

Abstract

Pimpinan Cabang Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah Kabupaten Jember belum sepenuhnya membuka diri terhadap lingkungan di luarnya. selama ini diskusi hanya dilakukan dengan sesama anggota IMM yang ada di Kabupaten Jember saja, belum membuka kesempatan bagi masyarakat yang berasal dari luar IMM. Selain itu, hasil diskusi dibiarkan begitu saja tanpa adanya masukan kritis untuk menyempurnakan hasil diskusi tersebut. Tujuan dari kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat dengan skema PKMS ini adalah untuk meningkatkan keahlian Pimpinan Cabang Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah Kabupaten Jember dalam membuat podcast. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilaksanakan dalam 5 (lima) tahapan pengabdian. Kelima tahapan pengabdian itu diantaranya pertama, Sosialisasi pemanfaatan podcast. Kedua, pelatihan pemanfaatan podcast. Ketiga, penerapan pemanfaatan podcast. Keempat, pendampingan dan evaluasi penerapan pemanfaatan podcast. Kelima Keberlanjutan Program terdiri dari pembentukan Tim khusus pemanfaatan podcast. Hasil pretest menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan peserta berada dalam kategori sedang yakni rata-rata 50,5. Setelah diadakan posttest kemampuan Pimpinan Cabang (PC) Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah (IMM) Kabupaten Jember rata-rata 85. Hal ini mengindikasikan bahwa kemampuan Pimpinan Cabang (PC) Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah (IMM) Kabupaten Jember meningkat rata-rata sebesar 35,5. Pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini telah mampu meningkatkan kemampuan Pimpinan Cabang (PC) Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah (IMM) Kabupaten Jember.
