Abstract

Land-use conversion from forests to oil palm plantations in Tualang District, Siak Regency, has intensified environmental and settlement pressures, requiring systematic evaluation. This study aims to analyse the spatial dynamics of forest conversion, assess environmental and settlement impacts, and formulate sustainable management strategies. A mixed-methods approach was employed, integrating spatial analysis of Landsat and Sentinel imagery, field surveys, observations, and in-depth interviews. Spatial change analysis and SWOT analysis were applied to interpret land-use dynamics and management options. The results indicate that from 2015 to 2025, oil palm expansion increased markedly, with forest and peatland conversion accounting for more than one-quarter of the total area. These changes led to soil degradation, biodiversity loss, increased runoff, water contamination, and reduced community access to natural resources. The proposed strategies emphasize conserving ecological buffers, strengthening community monitoring capacity, enforcing land-use regulations, and promoting sustainable plantation practices. Overall, integrated spatial planning and community participation are essential to ensure environmentally sustainable oil palm development.

Abstract

In Malaysia, flash floods or major floods often occur in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, flooding is a natural phenomenon that occurs when the volume of water flowing in rivers, lakes, or other bodies of water overflows onto land. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of flood vulnerability and determine flood mitigation strategies. This research is descriptive quantitative, which describes the phenomenon of flood disasters through mapping results. To produce a map of flood-prone areas, mapping was carried out using ArcGIS with a scoring method to see flood hazard vulnerability. The results of the flood vulnerability mapping study in Kuala Lumpur show critical conditions with almost 90% of the total area of 27.195.47 hectares categorized as vulnerable to very vulnerable to flooding. Analysis using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method identified three priority mitigation strategies, namely Regulation (57.7%) as the highest priority which includes policy enforcement and implementation of MSMA, followed by Education (25.8%) to increase public awareness and preparedness, and Conservation (16.5%) through ecological rehabilitation and green infrastructure. The integration of these three strategies is necessary to create a comprehensive and sustainable flood mitigation framework, taking into account the high urbanization and climate change that continue to increase flood risks in the Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area.

Abstract

A flood disaster is one of the disasters that can cause severe damage in the occurrence of floods because, in addition to causing property damage, flash floods can also cause loss of life. Floods are a disaster that often occurs in Indonesia, and Kampar Regency in Riau Province is one of the most affected areas. Therefore, it is important for all levels of society to adequately prepare to deal with the potential consequences of the flood disaster. This study was conducted with three main objectives, namely: first, to analyze the impact of floods; second, to analyze the level of teacher preparedness in dealing with floods; and third, to formulate a teacher preparedness strategy in dealing with floods at SMA Negeri 1 Perhentian Raja, Kampar Regency, Riau Province. Data were collected using interviews and questionnaires, in addition to AHP analysis. A mixed-method approach was used in this study. The study results indicate that the consequences of the flood disaster at SMA Negeri 1 Perhentian Raja include losses and damage to existing facilities and infrastructure. In addition, the level of teacher preparedness in dealing with floods hampers the learning process and damages school facilities and infrastructure. Regarding teacher preparedness in facing flood disasters, it can be classified into the 'ready' category. Based on the AHP analysis of teacher preparedness strategies in facing flood disasters, there are five alternatives that are the main priorities for teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Perhentian Raja, Kampar Regency, Riau Province.
