Abstract

Cultural tourism development plays an important role in maintaining destination sustainability amid the dominance of modern entertainment tourism. Chin Swee Caves Temple in the Genting Highlands, Malaysia, represents a cultural and spiritual tourism destination characterized by distinctive architectural, historical, and religious values and has potential as a contextual learning resource. Previous studies on Genting Highlands have largely focused on entertainment tourism and economic development, while limited attention has been given to the integration of cultural tourism, spatial analysis, and educational functions. This study aims to analyze cultural tourism potential, identify GIS-based cultural tourism zoning, and formulate development strategies using SWOT analysis integrated with the educational role of the site. The research employed a mixed-method approach combining field observations, interviews, and documentation with spatial analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Internal and external factors influencing tourism development were evaluated using IFAS and EFAS matrices. The findings show that Chin Swee Caves Temple is positioned in Quadrant I, indicating a growth-oriented strategy supported by strong internal factors and favorable external opportunities. Key strengths include accessibility, environmental comfort, strategic location, and the aesthetic and spiritual value of traditional Chinese architecture, while the main challenges relate to limited cultural interpretation, visitor safety management, local community involvement, and competition with modern tourism attractions. The novelty of this study lies in integrating GIS-based spatial zoning with SWOT strategic analysis to support cultural tourism development while positioning the site as a contextual learning resource for geography and social studies education.

Abstract

This study examines the position and strategic status of Geography as a secondary school subject in Indonesia and Malaysia, focusing on its compulsory or elective placement, curriculum depth, and contribution to students’ geopolitical understanding. The research aims to highlight the novelty of subject positioning analysis rather than pedagogy alone, addressing how curricular structures shape geopolitical literacy outcomes. Employing a qualitative descriptive comparative design, the study integrates curriculum document analysis, semi-structured stakeholder interviews, and SWOT analysis to identify similarities, differences, strengths, and challenges in both education systems. Data sources include Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum and Malaysia’s Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah (KSSM), supported by relevant literature and educator perspectives. Key findings show that Geography holds a strategic role in both countries by fostering spatial and geospatial literacy, regional awareness, and understanding of national and global issues, yet its positioning differs: Indonesia emphasizes Geography within social science specialization with stronger geopolitical orientation, while Malaysia introduces it at lower secondary but shifts it to an elective subject at upper secondary with broader environmental and development themes. The study implies that strengthening Geography’s geopolitical contribution requires clearer curriculum integration, sustained subject continuity, enhanced teacher professional development, and wider use of geospatial technologies to better equip students for contemporary geopolitical challenges.

Abstract

This study investigates how the primary education curricula of Indonesia and Malaysia—Indonesia’s Kurikulum Merdeka and Malaysia’s Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah (KSSR)—compare in terms of curriculum relevance, depth of learning, and alignment between objectives, pedagogy, and assessment. Primary education plays a crucial role in developing foundational competencies and shaping long-term educational outcomes, making curriculum reform a central policy priority in Southeast Asia. Using a qualitative comparative research design, the study relies exclusively on Observation, interviews, and document analysis to ensure methodological consistency. Data were drawn from official curriculum frameworks, national education policy documents, and relevant scholarly literature from both countries. The analysis examined curriculum structure, content organization, pedagogical orientation, and assessment systems to identify key similarities and differences. The findings indicate that Kurikulum Merdeka emphasizes instructional flexibility, learner-centered and interdisciplinary learning, and character education, whereas KSSR prioritizes structured progression, mastery of foundational skills, early STEM integration, and national standardization. These contrasting approaches reflect differing governance models and national priorities in balancing innovation with accountability. This study contributes to comparative curriculum research by offering a novel cross-national perspective on two major Southeast Asian curriculum reforms and highlighting the importance of contextual alignment, teacher capacity, and balanced implementation strategies for improving primary education quality and relevance.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the strategic role of the Petronas Twin Towers as an international tourism symbol of Malaysia by analyzing their contribution to nation branding and competitiveness in the face of global competition dynamics. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a single case study approach, utilizing primary data from field observations and secondary data from corporate reports. Data analysis was conducted using a SWOT analysis integrated with Internal Factors Analysis Summary (IFAS) and External Factors Analysis Summary (EFAS) matrices to determine the strategic position of the destination. The results indicate that the Petronas Twin Towers possess a strong competitive advantage, with internal strengths (score 2.25) outweighing weaknesses (score 1.60) and external opportunities (score 1.97) exceeding threats (score 1.45). The strategic analysis places the destination in Quadrant I (Aggressive Strategy), driven by its status as a global visual icon and the successful implementation of the Green Building Index (GBI) Gold certification. Consequently, the study recommends an aggressive growth strategy focused on strengthening brand equity to capture new markets specifically Middle Eastern and Gen-Z travelers and developing "Eco-Edutourism" programs that leverage the building’s sustainability features.

Abstract

This study examines the low Geography learning outcomes of Grade X students at SMAN 12 Sijunjung due to limited use of instructional media and low student engagement. The objective is to determine the effect of video-based learning media on students’ learning outcomes compared to conventional teaching methods. This research uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design (nonequivalent control group). The sample consists of two classes: one experimental class using video media and one control class using conventional methods. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test and analyzed using statistical tests (t-test). In conclusion, the use of video media is effective in improving Geography learning outcomes and is recommended for classroom implementation.
