Abstract

The snake fruit processing company UD Salacca faces several challenges in its snake fruit processing activities, including people, machines, methods and the environment. The aim of this research is to identify the challenges faced by UD Salacca in snake fruit production. The risk management method used in this research follows the ISO 31000:2008 guidelines using the House of Risk (HOR) Model, which includes steps for risk identification, risk analysis, risk evaluation, and risk management. 22 risk events (risk factors) have been identified from 9 process activities and 17 risk agents (risk causing factors), of which there are 5 high priority risk causes. The causes of this risk include the mixing process taking less than three hours, weather and pest factors, not being careful when loading, and not being careful in the sorting process using traditional grinding equipment. From the research results, 18 proposed mitigation strategies were found from 9 process activities. Some of the strategies proposed include the use of machines in the ripening process, the use of tools to peel snake fruit, the use of personal protective equipment when working, supervision and implementation of work operational standards during harvest, and the use of assessment checklists when sorting snake fruit. Early handling strategies are needed by salacca businesses to anticipate major risks. These results can be used to increase the company's effectiveness in handling risk management

Abstract

As business competition intensifies, an organization needs to streamline operations and improve plant performance, focusing on minimizing waste. At Company XYZ, inefficient processes have led to persistent waste in crude palm oil (CPO) production, particularly in the forms of motion, waiting, and transportation. The objective of this study is to identify waste in the CPO production, analyze its root causes, and propose actionable improvements. A lean manufacturing approach was employed using Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Waste Assessment Model (WAM), Waste Assessment Questionnaire (WAQ), Value Stream Mapping Tools (VALSAT), and Cause-and-Effect Diagram methodologies. The VSM analysis revealed motion, waiting, and transportation as the primary waste categories. Waste identification using WAM ranked motion as the most significant waste (19.39%), followed by waiting (14.91%), transportation (14.57%), overproduction (14.23%), defects (14.21%), inventory (14.17%), and overprocessing (8.52%). Process Activity Mapping (PAM) identified 34 activities, with 50% being value-added, 9% non-value-added, and 41% necessary but non-value-added. This research improves operational performance and productivity in CPO production using lean tools. These interventions are expected to reduce waste and enhance operational performance significantly.

Abstract

Lean systems and ergonomics are two organizational approaches that were initially practiced independently. Over time, however, it has become evident that while lean methodology emphasizes efficiency and waste reduction, it often overlooks the human factor, which can compromise worker health and safety. On the other hand, applying ergonomics without incorporating lean principles may lead to inefficiencies and increased costs. This trade-off has sparked growing interest in integrating ergonomic considerations into lean practices within manufacturing. Despite this interest, comprehensive studies on lean ergonomics remain scarce. This research aims to explore the development of lean ergonomics implementation over the past five years. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology, the study analyzed articles from two Scopus-indexed databases, identifying 196 articles containing the keywords Lean, Ergonomics, and Manufacturing Industries. Following the PRISMA framework and applying inclusion criteria, only 18 papers were found to thoroughly address the integrated implementation of lean ergonomics in manufacturing industries. The majority of these studies originated from Portugal (33.33%) and India (16.67%). Case studies emerged as the dominant research methodology (55.56%), leading to the development of lean ergonomic tools such as Ergo-VSM, ErgoSMED, and WIDEA. Other methodologies included literature reviews (22.22%), qualitative research (16.67%), and grounded theory (5.56%). The findings suggest that implementing lean ergonomics has positive impacts, including reduced setup times, decreased ergonomic risks, and improved workplace conditions. While ergonomic interventions may involve additional costs, these are viewed as long-term investments. In conclusion, the existing literature indicates that the implementation of lean ergonomics is still limited and lacks comprehensiveness. Future research could focus on practical applications in industry and evaluate their effectiveness to strike a balance between operational efficiency and worker well-being.

Abstract

The definition and function of inventory management reveal the importance of modern industry in formulating policies that regulate the supply of raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products. Unfortunately, most companies fail to consider the characteristics of their raw materials when determining inventory strategies. Raw materials that are perishable are those that consider their service life and storage time. Inventory management plays a crucial role in supply chain management, especially for perishable raw materials, such as food products. PT X, a food business in Padang, experienced difficulty in meeting the demand for rendang products due to a lack of raw materials. Therefore, this study aims to develop an inventory management model that takes into account the perishable raw materials' expiration time. The model development consists of three stages: model development design, inventory model formulation, and model testing. The proposed model resulted in a storage time interval of five days and an optimal order quantity of 34 kg of meat with a safety stock of 14 kg. Implementing this model led to lower total inventory costs for PT X than the actual conditions of the company. The total inventory cost obtained using this model is Rp279,797,822. This study emphasizes the importance of considering the characteristics of raw materials in determining inventory strategies to optimize inventory management effectively and efficiently. The study's findings can serve as a reference for other food businesses encountering similar inventory management challenges in the perishable food industry.

Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the egg-laying chicken feeder that was designed at egg-laying chicken farm small and medium enterprise (SME). The main reason of this tool design was due to the worker’s complain of feeling pain during the feeding process. Evaluation was performed based on Nordic Body Map questionnaire result, physiological workload, and NIOSH lifting equation calculation. The observed work ranged from the feed filling in the basket until all feeds were distributed. The results showed that the %CVL was in the range of 18%-30% and the energy consumption of workers was in the range of 1.24-3.00 Kcal/minute. Thus, physiologically, the work activities carried out by the feed workers were categorized as very light workload. Meanwhile, evaluation using Lifting Index (LI) methods in the process of feeding showed the LI value ranged from 0.9-1, therefore this activity is safe to perform manually. Based on the prototype evaluation on the feeding aid, the process of feeding activities was more effective 1.5 times faster than the old tools. In addition, with the use of this new tool, the feeding process was easier to adjust the dose each time.

Abstract

Construction project implementation process is often found inefficiency and problems at every stage of the construction process. Inefficiencies are caused because construction projects have high levels of fragmentation. The high level of fragmentation cannot be separated from the complexity and many work items on construction projects. To reduce the problem of inefficiencies in the implementation of construction projects required good supply chain management or better known as supply chain management (SCM) on construction projects. Therefore it is necessary to study the management of SCM in the construction project to reduce the inefficiency that occurred. SCM management of construction projects is done by designing SCM performance measurement systems in construction projects. This performance measurement system produces indicators that are combined with the Supply Chain Operation Reference (SCOR) method. So it helps in performing SCM performance measurement on construction projects. From the design results, obtained 14 SCM performance indicators on construction projects. The performance indicators are then used to perform SCM performance measurement of cement plant construction projects. From the measurement results obtained SCM performance value of 41 from a scale of 100. This shows the performance of SCM on construction projects for the construction of the cement plant is at a marginal level.
