Abstract

This study explores the important role of Muhammadiyah Sufism in building character, optimising the purification of students' beliefs, and exploring the positive impact of the Islamic spirituality approach implemented by Muhammadiyah. The research method used involves qualitative data collection with a phenomenological approach involving semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation with Muhammadiyah educational actors who have implemented the Sufi approach, namely the principal, teachers, and several students of Muhammadiyah Elementary School, Lahat. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman method, which focuses on the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion, for data validity techniques using triangulation. The research findings show that Muhammadiyah Sufism can strengthen the beliefs of Muhammadiyah Elementary School Lahat students, increase a deep understanding of Islamic teachings, and form positive characters in living their daily lives. This can be done through spiritual practices such as reading the Qur'an, sunnah prayers, dhikr, and sunnah fasting. This study also found that the implementation of Sufism in Muhammadiyah education helps students recognise and avoid practices inconsistent with pure Islamic teachings, such as excessive tawassul (circumambulation) and extreme meditation. Thus, Muhammadiyah Sufism education serves as a tool to purify faith and shape individuals with noble character and positive societal contributions. This study emphasises the importance of integrating Sufi values into the educational curriculum to create a generation that is intelligent, ethical, and capable of facing the challenges of the modern era. A limitation of this study is its limited focus on Muhammadiyah Elementary School in Lahat, which may reduce the generalizability of the findings regarding the implementation of Sufism in the broader context of Muhammadiyah education.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the existence of superior Islamic schools in strengthening the competitiveness of national education in the midst of the dynamics of globalization, technological developments, and the transformation of the modern education system. This study focuses on the role of leading Islamic schools in improving academic quality, building the religious character of students, and developing learning innovations and quality-oriented educational governance. The research uses a qualitative approach with the library research method through the analysis of various scientific sources in the form of journals, books, and previous research results that are relevant to Islamic education and educational competitiveness. The results of the study show that superior Islamic schools are able to build a competitive advantage through the application of an integrative curriculum that combines general knowledge with Islamic values holistically. In addition, strengthening religious culture, the use of digital technology in learning, the professionalism of educators, and visionary school leadership are strategic factors in improving the quality of Islamic educational institutions. The existence of superior Islamic schools also reflects the ability of Islamic education to respond to the demands of social change without ignoring the identity and spiritual values that are the main foundation of education. Thus, superior Islamic schools have an important contribution in producing human resources that are not only academically competitive, but also have moral integrity, adaptive abilities, and religious character that are relevant to the needs of national education in the era of globalization.

Abstract

The modernization of Islamic universities in Indonesia cannot be separated from the role of academics who have studied in Western universities since the 1970s. This study aims to examine the contribution of alumni of Western universities to the modernization process of Islamic Religious Universities (PTKI) in Indonesia, both in the aspects of scientific methodology, curriculum, institutional, and scientific integration discourse. This study uses a qualitative approach of the type of library research with historical-descriptive and analytical-critical methods, through content analysis of primary data in the form of works of related figures (Harun Nasution, Mukti Ali, Nurcholish Madjid, Azyumardi Azra, and others) as well as secondary data from books, scientific journals, and policy documents. The results of the study show that alumni of Western universities bring a rational, historical, and phenomenological approach that transforms Islamic studies from a dogmatic-normative nature to a critical-analytical nature, encourages the transformation of the curriculum from the focus of classical Islamic science to a more interdisciplinary one, and becomes a driver of the transfer of the status of a number of IAINs to UIN as a symbol of the integration of religious science and general science. These alumni also play a role in adapting the discourse on the Islamization of science and the paradigm of scientific integration-interconnection into the context of Indonesian Islamic higher education. Although there are concerns about the potential for a shift in the authenticity of classical Islamic science due to the dominance of the Western paradigm, the research findings conclude that the contribution of these alumni in general has a positive impact on strengthening the academic base, improving the quality of research, and openness of PTKI to the development of global science without losing its Islamic identity.

Abstract

This article examines the movement and modernization of Islamic education as a response to the backwardness of the Muslim community caused by static thinking (jumud) and the practice of taqlid. The study employs a library research method with content analysis of literature from the past ten years. The findings indicate that the modernization of Islamic education is understood as a process of renewing paradigms and educational systems aimed at improving the quality of education, in line with the meaning of reform. There are three main patterns of modernization: orientation toward Western educational systems, orientation toward the purification of Islamic teachings, and orientation toward the cultural wealth of each nation with a spirit of nationalism. Reformist figures such as Muhammad Abduh, Jamaluddin al-Afghani, and Ahmad Dahlan played an important role in integrating Islamic values with modern needs. The challenges of modernization in the digital era include value secularization, moral crises, cultural globalization, as well as limited digital literacy and educational infrastructure. This article emphasizes that the modernization of Islamic education is a necessity to maintain the relevance of Islamic teachings while responding to the demands of the times.

Abstract

This study examines the institutional and epistemological development of three types of State Islamic Religious Universities (PTKIN) in Indonesia, namely State Islamic Religious Colleges (STAIN), State Islamic Religious Institutes (IAIN), and State Islamic Universities (UIN). Using the library research method with a qualitative approach, this study examines the institutional transformation from STAIN to IAIN and then UIN as part of the dynamics of modernization of Islamic education. Epistemologically, the change in institutional status is not merely an expansion of the structure, but reflects a paradigmatic shift from the Islamization of a single discipline to the integration-interconnection of science. The case study at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang shows significant growth: from 28 study programs with 9,200 students in 2010 to 63 study programs with 24,750 students in 2024. The findings of the study illustrate that the conversion to UIN encourages a real epistemic expansion, despite being faced with the challenge of Islamic scientific identity in the midst of the expansion of general science. This research contributes by offering an epistemological-institutional comparative analysis framework that has not been widely developed in the Indonesian Islamic education literature.

Abstract

The phenomenon of celebrity clerics in Indonesia represents a crossroads between traditional religious authority and contemporary popular cultural dynamics. This research aims to explore in depth the socio-religious background of the emergence of celebrity scholars, identify their main forms of activities, compare their positions with conventional scholars, analyze their role in the formation of religious culture, and evaluate their socio-religious contributions in Indonesian Muslim society. Using a qualitative approach with a critical literature study design, this study analyzes the sources from the indexed journals Sinta 1-3 and Scopus Q1-Q3 published in the last decade. Data analysis was carried out through deductive thematic based on the framework of Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital, Stark & Bainbridge's religious economics, and Hjarvard's religious mediatization. The findings suggest that celebrity clerics emerged in response to the democratization of digital information that shifted religious authority from institutional to personal. They operate through the digital media ecosystem by adopting the logic of entertainment without abandoning religious substance, albeit with the consequence of a reduction in the depth of content. Socio-religiously, this phenomenon contributes to the expansion of the reach of da'wah and the reconfiguration of popular Islamic identity in Indonesia, while presenting challenges in the form of religious commodification and fragmentation of ulema authority. The novelty of this research lies in the integrative analytical framework that connects the mediatization of religion, symbolic capital, and popular cultural dynamics in the context of Indonesian Islam.

Abstract

The acceleration of technology in the 21st-century era of disruption and the transition toward the BANI (Brittle, Anxious, Non-Linear, Incomprehensible) framework confront Islamic Education with complex existential challenges, impacting both student morality and institutional readiness. This study aims to map the primary challenges of Islamic Education, identify emerging trends in curriculum innovation and learning methodologies, and formulate contemporary educator competency standards relevant to modern demands. Employing a systematic literature review approach, this study analyzed 20 empirical journal articles on Islamic Education published between 2019 and 2026. The findings reveal that the core challenges center on digital moral disorientation among students and limited technological infrastructure. In response, a strategic shift has emerged toward reconstructing holistic-integralistic curricula that merge science and religion, optimizing instructional digital ecosystems such as AI and online platforms, and establishing tripartite collaborations with families. Furthermore, a new consensus demands that Islamic Education teachers transform into agents of religious moderation by mastering techno-pedagogical skills and employing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates Sufism values with digital literacy. Ultimately, this study concludes that navigating the era of disruption requires a dynamic harmonization between cyber-technological acceleration and moral-spiritual resilience to foster a globally competitive generation of insan kāmil (the perfect human)

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the internalization of transformative Islamic Religious Education values in shaping students’ character, morality, and social behavior. This research used a qualitative approach with a literature review method. The data were obtained from literature discussing transformative Islamic Religious Education, transformative learning, value internalization, character education, morality, the role of Islamic Religious Education teachers, and students’ social behavior. The data were analyzed through thematic content analysis, including data reduction, categorization, interpretation, and synthesis. The findings show that the internalization of transformative Islamic Religious Education values takes place through value transformation, value transaction, and value transinternalization. This process is strengthened through critical reflection, teacher role modeling, religious habituation, active learning, and a supportive school culture. The main findings indicate that transformative Islamic Religious Education contributes to the development of religious character, honesty, discipline, responsibility, tolerance, care, and cooperation. This study concludes that transformative Islamic Religious Education does not only support students’ mastery of religious knowledge but also shapes their moral awareness and positive social behavior.

Abstract

This article examines how sexuality education in Indonesian pesantren can reconcile Islamic tradition with contemporary reproductive health concerns. Although sexuality-related material has long existed in pesantren through classical fiqh and yellow-book instruction, it has largely been limited to legal-formal themes such as taharah, puberty, menstruation, aurat, and marital ethics, with little attention to consent, bodily boundaries, reproductive health literacy, and sexual violence prevention. Using a qualitative critical literature review, this study analyzes Islamic texts and scholarly publications published between 2015 and 2025, retrieved through Scopus and Google Scholar using the keywords sex education, pesantren, Islamic tradition, and modernity. Data were interpreted through content analysis and critical discourse analysis to identify possible intersections between maslahah-based Islamic reasoning and contemporary health-oriented perspectives. The findings show that the main challenge is not the absence of religious material, but the lack of epistemic reconstruction linking classical concepts to adolescents’ lived realities. Three major pathways emerged: expanding sexuality education beyond marital issues, integrating sexual violence prevention and bodily protection into the curriculum, and enriching traditional pedagogy with dialogical and participatory approaches. The study also finds that implementation requires collaboration among kyai, teachers, students, parents, communities, and the state to address sociocultural taboos and institutional limitations. This article argues that pesantren should be viewed not as barriers to sexuality education, but as institutions with internal theological and pedagogical resources for contextual renewal. It offers a conceptual framework for culturally grounded and religiously legitimate sexuality education in pesantren. Framework highlights the possibility of reconciling tradition and modernity.
