Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of teaching strategies to improve reading comprehension among eighth-grade students in Indonesian junior high schools, where English is treated as a foreign language. Limited exposure and practice outside the classroom contribute to underwhelming reading proficiency. The research adopts a qualitative case study approach involving two English teachers and eighth-grade students. Data collection methods include observations, interviews, and documentation, while analysis is conducted using Miles and Hubberman’s interactive model. Findings reveal that teachers employ two primary strategies for teaching descriptive text comprehension: Think Aloud and Question Answer Relationships (QARs). The Think Aloud strategy involves guiding students to set reading purposes and make predictions during the pre-reading stage. During reading, students identify key information, resolve unfamiliar vocabulary, and make connections across texts. Post-reading activities include summarizing, evaluating comprehension through performance, and formative assessments. QARs strategy focuses on building background knowledge before reading. Teachers introduce four types of questions – Right There, Think and Search, Author and Me, and On My Own – to guide text interpretation during reading. Reflection and comprehension tests, such as worksheets, are conducted post-reading to assess learning outcomes. The study highlights the effectiveness of interactive and structured approaches in fostering deeper engagement and improving students’ reading comprehension abilities. These strategies offer practical insights for educators seeking to enhance reading proficiency through targeted interventions.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the reduction of criminal penalties as a form of reward or incentive for justice collaborators. This is prompted by the pro and con debate over the verdict of the Panel of Judges in the case of Barada Richard Eliezer, who was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months for the planned murder of Brigadir Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat. The legal issue revolves around the absence of clear criteria for the extent of such leniency, as it remains within the prerogative of the judge. This research is conducted using normative legal research, involving an analysis of all relevant laws and regulations related to the legal issue under investigation. These include the Supreme Court Circular Letter Number 4 of 2011 on the treatment of crime reporters (whistleblowers) and justice collaborators in specific criminal cases, and the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 31 of 2014 concerning Amendments to Law Number 13 of 2006 on Witness and Victim Protection. The research results suggest the need for consistency in judicial decisions regarding the extent of sentence reduction for justice collaborators. The author recommends considering the Italian regulations in dealing with organized crime, where defendants who are willing to become justice collaborators, thereby assisting in uncovering criminal groups and providing necessary evidence, may receive reduced prison sentences. A life sentence can be replaced with a prison term of 12 to 20 years, and other sentences can be reduced by one-third to two-thirds. According to the author, this reduction can be determined based on the maximum criminal penalty they face, as stipulated in Article 199 of the Draft Criminal Procedure Code (RUU KUHAP).

Abstract

The use of Indonesian in teaching and learning interactions is a form of communication. Interactions carried out by students to lecturers can be in the form of conversations, dialogues, or questions about everything related to what students are feeling or complaining about. The speech acts used in discussions vary widely because they generally come from different regions. It is this impression that makes researchers interested in studying illocutionary speech acts in the lecture process. This study specifically aims to describe the use of illocutionary speech acts between students and lecturers of the Indonesian language and literature education study program at UMN Al Washliyah. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were students and lecturers in learning interactions in Indonesian language and literature education study program classes. The object of research is speech acts, especially illocutionary speech acts which are forms of student speech to lecturers. In this study, data collection was carried out using two methods, namely (1) the listening method and (2) the speaking method. The results of the study show that illocutionary speech acts between lecturers and students during the teaching and learning process take place in the form of declaration, representative, expressive, directive and commissive speech acts.

Abstract

Indonesian language functions as the primary medium of academic communication in higher education, yet language errors persist among university students. This study investigated the forms, frequencies, and causal factors of language errors among Indonesian Language and Literature Education students at STKIP Budidaya Binjai. Employing qualitative descriptive methodology, the research collected data from 20 students in semesters III and V through systematic observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentary analysis of over 200 written samples during a 14-week period. Results revealed five error categories with varying frequencies: non-standard words (38%), code mixing (25%), ineffective sentences (15%), spelling errors (12%), and morphological errors (10%). Analysis demonstrated substantial contextual variation, with digital communication platforms showing significantly higher error rates than formal academic contexts. Primary causal factors included informal language habits reinforced through peer interaction, pervasive social media influence, and insufficient emphasis on formal register maintenance. The findings indicate that students possess greater linguistic competency than aggregate error rates suggest but demonstrate selective application of standard forms based on perceived formality requirements. This research contributes empirical evidence for developing targeted pedagogical interventions including explicit register instruction, vocabulary formality training, and structured language development activities to enhance communicative competence among prospective educators in Indonesian teacher education contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of a picture card-based language game in improving the early reading skills of first-grade students at the UPT SD Negeri 060837, Medan Barat District. This study also identifies the obstacles faced and the solutions implemented during the learning process. This type of research uses a qualitative field research approach. Data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data display/presentation, and conclusions/verification. The research method used is classroom action research (CAR) which consists of two cycles with stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subjects are first-grade students, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study showed that the use of language games using picture letter cards significantly improved students' motivation and early reading skills. Students' activeness and enthusiasm increased, as evidenced by their improved ability to recognize letters, syllables, and words. Challenges identified included limited media, teachers' lack of experience in using this method, and students' low self-confidence. Solutions implemented included teacher training, increased creativity in media use, and support for a conducive learning environment. In conclusion, the application of language games through the media of picture letter cards is an effective method to improve the early reading skills of first grade students. With the right approach, this game not only improves reading skills, but also creates a fun and interactive learning atmosphere
