Abstract

Chemistry teachers are required to have four competencies which include pedagogic, personality, social and professional competencies. Some of the teacher's limitations that have been identified are weak literacy and critical thinking skills, which causes chemistry learning to be more theoretical. This is one of the causes of the low interest and motivation of students to study chemistry. To overcome this, it is necessary to conduct workshop and deepen the material for teachers, so that teachers are expected to become more confident in presenting chemistry lessons that are interesting and relevant to everyday life. The workshop was carried out by adopting a Problem-based Learning (PBL) learning model to provide experience for teachers as facilitators that stimulates students in chemistry learning. Thermochemistry topic was chosen because it is a good stimulus in solving problems in everyday phenomena through chemical knowledge. Through this workshop, outputs are produced in the form of curriculum analysis and learning strategies for thermochemical materials that are ready to be applied by teachers.

Abstract

Blending of biopolymers with other polymers i.e. PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) is expected to improve the processability and properties of biopolymer-based films. This blending leads to the new molecular structures due to interactions between the polymers, which affect the crystallinity and morphology of the films, as results, enhance the mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of the biopolymer/PVP films. This review aims to provide an overview of the effect of PVP on the molecular interactions, crystallinity, and morphology of biopolymer films. such as chitosan, ethyl cellulose (EC), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). PVP can form hydrogen bonds with chitosan, HEC, and HPMC. Incorporating PVP with HPMC and HEC results in a uniform film morphology, whereas higher PVP ratios in chitosan/PVP blends can cause cracks, indicating the necessity for an optimal ratio to achieve a homogeneous matrix. The addition of PVP to EC results in discoidal features within the film matrix, signifying separate phases and immiscibility between PVP and EC. PVP also able to disrupts the semicrystalline structure of HEC and HPMC, making the film more amorphous.

Abstract

Information literacy is closely related to critical thinking skills. Critical thinking skills are related to exploring and evaluating information to make argumentation with relevant and appropriate information. It includes analyzing and synthesizing information to solve a problem where these activities are part of information literacy. Thus, information literacy-based learning should be able to enhance critical thinking skills. This study aims to determine the correlation between critical thinking skills and student’s information literacy enhancement through learning chemistry with the PjBL-IL model on the biogas production context. This study used a pre-experimental method - one group pretest-posttest design involving 32 high school students. Students' critical thinking and information literacy skills were measured using tests. Critical thinking skills and information literacy enhancement on high and medium category with N-gain score are 72.90% and 66.20% respectively and show a low correlation with a correlation coefficient value of 0.144. Where the basic support indicator has a negative correlation (r = -0.105). Thus, critical thinking skills enhancement is not always in line with information literacy.

Abstract

The discharge of organic dyes into water systems poses severe risks to human health and aquatic ecosystems. A remarkable technique that is increasingly recognized for dyes degradation is photocatalysis. This work aims to investigate the role of zinc oxide/nickel oxide (ZnO/NiO) nanocomposites in enhancing photocatalytic degradation efficiency of dyes molecules. The nanocomposites were prepared using a simple ultrasonication technique and analyzed through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The XRD pattern of the ZnO/NiO nanocomposites exhibited characteristic peaks aligned with the ZnO and NiO phases, referring to JCPDS standards. The SEM images of nanocomposites featured the rod and irregular flake-like structures with the average size of 80 nm. The nanocomposites showed the highest dye photodegradation efficiency (RB 93.65% and MO 94.82%) in view of a larger semicircular diameter and lowest band gap energy as verified by Nyquist plot and DFT calculation. These results emphasized the synergistic effect of ZnO/NiO nanocomposites in promoting dye photocatalytic degradation.
