Abstract

This study investigates how Grice’s Cooperative Principle and Leech’s Politeness Principle function in unscripted podcast dialogues on the topic of plastic surgery. While these pragmatic frameworks have been widely applied in analyzing spoken interaction, their application in informal digital contexts such as podcasts remains underexplored. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzes transcripts from two YouTube podcast episodes: Megan Fox: My Plastic Surgery Story by Call Her Daddy and Why We Became Plastic Surgeons by Dr. CalvertTV. The findings reveal that speakers generally adhere to the maxims of quality, quantity, relation, and manner, while also applying politeness strategies including tact, modesty, and agreement. However, instances of flouting were also observed, often serving rhetorical purposes such as humor, emphasis, or the negotiation of sensitive topics. The study concludes that both Gricean and Leechian principles remain relevant in analyzing digital communication. Podcast discourse provides valuable insight into how meaning, relational alignment, and conversational coherence are co-constructed in real-time, shaped by both linguistic choices and social context.

Abstract

The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus is a well-known poem that expresses ideas of immigration, freedom, and national identity. This study aims to analyze the poem through two perspectives, namely poetic structure and cultural meaning. It focuses on how poetic devices such as metaphor, imagery, symbolism, alliteration and personification contribute to shaping the poem’s message. Using a qualitative method, the research applied Kemple's (2019) semiotic theory to interpret poetic devices as symbolic signs, while Hall's (2013) theory of representation was used to examine how the poem reflects and responds to changing social contexts. The analysis reveals that these poetic elements build a persuasive and emotional message that supports the poem’s theme of inclusivity and hope. It also shows that the meaning of the poem has shifted over time, especially in relation to modern immigration debates. This research highlights the poem’s dual role as a literary text and a cultural artefact. The findings suggest that poetic language can carry lasting social influence and that literature remains a relevant tool in understanding national identity.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the character education values in the Characterization of Circe in the Circe novel by Madeline Miller based on the 5 Core Values of the Ministry of Education and Culture (2017), namely religious, nationalist, independent, cooperative, and integrity. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with a textual analysis technique. Data were obtained through close reading and plot segmentation techniques to reveal the representation of the 5 core values contained in Circe's characterization. The results of the study showed that Circe represented the five values strongly: religious values were seen from Circe's recognition of divine power and her involvement in spiritual practices; independence values were reflected in Circe's independence in facing various challenges in her exile; cooperative values were seen in her cooperation with other characters in facing dangerous threats; and integrity values were seen in her honesty, life principles, and consistency of her actions. These findings indicate that the novel Circe can be used as reading material that can teach various good characters including the 5 core character education values through the characterization of the main character, Circe.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of lexical hedges by male and female characters in the animated film “Tinker Bell” (2008), focusing on differences in variation and communicative functions based on gender. The analysis employs Lakoff’s theory of women’s language and Holmes' framework of language functions. A qualitative descriptive method was used, with data collected through documentation and audio-visual observation from the film’s transcript. The results also indicate that although both genders employ lexical hedges, female characters tend to demonstrate a broader range of forms and functions. The findings highlight how hedges not only reflect gendered communication styles but also contribute to character development and narrative flow within the film. This study contributes to understanding gendered communication patterns in animated media and how they reflect broader sociolinguistic dynamics.

Abstract

Kadyatmikan, a core aspect of Balinese spiritual teachings, is a secondary modeling system that offers guidance toward spiritual balance and moksa (liberation) through practices such as self-control, meditation, and harmony with nature. This study investigates the meaning of Kadyatmikan in the Tutur Tegesing Wisik Warah text, through Yuri Lotman's (1990) cultural semiotics framework. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research identified and analyzed the symbolic elements and spiritual codes within the text. A heuristic reading method was applied to uncover surface-level meanings, such as narrative structures and linguistic features, and connotative reading to explore deeper symbolic and cultural interpretations. The analysis focused on the interaction of these elements with the Balinese cultural semiosphere. The findings highlight the symbolic relevance of teachings like Sad Ripu and Yoga (meditative practices), demonstrating their role in fostering self-realization and cultural identity. Discussion emphasizes the dual function of these teachings: preserving Balinese spiritual values and addressing contemporary challenges through cultural adaptability. The research contributes to empirical studies of cultural semiotics and conceptual explorations of traditional wisdom in modern contexts

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of information loss in the Indonesian-English translation of cultural terms in the Netflix series Gadis Kretek (Cigarette Girl), focusing on how key cultural nuances are reduced or omitted in the translation process. The study highlights the challenges faced when rendering culturally embedded into English, raising concerns about accuracy and cultural authenticity. This study used comprehensive semantic-componential analysis, guided by Larson’s Componential Analysis (1998) and Nida and Taber’s theory of Loss and Gain of Information (1982), applied specifically to Indonesian cultural contexts in audiovisual translation. Utilising qualitative methodologies, such as documentation, observation, and linguistic comparison, the study uncovers significant semantic reductions, including the omission of cultural values, historical context, and social connotations. The causes of these losses are considered to be primarily attributed to a lack of specificity in English, cultural and social gaps, and structural differences between the languages. In conclusion, the study emphasises the necessity for culturally sensitive translation strategies, with the core finding being that linguistic equivalence alone is insufficient to preserve cultural depth in cross-cultural translations.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the types of conflict in a short story called Christmas Every Day. This qualitative descriptive study utilized the library research method to collect data, which requires a process of reading books, journals, and other references to have a thorough understanding of the topic. In addition, note-taking technique was also utilized in the process of data collection. Afterward, the data was then evaluated using a conflict theory presented by Nurgiyantoro (2018). He proposed two types of conflict, internal conflict and external conflict. The findings of the study show some internal and external conflicts in the short story. One data was found to reflect internal conflict occurred and three data were classified as physical conflict undergone by the character in the short story. However, social conflict, which is a classification of external conflict, cannot be found in this short story.
