Abstract

The development of cocoa in Indonesia was followed by an increase in cocoa waste in the form of fruit skins as much as 75% of fruit skins. The purpose of this study was to determine the formulation of fungi (Trichoderma harzianum and Pleurotus ostreatus)and methods of composting cocoa fruit skin waste as well as analysis of the quality of the compost produced.  The research was conducted at Bontomanai village, Bungayya sub-district, and Gowa district which all have composting facilities on February to June 2023 . The quality testing of compost and counting the amount of Phytophtora palmivora spores in cocoa pod husk compost was carried out in the Plant Disease Laboratory, Department of Plant Pest and Disease, Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University. This study consisted of three activities, there were producing compost, checking the quality and maturity of the compost, and measuring the amount of P. palmivora spores in the cocoa pod husk compost. This study included six treatments, notably P0: without Bioactivator, open pile, P1: T. harzianum, open pile, P2: P. ostreatus, open pile, P3: T. harzianum + P. ostreatus, open pile, P4: T. harzianum + P. ostreatus, open pile P4: without Bioactivator, close pile, P5: T. harzianum, close pile, P6: P. ostreatus, close pile, P7: T. harzianum + P. ostreatus close pile. Based on the compost maturity test and nutritional content analysis of cocoa waste, it can be seen that the most effective treatment in composting cocoa pod shells was the T. harzianum + P. ostreatus in open pile treatment, the highest levels of P2O5 and K2O but lowest levels of C/N.  Composting process had also reduced the amount of P. palmivora in cocoa pod husk waste.

Abstract

Rice farming in Indonesia frequently faces pest issues, which are typically managed with chemical pesticides that can harm the environment and human health. As an alternative, training on the use of Beauveria bassiana as an environmentally friendly biopesticide was conducted to enhance farmers' knowledge and skills. The training was held in July 2024 with the Mangngu’rangi Farmer Group from Desa Manjapai, Kecamatan Bontonompo, Kabupaten Gowa, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Prior to the training, 95% of farmers were unfamiliar with B. bassiana, and 100% had not used it. The training methods included lectures, discussions, and hands-on demonstrations. Post-test results indicated that 98% of participants found the training material clear and felt prepared to apply this technology. The training is expected to strengthen farmers' ability to adopt biological control technologies, support agricultural sustainability, and contribute to achieving the SDGs in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Shallots have physiological and pharmacological effects on the human body and have been cultivated intensively using biocompost, which may be contaminated with heavy metals. Enrichment of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi in biocompost and the addition of biological organic fertilizer (BOF) to reduce the absorption of heavy metals in shallot bulbs is the main objective of this research. The study used a Randomized Block Design with five treatments, namely: shallots cultivation method by indigenous farmers/control(B0); Dose of biocompost enriched with AM fungi 100kg plot-1(B1); 200kg plot-1(B2); 100kg plot-1+BOF(B3); 200kg plot-1+BOF(B4), has been carried out in Enrekang district, South Sulawesi by observing the components of heavy metal content in plant organs and the level of infection of AM fungi in plant roots. Results showed that a dose of biocompost enriched with AM fungi 200 kg plot-1, and 100kg plot-1+BOF could increase Cr, Cu, and Pb accumulation in roots and leaf, as well as reduce metal accumulation in shallot bulbs, with level AM fungi infection classified as very high. The novelty of this study is that organic fertilizer enriched with AM fungi can reduce the absorption of heavy metals that accumulate in shallot bulbs and is essential information for farmers.

Abstract

Bacterial leaf blight (BLB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), is a major disease of rice. This study aimed to determine the Xoo pathotypes present in rice-growing areas of South Sulawesi and to evaluate the resistance of selected rice varieties. The research was conducted at the Agricultural Biotechnology Research and Development Center and the Plant Pests and Diseases Laboratory, Hasanuddin University, Makassar. Xoo isolates were cultured on Wakimoto medium and inoculated using the clipping method. Five differential varieties (Kinmaze, Wase Aikoku, Tetep, Java 14, and Kogyoku) were used to classify the pathotypes, while five commercial rice varieties (Inpari 6, Ciliwung, Ciherang, IR 64, and Pioneer) were tested for resistance. Six Xoo isolates were classified into pathotypes VI, VII, VIII, and XI, with pathotype VIII being the most dominant (33.3%). Inpari 6 and Ciliwung showed resistance to all tested pathotypes. Ciherang was resistant to most pathotypes but moderately susceptible to VIII. IR 64 and Pioneer displayed varying degrees of resistance and moderate resistance. These findings highlight the presence of diverse Xoo pathotypes and identify rice varieties with broad-spectrum resistance, providing valuable information for the development of BLB management strategies suited to specific regional conditions.

Abstract

Foot rot disease (FRD) on citrus plants is suspected to be caused by a Phytophthora spp., characterized by yellowish-brown stem discoloration and cracking or peeling bark. FRD spreads rapidly and can be fatal to citrus crops. The purpose of this study was to determine the intensity of FRD on pomelo (Citrus maxima) in Ma'rang, Segeri, and Labakkang Districts, Pangkep Regency. Symptomatic tissues were collected and examined microscopically at the Plant Disease Laboratory at Hasanuddin University. The highest disease intensity was observed in Ma'rang (27%), followed by Labakkang (21%) and Segeri (17%). The study also found that disease intensity was inversely related to light penetration under the canopy. Denser foliage with limited pruning resulted in lower light intensity and higher disease severity. The low intensity of light that enters under the trees canopy of pomelo plantations is affected by tree stands that have relatively denser crowns due to the infrequent pruning of less productive branches.
