Abstract

As time progresses, advancements in technology, information, and the economy have influenced lifestyle choices, one of which is the increasing preference for consuming junk food over home-cooked meals. Junk food is typically high in fat, and excessive fat intake can lead to hypercholesterolemia, which is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Mangrove (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza) contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties that have been reported to reduce total cholesterol levels. This study aims to investigate the effect of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza leaf extract as an anti-cholesterol agent in hypercholesterolemic male mice (Mus musculus). The research employed a true experimental method with a completely randomized design (CRD). Male mice were induced with a high-fat diet to develop hypercholesterolemia and were subsequently treated with different doses of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza leaf extract. Total cholesterol levels were measured before and after treatment. Data were analyzed using ANOVA followed by Duncan’s multiple range test. The results showed that the administration of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza leaf extract significantly reduced cholesterol levels, with the most effective dose being 500 mg/kg body weight, leading to a decrease of 91.4 mg/dL or 16.45%. These findings suggest that Bruguiera gymnorrhiza leaf extract has the potential to be developed as a natural anti-cholesterol agent. Further studies are recommended to explore its mechanism of action and its potential application in human health.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the lead (Pb) levels in fish for consumption on the East Pentadu Coast, Gorontalo Province, and to evaluate whether these levels were within the maximum limits according to the applicable quality standards. This study was conducted at three locations: the boat dock, the mangrove area, and the auction site. The method used in this study was a quantitative descriptive method using a purposive sampling technique. The population in this study included fish for consumption on the East Pentadu Coast, the muscles of which were collected at all three locations. The results showed that the highest lead levels in Cetoscarus ocellatus fish were 0.0003 mg/kg, far below the maximum limit of SNI 7387:2009, which is 0.1 mg/kg. Therefore, consumption of fish from the East Pentadu Coast is still considered safe, although the cumulative Pb properties still require vigilance.

Abstract

Adolescents are individuals undergoing significant development. The nutritional intake required by adolescents varies to achieve balanced nutrition, but if not met, it can lead to various health problems, such as anemia. Anemia is one of the health issues commonly experienced by adolescent girls, especially during puberty. Lack of knowledge and awareness about anemia prevention is a primary factor influencing adolescents' behavior in maintaining their health status. The utilization of engaging and interactive educational media, such as animated videos and digital literacy-based media (Canva), can be an effective strategy in improving anemia prevention behavior among adolescents. This study aims to determine the effect of anemia prevention education through a combination of animated video media and digital-based literacy media (Canva) on the behavior of adolescent girls at SMAN 1 Marisa. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest approach without a control group. The sample consisted of 196 adolescent girls from grades X and XI, selected using proportional random sampling technique. The instrument used was an anemia prevention behavior questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed a significant increase in anemia prevention behavior in the aspects of knowledge (p = 0.000), attitude (p = 0.000), and action (p = 0.000) after the educational intervention. The conclusion of this study states that anemia prevention education using a combination of animated videos and digital-based literacy media (Canva) has an impact on the behavior of adolescent girls at SMAN 1 Marisa, in terms of knowledge, attitudes, and actions. The use of engaging and easily accessible educational media can be an alternative in health promotion among adolescents.

Abstract

Teo tuber flour (Tacca leontopetaloides) is a local carbohydrate source with potential to be developed as a functional food. However, information about its starch composition and glycemic load is still limited, even though these two parameters are important in determining blood glucose response after consumption as well as the carbohydrate quality of a food. This study aims to determine the amylose and amylopectin content of teo tuber flour and evaluate its glycemic load using male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The study used a descriptive method with a quantitative approach and a laboratory experimental design. Analysis of amylose and amylopectin content was done using spectrophotometry with the DNS method and an amylose standard curve. Glycemic load was determined by measuring the rats’ blood glucose response after giving them teo tuber flour porridge and pure glucose, then calculated using the Incremental Area Under the Curve (iAUC) method. Research results show that teo yam flour contains 15.727% amylose and 64.389% amylopectin, meaning its starch composition is dominated by amylopectin. Rats fed with teo yam flour porridge showed lower and more stable blood glucose responses compared to rats given pure glucose. The glycemic load value of teo yam flour is 17, which falls into the medium category. These findings suggest that teo yam flour has the potential to be developed as a functional food that can help maintain stable blood glucose levels. Further research is needed to explore starch modification techniques that can reduce glycemic response and enhance its health benefits.

Abstract

Anemia is a condition when the hemoglobin (Hb) level in the blood is lower than the normal limit. Adolescent girls are at high risk of experiencing anemia due to regular blood loss during menstruation, and iron (Fe) deficiency is the main factor causing iron deficiency anemia, which is a condition resulting from insufficient iron for hemoglobin synthesis in erythrocytes that function to transport oxygen. The aim of this study is to determine the serum iron (Fe) levels and the number of erythrocytes in anemic adolescent girls who receive a free nutritious meal program. The research method used is an analytical observational approach with a cross-sectional design. The population in this study consisted of 80 anemic femal students, with a sample size of 40 anemic female students. The research results show that the iron levels in anemic adolescent girls who received the MBG program averaged 97.14 ± 91.67, and the average erythrocyte count was 4.87 ± 0.54. The results indicate that the average of both variables is still within the normal range. Meanwhile, the results in the group that has not received free nutrition show an average erythrocyte count of 4.73 ± 0.31, while the average iron level is at 47.50 ± 19.39.
