Abstract

Yambean mosaic virus is the most important virus infecting yam bean in Indonesia. The virus were transmitted either mechanically or via aphid.  This study to test the transmission efficiency of the virus via A. craccivora and A. gossypii by using different number of aphid such 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 for each treatment. To determine the transmission efficiency, incubation period, type of symptom and incidence were used as parameter. Transmission of virus by A. craccivora showed incidence range 90 to 100%, significant differences in incubation time of 1 aphid compared to other treatments and showed severe leaf mosaic, vein-banding and severe leaf malformation such as string. However, the incidence of transmission of virus by A. gossypii was range 70 to 100%, with longer incubation period in compare with A. craccivora. There was no significant differences of incubation period among treatments by A. gossypii. The infected plants showed leaf malformation, vein-banding, wrinkle and blotch on the leaves. Based on these, both aphids species could transmitted virus efficiently, and among them A. craccivora considerate has higher ability as efficient insect vector to transmit the virus in compare with A. gossypii.

Abstract

Abstract

Indicator Plant and PCR-RAPD for Biotype Determination of Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae).B. tabaci has been known world wide as a major pest and virus vector of horticulture. In Indonesia the presence of B.tabaci was reported since 1980 and its role as virus vector in tomato and chilli pepper has becoming more importantrecently. Genetic diversity of B. tabaci has been well recognized, but very little information available for diversity of B.tabaci in Indonesia. This research was conducted in Bogor, West Java from May 2004 to June 2005. The aim of thisresearch was to initiate basic information regarding genetic diversity of B. tabaci in Indonesia, particularly in Java Island.Whiteflies population collected from different crops, i.e. tomato, broccoli, chill pepper, eggplant, cucumber, soybean, andedamame, was evaluated using silverleaf-induction test, and RAPD-PCR. It was evidenced that only B. tabaci populationfrom broccoli was able to induce silverleaf. Two genetic types of B. tabaci, i.e. biotype B and non B, were identified basedon polymorphism character of DNA. Population from broccoli was belong to biotype B, whereas other populations fromtomato, chill pepper, eggplant, cucumber, soybean, and edamame were belong to biotype non B.

Abstract

Durian contributes a high economic value in agribusiness of horticultural product. However, recently the attack of scale insect has devastated most of pre-production trees in Indonesia. A research with objective to know the basic information about the correct species, distribution and population abundance was done at Aripan Research Station of Indonesian Tropical Fruits Research Institute from July to August 2018. A proper identification and observation method were used to know the species identity, distribution and abundance of the insect. Biotic and abiotic factors in each clone such as nutrients content, tree morphological characteristic, light intensity, temperature and relative humidity under canopy were analysed. The result showed that Aulacaspis vitis Green was a scale insect identified associating with durian leaves. Clone Bintana and Sikapal were the most and the less preferred with the intensity of damage was 88.60 % and 38.30 %, respectively. Nutrient content especially nitrogen and water as well as canopy morphology were simultaneously the most contributed in the preference of a certain clone. The pest was preferred to clump in the East cardinal direction and no significant difference between upper and lower part of the tree including within and outside of the canopy.

Abstract

Strawberry is a new crop in Indonesia, and it has been developed because of its high demands. Thrips is one of the strawberry pest that can reduce quality and quantity strawberry productions. The research was conducted in Alamendah-Rancabali Village, Bandung District from March to August 2012. Thrips species that attack strawberry in Alamendah Village dominated by Frankliniella intonsa (Trybom). Other thrips that were found on plants surround strawberry field is Thrips palmi and Microcephalothrips abdominalis. Both of these thrips are found on tomatoes, potatoes, leek, blackberries, weeds (Amaranthus sp. and Ageratum haustonianum). The complete stadia of F. intonsa were found on strawberry flowers. Population densities in the field were found to be between 1.8 to 2.3 individual/flower. Around 68.4%-82.2% of the fields are are infested with F. intonsa. Based on test of F. intonsa attack ability on strawberry plant, the result shows 43% of fruit that harvested is malformed on tips of fruits. Therefore, F. intonsa is potential to become a important pest of strawberry plant.

Abstract

One of the important pests on chilli plants is Thrips parvispinus Karny (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). The presence of the pest is detected ranging from lowlands to highlands. This study was aimed to find out the morphological diversity of T. parvispinus at three different altitudes which include Cirebon (< 30 m asl), Bogor (300 - 400 m asl), and Cianjur (> 1200 m asl). At each level of altitude, it was collected 60 female adults of the thrips and then they were preserved into microscope preparations using Hoyer medium. The observed morphological characters of T. parvispinus were the length of body, the width of head, the width of thorax, the length of wing, and the color of body. The difference in morphological characters of the thrips in all three levels of altitude were analyzed using analysis of variance and Duncan's multiple range test. The correlation between altitude and body color was analyzed using chi- square test. Results showed that the body length, thoracic width, and wing length of the highland thrips were longer than those of the mid and lowland thrips. The three morphological characters showed significant differences between the mid and lowlands and the highlands, except for the character of head width. Changes in the color of the head, thorax, and abdomen were correlated to the level of the altitude.

Abstract

Paracoccus marginatus Williams & Granara de Willink (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) is one of the papaya insect pests that causes  high economic loss. The major constraint in controling this pest with insecticides is the existence of wax layer covering the insect body. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of Piper retrofractum (Pr), Anonna squamosa (As), and Tephrosia vogelii (Tv) extracts as well as their mixtures to control P. marginatus imago in the laboratory. Pr, As, and Tv extracts were tested separately and in extract mixtures against female P. marginatus by direct spray on the insect.  Each treatment was observed at 24, 48, and 72 hours after treatment (HAT). Our result showed that at the LC95 – 72 HAT, Tv and As extracts were about three times more effective to P. marginatus than Pr extract. The effective concentration that causing around 95% mortality of P. marginatus are 1.250% (Tv), 1.482% (Pr), dan 0.469% (As). Extracts mixtures of Tv + As (2:1, w/w) and As + Ps (2 : 1, w/w) were about 1.67 times more effective than Tv + Pr (2:1, w/w) extracts mixtures. Based on combination index at 72 HST, extract mixtures of Tv + As and Tv + Pr had low sinergistic joint action, meanwhile As + Pr extract mixture had additive joint action. In addition, all the extracts treatments disturbed the formation of the wax coverings the eggs (egg sacs). Pr, As, and Tv extracts as well as their mixtures at certain extract comparison have the alternate potential to control the mealybug P. marginatus.

Abstract

Whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) can cause direct and indirect damages on plants, especially vegetables. There is only limited information regarding taxonomy and population dynamic of whiteflies attacking vegetables in Indonesia. This research is conducted to identify species of whitefly collected from chili pepper, tomato, and soybean, and to study their population dynamic. The information gathered from these studies will be useful to support whitefly management in the field. Based on morphology identification of the puparium collected directly from the host plants, there were four species of whitefly identified from chili pepper, tomato, and soybean in Bogor, Cianjur, and Sukabumi, i.e. Bemisia tabaci, Aleurodicus dispersus, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, and Dialeurodes sp. The presence of B. tabaci on chili pepper and tomato was associated with virus infection that causes yellowing and leaf curl disease. This population of B. tabaci tended to increase along with plant growth and generally reached the highest population when the plant was 60-70 days after planting.

Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a new pest in maize cropping inIndonesia. These insects originated in the Americas and have spread to several countries and causecrop loss in corn. Beginning in 2019, this pest has reportedly attacked corn plants in the Sumatraregion. This activity aims to find out the existence of S. frugiperda in the area of Petir Village,Dramaga Sub-District, Bogor District. The survey results show that S. frugiperda has attacked thecorn crop in Petir Village. Specific characters found in S. frugiperda are inverted "Y" in the headcapsule and a black dot pattern on the abdomen (point four and trapezoid). S. frugiperda larvae found in the village of Petir attack the corn growing point, but the population is still low. Entropathogenicfungi are bioinsecticides that can be used to control pests. Metarizhium rileyi is an entomopathogenicfungus that has the potential to control S. frugiperda in maize. The results indicated that M. rileyi waseasily propagated en masse in agar medium and in good virulence in S. frugiperda.
