Abstract

The exploitation of nature has led to an ecological crisis that is not only a local threat but has expanded as a global catastrophe. Literature represents the degradation of nature as well as the power relations among the oligarchic networks operating around it to build ecological awareness for the community. This descriptive-qualitative research design aims to describe the form of ecological degradation and the role of oligarchic power networks that appear in Indonesian novels. The data sources were purposively selected from Indonesian novels with ecoliteracy insights, including Api Awan Asap by Korrie Layun Rampan (2015), Jemangilak Tak Pernah Menangis by Martin Aleida (2004), and Kelomang by Qizink La Aziva (2016). In addition, data sources related to nature and the environment depicted in the three novels were also used. The data were obtained using reading and note-taking techniques. Furthermore, it was analyzed qualitatively using the perspective of literary ecology through categorization, tabulation, and inference. The results of this study concluded that (1) the forms of ecological damage presented in Indonesian novels are (a) river sedimentation and pollution, (b) coastal abrasion, and (c) forest fires. (2) Forms of natural damage occur due to exploitation actions carried out by oligarchic networks supported by government regulations and licenses. The study of ecological literary works builds awareness of the process of ecological degradation and the perpetrators of destruction that form a systemic network.

Abstract

This study explores the use of irony, parody, and pastiche in Sutardji Calzoum Bachri's poem Tanah Air Mata through a postmodernist lens. This research is motivated by the fact that literary works play a role in conveying deep meanings and criticisms. Sutardji, a renowned contemporary Indonesian poet, often addresses profound themes such as social injustice. This research aims to comprehensively analyze how postmodern elements are employed in the poem to critique social and political issues. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study involves textual analysis of the poem and secondary sources. The findings reveal that irony, the most dominant element in this poem, underscores the disparity between hope and reality in the form of suffering society feels amidst Indonesia's prosperity. Parody imitates the dominant narrative in Indonesia’s national anthem lyric, and pastiche blends traditional and modern elements to create layered meanings. Moreover, intertextuality is used to analyze these elements, linking the poetic text to grand narratives and other cultural symbols, creating a dialogue that enriches meaning and inspires readers to look critically at social reality. This approach enriches the understanding of a poem entitled Tanah Air Mata and demonstrates the power of postmodern aesthetics in contemporary poetry to highlight and critique social injustices.

Anthropocentrism is one of the perspectives applied in figuring out human relations with the environment. The environmental crisis happening in most areas of the world lately is allegedly the impact of anthropocentrism, which views humans as the center of the universe, and only humans have the right to utilize and make use of nature for their interests and needs. One of the environmental crises which hit the world today is deforestation. This study aims at examining the issue of deforestation described in Indonesian and Malaysian novels. The method applied is a comparative qualitative descriptive with an ecocritical perspective. As data sources, two Indonesian novels and two Malaysian novels were selected, namely Api Awan Asap (Rampan) and Tanah Tabu (Thayf) as the samples of Indonesian novels; Penunggu Rimba: Tombiruo (Mursid) and Anak Belantara (Abdullah) as the samples of Malaysian novels. From an eco-critical perspective, the results of the study show that in the four novels studied, it appears that there is an issue of deforestation in Indonesia and Malaysia which has resulted in various other environmental problems. The four analyzed novels reveal how local wisdom can prevent and fight deforestation which occurs in the forests of Kalimantan and Papua. Added to this, through the novels, Indonesian and Malaysian writers both present ecocentrism perspectives to fight anthropocentrism which causes deforestation. Some different views are expressed by Indonesian and Malaysian writers in dealing with deforestation.
