Abstract

Abstract

This study was aimed to evaluate the utilization of jack bean meal as a substitution of soybean meal in the diets and the effect on broiler performance. A total number of two hundred Lohmann MB 202 Platinum broiler chickens were kept in five weeks rearing period, consisted of three weeks of starter phase (0-3 weeks) and two weeks of finisher phase (3-5 weeks). This study used a completely randomized design with four treatments and five replicates. The dietary treatments were: JB0-0 (control ration: basal diet without jack bean meal substitution in starter and in finisher phase), JB50-0 (basal diet with jack bean meal substitution in starter phase only), JB50-50 (basal diet with jack  bean meal substitution in starter and in finisher phase), JB0-50 (basal diet with jack  bean meal substitution in the finisher phase only). The data obtained were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance and followed with Duncan's multiple-range test for the data with significant difference. The variables measured were: growth performance, carcase yield, visceral organ weight and immune organ. Results showed that the dietary treatment had no effect on performance, carcass yield and commercial cut, visceral organ or immune organs of 35 days old broiler chickens, except for the thymus (P<0.05). It can be concluded that as a source of protein, soybean meal can be replaced by jack bean meal up to 50%.  Jack bean meal can be given either in starter phase only, in finisher phase only, or in both starter and in finisher phase.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of Black soldier fly (BSF) larva extract. The BSF larva was extracted using methanol and then tested for antibacterial activity using agar diffusion method (zone growth inhibition). The antibacterial activity was conducted against Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli, two important bacterial strains in poultry, using six dilution levels (10 mg/ml, 20 mg/ml, 40 mg/ml, 80 mg/ml, 160 mg/ml and 320 mg/ml). All the results were subjected analyze using t-test method. Based on the diameter of the inhibition zone, the BSF larva extract has a strong (P<0.05) antibacterial activity against Salmonella sp. and E. coli when the concentration used 320 mg/ml. In addition, BSF larva extract also contain high amount of lauric acid (49.18%), a saturated fatty acid that has been proven to proposes as antibacterial agent. Therefore, it could be concluded that the BSF larva extract could be used as a candidate for antibacterial substances.

Abstract

Heat stress in the poor transportation systems will impact the oxidative stress, affecting the quality of chicken meat. The decrease in heat stress levels can be trigerred through antioxidants, one of which is ZnSO4 antioxidants, before cutting. This study aimed to examine the reduction of post-transport stress on the performance of chickens, carcasses, and the physical and chemical qualities of broiler meat treated with ZnSO4. The total broiler chickens transported were 324 roosters aged 4 weeks (with 3 replicates each). All of the transported chickens were treated with ZnSO4 at doses of 0, 80, and 160 ppm for 7 days. Next, the chickens were transported with a travel time of 1, 2, and 3 hours. The breast meats were taken (filet) to be used as research samples. A factorial randomized block design was used as the research design and the data were analyzed using ANOVA (analysis of variance). The results showed that there was no correlation between travel time and the ZnSO4 levels on broiler chicken performance (weight and carcass loss) and physicochemical quality of broiler meat (pH value, percentage of water lost, aw, cooking loss, glycogen content and MDA). Longer travel time significantly reduced live weight, carcass percentage, pH value, glycogen content, while increasing the MDA levels. The addition of ZnSO4 can significantly increase the pH value of breast meat, maintain high glycogen levels, increase carcass percentage, and inhibit MDA formation.

Abstract

The achievement of this study was to evaluate the use of jack bean seed and protease enzymes in different protein levels in the Broiler ration on performance and metabolizable energy. Two hundred and forty broilers were distributed into 3 object factors and 3 replications. The first factor was the difference of the ingredients (soybean meal-based basal ration and jack bean seed-contained rations), the second factor was the level of protein (22% and 19.5%) and the third factor was the enzyme treatment (without enzymes and with the inclusion of the proteases). A total of 2 birds from each treatment were assigned as a sample for metabolizable energy assay. The experimental design used was a factorial completely randomized design (FCRD). The data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results showed that adding jack bean seed into the Broiler starter’s ration significantly (P <0.01) decreased the body weight gain (BWG) but it could be improved with the inclusion of protease enzyme. The metabolizable energy of the ration containing jack bean seed was significantly higher (P<0.01) than in the basal ration. The use of a low protein level ration (19.5%) significantly (P <0.01) showed the decrease in BWG, decrease in true metabolizable energy, and true corrected-nitrogen metabolizable energy but could be improved with the addition of protease enzyme. The use of the protease enzyme could improve the performance of broiler chickens fed with a low protein ration that contained Jack bean seed (Canavalia ensiformis).

Abstract

Objective: This study evaluated the use of jack beans (Canavalia ensiformis) and protease enzymes in broiler chicken feed. The protein levels on carcasses and the efficiency of the diet were assessed based on protein efficiency ratio, nitrogen retention, percentage of immunity organs, and feed economic analysis based on Income Overfeed Conversion. Methods: The factorial complete randomized design (CRD) was employed in this study, piloting three treatment factors: protein level (22% and 19.5%), protein source material (basal diet and jack bean), and the use of enzymes (without enzymes and protease supplementation). Moreover, three replications were conducted, consisting of two samples of broiler chickens per replication. Forty-eight male broiler chickens from 240 populations that had previously been reared for 28 days were taken as the sample of the study.Result: The results showed that the use of jack beans significantly decreased the dress body weight (P<0.05), undress body weight, and carcass weight of broiler chickens. In addition, the weight significantly increased IOFC by (P<0.01). The use of protease enzymes significantly (P<0.05) increased Retention Nitrogen, Protein Eficiency Ratio, and carcass. The feed protein level decreased substantially by (P<0.01). It reduced protein consumption, RN, PER, dress, undress, and carcass body weight. The use of jack bean did not affect the broiler's immune organ size. Conclusion: The use of protease enzymes in diets with low protein levels can produce dress body weight, carcass body weight, RN, and PER, similar to basal diets, without affecting the size of the immune organs of broiler chickens.
