Abstract

Abstract

Energy inefficiency due to Air Conditioners (AC) running in empty rooms contribute to unnecessary energy consumption and increased CO₂ emissions. This study explores how different depth levels of the YOLOv8 architecture and dropout regularization can enhance human density detection for smarter AC control systems. By evaluating model accuracy through Mean Average Precision (mAP50-95), we provide quantitative insights into how these modifications improve detection performance. Our dataset consists of 1363 images taken in an office environment at ITERA under varying lighting conditions and different human presence densities. The results show that the YOLOv8m model performs best, achieving an mAP50-95 score of 0.814 in training and 0.813 in validation, outperforming other YOLOv8 variants. Furthermore, applying dropout regularization improves model generalization, increasing mAP50-95 from 0.552 to 0.6 and effectively reducing overfitting. This study highlights the balance between architectural depth and dropout regularization in YOLOv8, demonstrating its effectiveness in energy-efficient smart buildings. The findings support the potential of deep learning-based human density detection in improving energy conservation strategies, making it a valuable solution for intelligent automation systems.

Abstract

Pests in sugarcane plantations are a major cause of damage, which could lead to severe damage to the crop, reduction of sugar quality, and significant economic loss. One of the major pests known in sugarcane plantations is stem borer (Chilo sacchriphagus), which attacks the canes. Two primary parasitoids, Trichogramma chilonis, which predates the stem borer eggs, and the Jatiroto fly (Diatraeophaga striatalis), which predates the stem borer larvae, are discussed here. This paper presents a time-dependent ten-dimensional dynamical mathematical model consisting of four-stage stem borer compartments, three-stage Trichogramma compartments, and three-stage Jatiroto compartments. Simulations are presented to describe the phenomenon of Trichogramma predation, Jatiroto predation, and simultaneous predation of both predators. It is shown that the release rate of each predator and a combined release of two predators can significantly reduce the infestation levels to a tolerable level for sugarcane production. The oscillatory dynamics of the stem borers and the Jatiroto flies affected the release timing strategy based on the level of infestation in the field. The results are expected to help us better understand the predator-prey phenomenon in the field and improve the forecasting of infestations in the field.

Abstract

Biodiesel is produced from synthetic ester compounds of vegetable and animal oils through a process of refining, bleaching, degumming, transesterification, and esterification. The quality and characteristics of the fuel are greatly influenced by the storage. The purpose of this research is to determine and analyze the effect of storage conditions on the physical and chemical changes of biodiesel (B100), biodiesel blend (B40), and petro diesel (B0). Experiment was conducted by storage fuels using glass bottle for 35 days arranged into four conditions based on cap and wrapping using aluminum foil, namely P1 (with cap, with wrapping), P2 (with cap, no wrapping), P3 (no cap, with wrapping), and P4 (no cap, no wrapping). Results showed that fuel quality decreases due to storage indicated by an increase in water content, density, acid number, and color parameters, as well as a decrease in the specific calorific value of all fuels. The condition of the storage container affected the changes the quality parameters. Based on its impact on fuel quality decline, the order of storage container conditions from the best is P1 (with cap, with wrap) > P2 (with cap, no wrap) > P3 (no cap, with wrap) > P4 (no cap, no wrap). Keywords: Biodiesel, Biodiesel blend (B40), Diesel fuel, Stability, Storage time.

Abstract

Wood furniture workers often face ergonomic challenges in their daily work activities, which involve manual tasks such as lifting, cutting, and assembling wooden components. These activities have the potential to cause musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which are disorders of the musculoskeletal system. MSDs can cause muscle pain, physical fatigue, and reduced work productivity in the long term if not properly addressed. This study aims to analyze the work posture risks of furniture workers using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method, designed to evaluate overall body posture during work activities. Data collection was conducted through direct observation on-site and video recording during the work process. This visual data was then analyzed using CorelDraw software to measure the workers' body posture angles, which were subsequently used to determine the REBA score for each work activity. The analysis results showed that out of the five main stages in the furniture production process, four of them had moderate to high ergonomic risk levels. The most risky stages are during wood cutting and assembly, where workers tend to bend or lift loads in an unideal position. Based on these results, the study recommends several improvement measures, including the use of lifting aids, adjusting the height of workbenches to match workers' body postures, and scheduling regular rest breaks. These steps are expected to reduce the risk of injuries caused by non-ergonomic work postures and improve the comfort and efficiency of furniture workers.
