Abstract

This research raises the deconstruction of patriarchal power over women, social, race and education in the novels. The researcher examines this matter with the aims of uncovering and describing gender issues in this study based on the existence of women who feel oppressed trying to fight for their rights. In this study, the researcher compares the same situation between the two main characters in these two novels which is described using a qualitative descriptive method. The data sources in this research are the novels Bekisar Merah and The Color Purple. The data were obtained by reading, taking notes, and coded each sentence related to the research data. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses the Feminist Intersectional theory to examine in depth the oppression of women from all aspects. The results of this study indicate that there is discrimination experienced by the two main characters in the novel, discrimination in terms of gender, family, society, race and education. Marginalization is also felt by these two characters due to differences in Gender, Race, and Family backgrounds that give rise to marginalization, the existence of dominance from the other party towards one of the sexes can be marginalized, in addition, the injustice has to do with the subordination, stereotypes, and violence experienced by the female characters in the novel. However, the form of gender equality in this case is the need for mutual respect between men and women, women as equal partners of men are more precisely as mentors and equal partners.

Abstract

The Minahasan community of North Sulawesi, Indonesia has witnessed a significant shift in women's roles and empowerment in recent years. This study examined the economic and social/political empowerment of Minahasan women, including their participation in income-generating activities, entrepreneurship, community leadership, and advocacy for rights and representation. However, this empowerment has also brought about challenges as Minahasan women grapple with the double burden of balancing their newly acquired roles with traditional domestic responsibilities of childcare and household duties. Through a comprehensive library research approach, this study analyzed the tensions and role conflicts experienced by Minahasan women as they navigated the contrasting societal expectations. Key findings revealed the strain on family dynamics, potential neglect of children's upbringing, and marital relationship challenges arising from the double burden. The study also identified strategies and best practices for reconciling these contrasting roles, such as promoting equitable domestic workload sharing, establishing childcare support systems, advocating for flexible work arrangements, and fostering societal attitude changes towards gender norms. Ultimately, this research highlights the importance of addressing the double burden challenges faced by Minahasan women to ensure their empowerment is sustainable and does not come at the cost of sacrificing traditional caregiving responsibilities or family well-being.

Abstract

Redemption at Hacksaw Ridge was written by Booton Herndon. The book, which is based on the true story of American Army medic Desmond Doss during World War II, emphasizes Doss' strong moral principles, which prevented him from carrying a weapon or taking part in acts of violence. This study intends to examine the deontological ethics embodied by Doss in the book, emphasizing his moral commitments, ethically grounded decision-making, and the consequences of his actions during the conflict. Sigmund Freud's psychological theory and a qualitative approach are used in the study to pinpoint three important subtopics in Doss's character: morality, duty, and human rights. The results highlight Doss's steadfast adherence to his moral principles and personal religion despite strong peer pressure. As he carried out his front-line medic duties, he never wavered from his non-violent principles. According to the research, Desmond Doss's story from Redemption at Hacksaw Ridge offers a compelling illustration of upholding moral principles in the face of adversity. It highlights the significance of keeping moral standards in place even in the face of strong opposition, demonstrating that morality and bravery can coexist in the real world.
