Abstract

Abstrak. This research is aimed at analyzing the Character and Setting in the Novel “About You” by Tere Liye. The method used in this research is content analysis which is to describe the Character and Setting in the novel. Data are obtained, analyzed and described based on the sentences in the novel; The Character divided into 2 types they are personal character and the attitude of personal. Setting shows the highest percentage 130 or 86%, while Character shows 22 or 14%. Character shows the highest percentage is caused by the complex sentences mostly describe someone or things in mostly sentences in the novel. Meanwhile, character in time shows 154 or 63%, setting 46 or 19%, reason 35 or 14%, condition 6 or 2%, and concession 4 2%. Antagonist and protagonist in time shows the highest percentage caused by most sentences tell about the time in almost every page. The highest percentage for the character is protagonist. Because Sri is the central for all of everything and she is a woman who has many things that should be kept. She has to keep all of assets that he has. The highest percentage in this setting is respect. Why? Because Sri and Zaman Zulkarnain are main character by every place and they are very humble for all of people around of them.Key words : Character and setting in the novel. protagonist, antagonist, flat.

Abstract

The present study investigates the representation of Indonesian millennials in the 2019presidential election in the mass media. How the media portray the millennials in news media becomes the purpose of this research. Qualitative research is employed to analyze the data. The data itself is taken from a news article from the Jakarta Post, “Millennials could be key to the election if they vote.” The tool used to analyze the written text is the critical analysis discourse proposed by Van Dijk (2011) and Fairclough (2005). It is found that millennials in the news article view millennials as an object. Their roles have not been explored deeply to see their potential in developing better political life. Millennials are urgently needed only for the sake of their voices and votes not their contribution to the politic itself.

Abstract

This research is to analyze deixis and speech act on presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The research data is the final presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden on 20th October 2020. The research is qualitative research. Data are taken from the video downloaded from www. Youtube.com. The video is then transcribed and analyzed. The main research instrument is the researcher himself. Deixis found in this research are person deixis (74,88%), spatial deixis (5,55%), temporal deixis (2,19%), social deixis (13,55%), and discourse deixis (3,84%). The context in which deixis used are person deixis in which deictic expression indicates person reference, as first person, second person and third person. Then spatial deixis is in context that deictic expression indicates proximal place and distal place. Temporal deixis in in context in which deictic expression indicates time point. Social deixis is used in context to indicates the social rank of reference. Meanwhile, discourse deixis is used to refer to portion of unfolding discourse in which utterance is located. Speech acts found in the research are assertive (59,54%), directive (11,45%), commissive (16,79%), and expressive (12,21%). The kind of assertive found are informing, convincing, stating, claiming. The kind of directive consist of requesting, suggesting, and ordering. The kind of commissive consist of threatening and promising. The kind of expressive consist of greeting, apologizing, thanking, and surprising. The possible perlocutionary act found is that assertive, which are informing, convincing, and claiming, is Trump and Biden want to inform some facts related to the issues being discussed. Further they want to convince the voters to vote one of them to be next president of the United States of America. Claiming acts is to show about what Trump and Biden have done for America. Each of them claims that he is the better person for the next president. Commissive also is dominant illocutionary acts, particularly promising acts. This is because they are debating for the president.

Abstract

This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe the representation of a dystopian society and its structure in the novel The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. The aims of this study are (1) to describe a dystopian society that has to adapt to living underground city in the novel The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau and (2) to describe the social structure of a dystopian society in the novel The City of Ember. The Structuralism approach is used as the theory approach by focusing on three aspects from Tzvetan Todorov: syntactic aspect, semantic aspect, and verbal aspect. The first data is taken from the novel The City of Ember and the second sources are taken from other supporting books, journals, and articles.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to determine: (1) The type of code-switching and code-mixing used, (2) The function of code-switching and code-mixing used by teachers and students, (3) The reason teachers and students use code-switching and code-mixing. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection in this study was carried out by observation, questionnaire, and interview and then analyzed and describing the results. The results show: (1) The types of code-switching and code-mixing often used are the type of intrasentential code-switching is 50.7%. Furthermore, the type of code-mixing alternation is 46.2%. (2) The code-switching and code-mixing functions used by teachers and students are as easy communication as is 42.5%. (3) Teachers and students use code-switching and code-mixing to facilitate communication in class and understand the material presented by the teacher.Keywords: Code Switching, Code Mixing, EFL Class.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to find out the usage of coherence and cohesion on the Students’ Descriptive Texts, especially in ten grader students at state senior high school in Cirebon. This study adopted thematic progression analysis to explore coherence in the students’ Descriptive text. This study was a qualitative study that used content analysis. The technique of collecting data was documentation from 46 students writing descriptive texts. The procedures were firstly collecting data, analyzing data, presenting data, and concluding the result of the study. Based on the analyzed data,1) 46 students’ writing descriptive text had grown the writing as the series of the stage in the descriptive text, using Identification and Description. Then, in analyzing coherence 2) 76% students got the coherence level is good, there are 19% in Fair, there are 2% in Less and 3% in Poor and in analyzing cohesion 3) there are 1052 cohesion markers that consist of 852 findings markers of grammatical cohesion (596 findings markers reference and 256 markers conjunction) and 200 markers of lexical cohesion (200 markers repetition).Keywords: series of stage, coherence, cohesion

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe the problems in the patriarchal society and prove the optimistic realism contained in the novel “A Golden Web” by Barbara Quick and how female characters were portrayed in the 18th century. The method to analyze the novel is content analysis and literature review from books and theories related to the novel and historical records. Using a new criticism approach, this paper examines the intrinsic elements of the story. The writer studies the elements through characters and characterizations using descriptive-analytical structures. The paper ends with descriptions of character and characterization, optimism realism, and how female characters in the 18th-century novel’ contained can be revealed.Keywords: realism; patriarchy; optimism; new criticism

Abstract

Kepercayaan diri merupakan aspek penting dalam mengembangkan keterampilan dan kualitas manusia. Mahasiswa dihadapkan dengan berbagai permasalahan dalam pembelajaran dan sudah seharusnya memiliki rasa percaya diri yang tinggi untuk mencapai pembelajaran yang optimal sesuai dengan tujuan. Maka perlunya kajian strategi pembelajaran yang dapat meningkatkan kepercayaan diri dalam belajar mahasiswa. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh strategi self regulated learning berbasis blended learning terhadap kepercayaan diri dalam pembelajaran permainan tenis meja. Metode yang digunakan quasi eksperimental design dengan nonequivalent control group design. Populasi dalam penelitian ini mahasiswa program studi Pendidikan Jasmani Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia angkatan 2017. Sampel yang digunakan adalah 26 mahasiswa yang mengontrak perkuliahan pembelajaran permainan tenis meja. Dalam pengambilan sampel peneliti menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Penelitian ini menggunakan instrumen berupa kuesioner kepercayaan diri. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai sig. sebesar 0,021 kurang dari taraf signifikansi α sebesar 0,05. Disimpulkan bahwa strategi self-regulated learning berbasis blended learning memiliki pengaruh terhadap peningkatan kepercayaan diri mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran permainan tenis meja

Abstract

Abstract. This study describes a theme of dysfunctional family, toxic parenting style, and main character’sdevelopment in The Kid novel by investigating the representation of dysfunctional family and toxic parenting style. This study also reveals how the protagonist copes with the problems caused by dysfunctional family and toxic parenting style in terms of character development. The research applies semiotic analysis of Saussure and structural approach (Todorov, 1985) requiring the study to focus on syntax, semantic and verbal aspect. As a result, the novel represents dysfunctional family in the way that it is chaotic based on Hunt's perpsective (2014) and toxic parenting style (Buck & Forward, 2002). Moreover, the main character Kevin Lewis deals with the toxic parents and develops as a child to adult character. The parents hurt the child in the way that they are toxic instead of caring with proper nurture. The toxic parents are inadequate to support the family, controlling towards Kevin, physically and verbally abusive. Kevin Lewis has some psychological issues as the effect of having toxic parents; struggling, anxious, stress, traumatic, low self-esteem, unhappy, bulimic and suicidal. He wants to be better, and he struggles to change. He can cope with the issues in the way that he is thoughtful, finance-oriented, sympathetic and empathetic. Moreover, he is able to deal with his bulimia well. Penelitian ini mendeskripsikan tema keluarga disfungsional, pola asuh orang tua yang kurang baik, dan perkembangan tokoh utama dalam novel The Kid dengan menyelidiki representasi keluarga disfungsional dan pola orang tua asuh yang kurang baik. Penelitian ini juga mengungkapkan bagaimana tokoh utama mengatasi masalah yang disebabkan oleh disfungsi keluarga dan pola orang tua asuh yang kurang baik dalam hal perkembangan karakter. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis semiotik Saussure dan pendekatan structural (Todorov, 1985) pada aspek sintaksis, semantik, dan verbal. Penelitian ini menyelidiki lingkungan rumah tangga dari keluarga disfungsional yang kacau berdasarkan teori dari Hunt (2014), pola asuh yang kurang baik (Buck & Forward, 2002), bagaimana karakter utama Kevin Lewis menghadapi orang tua dengan pola asuh sedemikian rupa dan tokoh utama berkembang hingga dewasa. Orang tuanya menyakiti Kevin Lewis dengan pola asuh yang kurang tepat tepat. Orang tuanya dengan pola asuh seperti kurang mampu menghidupi keluarga, terlalu mengendalikan Kevin, kasar secara fisik dan verbal. Kevin Lewis memiliki beberapa masalah psikologis akibat memiliki orang tua dengan pola asuh tersebut; ia bersusah payah, cemas, stres, traumatis, harga diri yang rendah, tidak bahagia, bulimia dan ingin bunuh diri. Dia ingin menjadi lebih baik, dan dia berjuang untuk berubah. Dia dapat mengatasi permasalahan dengan menjadi bijaksana, berorientasi keuangan, simpatik dan empati. Apalagi ia mampu mengatasi bulimia yang dideritanya dengan baik. Pada akhirnya, dia juga bahagia dan menjadi orang tua yang fungsional.Kata kunci: analisis semiotik; disfungsi keluarga; pendekatan struktural; pola asuh yang kurang baik, perkembangan karakter

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh metode pembelajaran circuit learning dan pwnguasaan dikisi terhadap kemampuan menulis puisi.  Pada penelitian ini akan memfokuskan seberapa pengaruhnya metede pembelajaran circuit learning berbantu media video animasi dan seberapa berpengaruhnya penguasaan diksi terhadap kemampuan menulis puisi. Merode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode Quasi eksperimen dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Penelitian dilaksanakan di SMA AL Binaa IBS, SMA Bina Negara, dan SMA Tunas Bangsa di Kabupaten Bekasi. Sampel dalam penelitian inimenggunakan random samp;ong. Pengujian hipotesis dengan ANOVA 2  arah. Hasil penelitian menunujukan bahwa tidak ada pengaruh yang signifikan penggunaan metode pembelajaran circuit learning berbantu media video animasi terhadap kemampuan menulis puisi, terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penguasaan diksi terhadap kemampuan menulis puisi, serta jikalau metode circuit learning berbantu media video animasi di terapkan kepada siswa yang mempunyai penguasaan diksi yang tinggi, maka metode circuit learning akan berpengaruh terhadap kemampuan menulis anak.
