Abstract

Self-medication with antibiotics elevates the threat of resistance, which increases morbidity and mortality. Antibiotic resistance (AMR) in humans must be avoided and reduced. The objective of this community service was to educate housewives about the crucial role of restricting self-medication with antibiotics in the fight against AMR. On March 14, 2023, the Department of Pharmacy at Bali International University executed this community service. The health education intervention was carried out in Banjar Pinda, Gianyar Regency. At least 79 housewives were attending. The event went well, and participants interacted with the presenters enthusiastically. It is implied that community service in Banjar Pinda-Gianyar imparts knowledge about health and the importance of AMR awareness. This program should be expanded to involve other community groups such as craftsmen, the elderly, and young people.

Abstract

Abstract

Pharmaceutical Care (PC) is a kind of interactive comprehensive service offered by the pharmacist to the patient, in which the pharmacist's physical presence is expected when providing pharmaceutical services to the patients at the pharmacy. However, pharmacists still prioritized internal management over interacting directly with patients. The objective of this research is to glance at the legal challenges of PC implementation in Indonesian community pharmacies. The normative juridical research method has been used, with a conceptual and legal approach. PC implementation in community pharmacies experiences major-level, mid-level, and minor-level challenges. PC standards in pharmacies are legally stated in Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia No. 73 of 2016, but there are still conflicts between pharmaceutical management and PC implementation. In the incident of a medication error, the pharmacist as the person responsible for PC in the pharmacy, is legally responsible. Pharmacists who do not meet PC standards in community pharmacies encounter administrative, civil, and criminal consequences.

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a major public health challenge, driven in part by inappropriate antibiotic use and limited public understanding of antibiotics and AMR. Early educational interventions for school-aged children may offer a sustainable approach to strengthening antibiotic literacy and promoting responsible health behaviors. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a flipchart-based educational intervention in improving elementary school students’ knowledge of antibiotics and understanding of AMR in a rural area of Bali, Indonesia. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted among 76 students using a validated questionnaire covering basic antibiotic concepts, AMR mechanisms, and prevention strategies. The proportion of students categorized as having high knowledge increased from 19.7% (95% CI: 11.8–27.8) before the intervention to 63.8% (95% CI: 53.9–75.3) after the intervention, while the proportion with low knowledge decreased from 21.1% to 10.5%. Mean knowledge scores increased significantly from 58.82 ± 16.57 to 75.13 ± 18.00, with a mean difference of +16.32 (95% CI: 12.55–20.08; p 0.001). The intervention also demonstrated a large practical effect (Cohen’s d = 0.99). These findings indicate that flipchart-based education can effectively improve antibiotic knowledge and AMR understanding among rural elementary school students and may serve as a promising school-based health education approach to support early antibiotic literacy.

Abstract

The digitalization of education is reshaping pharmacy instruction through the integration of online learning systems. While the adoption of digital learning continues to grow, research on the perceptions, readiness, and challenges faced by students and faculty in Indonesia remains limited. Understanding these factors is essential for formulating effective strategies in online education. This study investigates the perceptions, readiness, and obstacles encountered by pharmacy students and faculty at Bali International University in relation to online education. It further explores barriers to digital learning and their impact on development needs. Employing a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, the study first gathered quantitative data, followed by qualitative insights through in-depth interviews. A total of 329 respondents participated in the research. The quantitative results revealed no significant association between readiness (OR = 0.957, 95% CI = 0.869–1.055, p = 0.399) or attitude (OR = 1.059, 95% CI = 0.929–1.207, p = 0.364) and development needs. However, barriers showed a statistically significant correlation with development (OR = 1.777, 95% CI = 1.066–2.964, p = 0.027). Qualitative data, analyzed using a thematic framework, identified five central themes: accessibility, collaboration, ICT utilization, professional development, and the broader implications of digitalization in pharmacy education. This study underscores the transformative potential of digital technology and the importance of addressing existing challenges to enhance the quality and accessibility of pharmacy education. These improvements are vital to equipping future pharmacists with the competencies required to thrive in global healthcare systems and effectively contribute to integrated pharmacy services worldwide.
