Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common disease of aging characterized by increased extracellular deposits of amyloid-β (Aβ) in the brain. Globally, the number of people affected by AD has increased from 35.6 million in 2010 to 46.8 million in 2015. Ajwa dates contain phenolic compounds that can protect against inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the dose and duration of Ajwa date extract administration on IL-6 levels and SOD activity in rats induced with 400 mg/day homocysteine to trigger Alzheimer's Disease. This was a laboratory experimental study with a pretest-posttest group design conducted at the Laboratory of the Center for Food and Nutrition Studies (PSPG), Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia from December 2020 - January 2021. A total of 48 rats were divided into one control group, one untreated group, and 4 treatment groups that received different doses of Ajwa Date Extract (ADE) for 21 and 28 days in rats. The results showed that the administration of ADE (Ajwa date extract) for 21 and 28 days could reduce IL-6 levels but did not have the same effectiveness as donepezil. The administration of 800 mg/kg BW ADE for 28 days can increase SOD activities with the same effectiveness as donepezil. Ajwa date extract can be proven to have beneficial effects to prevent Alzheimer's disease and can be used to prevent decreased antioxidant and increased inflammation. Thus, further studies to explore the potential clinical use of the extract to manage Alzheimer's Disease may be beneficial.

Abstract

The prevalence of people with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2) with dyslipidemia complications continues to increase. Hyperglycemia that occurs in DMT2 patients can cause oxidative stress that disrupts lipid metabolism. Combination of kelor and mengkudu powder has the potential to help lower blood glucose in T2DM with dyslipidemia because it contains flavonoids that can prevent oxidative stress and fiber that can slow the absorption of blood glucose. This study aims to determine the effect of giving a combination of kelor and mengkudu powder on changes in GDP levels in T2DM with dyslipidemia. This type of research is true-experimental with pretest-posttest with control group design. This study used 30 male Wistar rats aged 2-3 months, weighing 150-250 grams. The rats were divided into 6 groups, KN normal conditioned rats, K- T2DM rats without treatment, K+ T2DM rats given the drug atorvastatin and groups P1, P2, P3, T2DM rats given a combination powder of 600 mg/200 gBB /day in the ratio of P1 (0.5: 1.5), P2 (1: 1) and P3 (1.5: 0.5) for 14 days. GDP levels were examined using the GOD-PAP method, data analysis using the Wilcoxon test. After 14 days of intervention, the P2 group experienced the highest decrease in GDP levels of 176.20 ± 20.25 mg/dL (p=0.043) while in the control group there was no significant difference (p=0.416). Giving combination powder has an effect in reducing GDP levels. Combination powder can be considered to reduce glucose levels. Keywords: diabetes, GDP, kelor, mengkudu, powder ABSTRAK Prevelansi penyandang diabetes melitus tipe 2 (DMT2) dengan komplikasi dislipidemia terus mengalami peningkatan. Abstract

Rambak (hide’s cracker) produced by small and medium-scale local communities still relies on production processes that have been passed down from generation to generation, resulting in minimal application of information and technology related to food safety. Thus, training in food hygienic practices needs to be carried out on different food handlers in order to provide an overview of the level of success of a program. This research aims to evaluate the impact of food hygienic practices training on knowledge, perception, attitude, and practice of food handlers in producing rambak. Training activities were carried out at the rambak production site involving 14 workers. The training process included presentations of raw materials (hides), rambak qualities, and good hygienic practices, then it was followed by demonstrations of good hygiene practices. Furthermore, the workers put into practice the work method demonstrated by the team. The assessment of knowledge, attitudes, and practices using questionnaire were carried out before and after the training. After training, the majority of rambak workers understand how to use raw materials and food hygiene practices, but they lack knowledge about packaging aspects and good rambak quality, such as washing fresh ingredients with tap water. Worker attitudes show that they have positive attitudes toward good hygiene practices, with the exception of touching food with bare hands. Food hygiene practice demonstrates that they had good hygienic practices, but they did not separate raw materials from cooked rambak. The effect of food hygiene practices training on internal characteristics demonstrates that workers' attitudes improved significantly (p<0,05), but not their knowledge and practice of hygienic principles. In summary, several aspects of worker characteristics need to be improved includes knowledge, attitude, and practice of food hygiene. The training effect improved rambak workers' attitudes but did not improve their knowledge or practice of hygienic principles

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous metabolic disorder characterized by increased blood sugar levels due to insulin disorders. Current treatment for diabetes mellitus focuses on controlling and lowering blood glucose. However, long-term treatment for diabetes mellitus can have side effects that cause several medical problems. Medical therapy using natural ingredients as an alternative therapy is currently being considered because of its potential and minimal side effects. Patikan kebo is a natural ingredient containing the flavonoid quercetin group. However, the antihyperglycemic effect of the patikan kebo leaves is not known with certainty. This study aimed to determine the effect of patikan kebo leaf extract (EDPK) on the levels of GDP, insulin, HOMA-IR, and HOMA-B in male rats with diabetes mellitus induced by streptozotocin (STZ) and nicotinamide (NA). The design of this study was a pre-and post-test control group design. 42 male Wistar rats were divided into 7 groups: K (normal mice), KN (DMT2 mice without intervention), KP (DMT2 mice intervened with acarbose 1.8 mg/kg BW/day), P1 (DMT2 mice intervened with EDPK dose 75 mg/kg BW/day), P2 (DMT2 mice intervened with EDPK dose 150 mg/kg BW/day), and P3 (DMT2 rats intervened with EDPK dose 300 mg/kg BW/day). The intervention was given for 7 and 15 days. The data were statistically analyzed using the Two Way ANOVA test. EDPK was proven to decrease GDP and HOMA-IR levels and increase insulin and HOMA-B in the male Wistar rat model of diabetes mellitus induced by STZ+NA. EDPK with a dose of 300 mg/kg BW/day proved to have the strongest antihyperglycemic effect. 42 ekor tikus jantan wistar dibagi menjadi 7 kelompok; K (tikus normal), KN (tikus DMT2 tanpa intervensi), KP (tikus DMT2 diintervensi dengan acarbose 1,8 mg/kgBB/hari), P1 (tikus DMT2 diintervensi EDPK dosis 75mg/kgBB/hari), P2 (tikus DMT2 diintervensi EDPK dosis 150mg/kgBB/hari), P3 (tikus DMT2 diintervensi EDPK dosis 300mg/kgBB/hari). Abstract

Uncontrolled anemia leads to a decline in hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte blood indices, posing various health risks. To address this, a study aimed to assess the effectiveness of cava smoothies and iron supplementation in boosting hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte indices among anemic adolescent girls. The study involved 87 adolescent girls with moderate anemia, divided into three groups. The control group (C) received weekly iron tablets (60 mg), while two intervention groups (I1 and I2) were given the same iron tablets along with cava smoothies in increasing doses over 28 days. The results revealed significant improvements in hemoglobin levels. Group C showed an increase of 0.27 g/dL, while I1 and I2 demonstrated remarkable gains of 1.46 g/dL and 2.54 g/dL, respectively. Furthermore, erythrocyte indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC) exhibited positive changes. Group C saw increases of 0.35 fl, 0.34 pg, and 0.27 g/dL, I1 showed improvements of 0.69 fl, 0.61 pg, and 0.64 g/dL, and I2 experienced substantial enhancements of 1.97 fl, 1.61 pg, and 1.60 g/dL. In conclusion, the study confirmed that cava smoothies and iron supplementation effectively raise hemoglobin levels and improve erythrocyte indices in anemic adolescent girls, highlighting the potential benefits of this intervention for combating anemia.
