Abstract

This research aims to examine the representation of cultural acculturation in the architecture of the Great Mosque of Banten and the surrounding buildings, which reflect the fusion of various cultures, such as Islam, Hinduism, Java, China, and Europe. The method used is the historical research method, which includes the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results showed that the Great Mosque of Banten not only functioned as a center for the spread of Islam, but also as a symbol of the power of the Banten Sultanate. Its architecture reflects the fusion of cultures across civilizations, which can be seen through elements such as the European-style tower that resembles a lighthouse, the multilevel roof structure typical of traditional Javanese architecture, and ornaments that show Chinese and Hindu influences. In addition to its religious function, the presence of the tombs of the Banten Sultans in the mosque complex also makes this place a center of pilgrimage activities and religious tourism destinations. This contributes to the social and economic dynamics of the local community. Thus, it can be concluded that the Great Mosque of Banten is a historical manifestation of cultural and religious acculturation in the context of Nusantara Islamic architecture. Keywords: Banten Sultanate, Great Mosque of Banten, cultural acculturation, Pilgrimage.

Abstract

This study examines the history, existence, and preservation of the cultural identity of the Lampung people in Cikoneng Village, Banten, as a Lampung village in Sundanese Tatar. The arrival of the Lampung people to Banten was influenced by the pepper trade, the spread of Islam, and the involvement of the Lampung military in the expansion of the Banten region. In its development, Lampung culture in Cikoneng has shifted due to acculturation with Sundanese and Javanese culture of Banten. The village burning incident by DI/TII in 1958 also destroyed Lampung's traditional houses, leaving the Lampung language as the main cultural identity that still survives. Other cultural symbols that still exist are the Darul Falah Mosque and the Tomb of Minak Sengaji. This study uses historical methods by combining written sources and oral traditions through interviews. The results of the analysis show that the preservation of Lampung's culture faces challenges due to cultural openness and a lack of collective efforts. Despite the mixing of dialects and adaptations of other cultures, the Cikoneng people still maintain the Lampung language is a form of their pride and ethnic identity.

Abstract

Abstract

Wayang kulit performances are a symbol of the drama of Javanese life. This research aims to understand Javanese cultural symbols in wayang performances, especially the play Pandu Suwarga, by using a mixed research method that combines library research and field research. The data collection technique was non-participant observation via YouTube social media and analyzed using Turner's symbol theory. The research results found that especially the Suwarga Pandu Play, contained deep moral lessons. One significant finding is the importance of filial piety to parents, which is manifested through the desire of the Five Pandavas for their parents to enter heaven. The characters in this show are symbolically divided into two main groups: good, represented by the Five Pandavas, and bad, represented by the Kauravas. Thus, this article contributes to the understanding of Javanese culture and the study of shadow puppets as a medium for storytelling and conveying life values. The symbols found in the play Pandu Suwarga provide a deep insight into the complexity of the wayang tradition and its relevance in permeating Javanese cultural values.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the multidimensional dynamics of the 1920 Iraqi Revolution by analyzing the intersection of Shi'i religious authority, British colonial administration, and Indigenous resistance. It focuses on how Mirza Muhammad Taqi Shirazi’s leadership mobilized anti-colonial resistance by navigating complex tribal politics and contestations over resources in the Hilla Division. Employing a multidisciplinary framework—drawing on postcolonial theory, religious authority, and resource mobilization theory—this research analyzes British administrative records and Iraqi local accounts. Comparative historical analysis is used to examine water management, taxation, and religious authority structures before and during the revolution. The findings reveal that Shirazi’s spiritual leadership legitimized and structured collective resistance, bridging divides between tribes and urban populations. The British-controlled Hindiya Barrage caused disruptions in irrigation and land use, triggering socioeconomic tensions that intensified opposition. Furthermore, contradictions within the colonial bureaucracy opened opportunities for effective local resistance. The revolution ultimately compelled a shift from direct to indirect British rule, shaping Iraq’s political trajectory. By moving beyond nationalist interpretations, this study highlights the role of religious authority, hydraulic politics, and colonial governmentality. It offers broader insights into anti-colonial movements where spiritual leadership and ecological control were central to resistance strategies against imperial dominance.

Abstract

Islam had a very advanced civilization, namely during the Abbasid dynasty. More precisely when Caliph Harun Al Rashid and his son Al Ma'mun led, around the 8th century AD to the 13th century AD. Harun Al Rashid and his son Al Ma'mun have big aspirations, namely to build an Islamic civilization that upholds science. But unfortunately this golden age of Islam must end. There are several factors that caused the end of this golden age of Islam. However, the most significant was the result of an attack from the Mongols that destroyed Baghdad along with the most complete library and center of knowledge at that time, Bayt Al Hikmah. This attack from the Mongols also caused the political power of Islam to be divided. Where the Islamic territory is no longer in one big unit, which is led by one leader who becomes the caliphate as the center of government. Islamic political conditions began to develop again and began to show progress after the emergence of the three great Islamic empires in the Middle Ages. The three great kingdoms, the Ottoman Empire in Turkey, the Mughal Empire in India, and the Shafavid Empire in Persia. Keywords: Conquest, Golden, Civilization

Abstract

This study examines the heyday of Islamic civilization in Andalusia and its influence on the rise of Europe through a historiographic approach. By highlighting the timeline of advanced civilization in Andalusia and the backward conditions in Christian Europe, this study shows how advances in education, culture, and scientific innovation in Andalusia, such as in Cordova, Granada, and Seville, have had a significant impact on Europe. By conducting a strategic analysis of figures who played a role in the Islamic civilization period in Andalusia, starting from invasions, glory, to decline. Using historical methods through primary sources from historical figures such as Philip Khuri Hitti and Reinhart Dozy, this study provides an in-depth picture of the transfer of science and culture from the Islamic world to Europe. This article reveals how the intellectual contributions of Islamic scholars in Andalusia from various fields of scholarship later became an inspiration and bridge to the revival of intellectual and cultural life in Europe during the Renaissance. Thus, this study offers a new perspective on the important role of Islamic civilization in forming the foundation for the rise of Europe.
