Abstract

The role of parenting in shaping adolescents' psychological and behavioral development has long been recognized, but its impact in the context of the digital age remains underexplored. This study aims to analyze the influence of father parenting styles on adolescents' life goals (youth purpose), with self-control and fear of missing out (FOMO) as mediating variables. With a cross-sectional explanatory design, the research involved 1,144 adolescents aged 15 to 18 years in the Greater Jakarta area. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings demonstrate that authoritative fathering positively and significantly predicts youth purpose, both directly and indirectly, by enhancing self-control and reducing FOMO. In contrast, permissive parenting utilize a negative influence on self-control and, consequently, on youth purpose. Authoritarian parenting was found to increase FOMO, which in turn indicates a complex dual effect, both supporting and impairing the development of youth purpose depending on its interaction with self-control. These results underscore the critical role of father parenting style in shaping adolescents’ psychological regulation and goal-setting behavior. The study contributes to existing theoretical frameworks by linking parenting approaches to adolescent developmental outcomes in digital and culturally specific contexts. Practical implications include promoting authoritative parenting and designing interventions to strengthen adolescents’ self-regulation.

Abstract

Education, which is believed as a fundamental role to play in developing of human resources, is directly affected by the school system and the learning methods. Implementing metacognitive strategies in learning methods are expected to have positive association with the developing of students’ learning methods, particularly in reading methods. However, although implementing metacognitive strategies in reading comprehension is believed to have positive association with students’ reading performance and motivation, it seems rarely to be applied in the reading comprehension strategies. The purpose of this study was to study the effectiveness of teaching and implementing one of metacognitive strategies, which was generating questions before, during, and after reading on student’s motivation and reading performance. This study was looking at how metacognitive strategies could be implemented in reading strategies and how they could change student’s motivation, including student’s self efficacy, interest, and attribution. Teaching metacognitive strategies were conducted three times to an international university student and the observation was done by using think aloud method and filling a motivational questionnaire. Motivation (self-efficacy, interest, and attribution) changes have revealed after the metacognitive training given. However, there is no difference in reading comprehension performance before and after implementing the metacognitive strategies. It was found that motivation changes did not associate with reading comprehension performance in this study. More comprehensive and explicit metacognitive training in longer time was suggested to see the improvements of the reading comprehension.

Abstract

Parenting style has been highlighted as one of the causes of depressive symptoms and also influences adolescent self-esteem. Although many studies have investigated the effect of self-esteem on depression, few have considered its role as a mediator variable. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the direct effect of parenting style on adolescent depression and its indirect effect on self-esteem. An online survey was completed voluntarily by 555 respondents from four senior high schools in Bekasi, Indonesia. The Patient Health Questionnaire, Parental Authority Questionnaire, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, and Path-SPSS analysis were employed to prove the hypothesis. The results show a significant direct effect of parenting [authoritative (β = -.257, p < .01), authoritarian (β = .181, p < .01) and permissive (β = .109, p < .01)] on depression. In addition, there is an indirect effect of authoritative (β = -.182, p < .01) and authoritarian (β = .055, p < .01) parenting styles on depression as mediated by self-esteem. The study indicates the importance of positive parenting and the building of adolescents' self-esteem to avoid the risk of depression.

Abstract

In the postnatal period, mothers face the challenge of adjusting to new roles and responsibilities, which can lead to increased stress and a risk of developing postpartum depression. This study explores the relationship between maternal characteristics, family functioning, social support, infant health, and postpartum depression. Data were obtained through a Family Function (Fungsi-Ga) questionnaire, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) from 150 mothers of three-month-old babies. The analysis was conducted using uses PLS-SEM (Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Model). The research results show that the model of postnatal depression formed is fit (goodness of fit .252). Social support has direct (β= -.170) and indirect negative effects on postnatal depression through family functioning and babies’ health (β= -.186). The family function has a direct negative effect (β= -.395) and an indirect one through babies’ health on postnatal depression (β= -.280), while babies’ health has a negative effect on such depression (β= -.301). The results of the research imply that education for mothers on social support, family functioning, and how to care for newborns, which helps ensure that babies’ health is optimal, is critical in reducing the risk of postnatal depression, especially in the first three postnatal months.

Abstract

The family is the primary environment that shapes a child's physical and psychological development. However, inappropriate family conditions or structures can be a source of stress that impacts adolescent resilience in facing life's challenges. This study aims to analyse the influence of parenting practices, self-efficacy, and peer support on the resilience of adolescents from intact and divorced families. The population in this study were high school students in Bogor City, with 240 respondents consisting of 180 adolescents from intact families and 60 from divorced families. The results showed that there were significant differences in parenting practices and self-efficacy between adolescents from intact and divorced families. Self-efficacy and peer support had a positive and significant effect on adolescent resilience. In addition, parenting practices also contributed to building resilience, although the effect was smaller. These findings emphasise the important role of parents and the social environment in supporting the psychological resilience of adolescents in both intact and divorced families. Family conditions or family structure have a significant impact on parenting practices, self-efficacy, and resilience in adolescents. Adolescents from intact families receive more positive parenting patterns, such as support, warmth, and high responsiveness from their parents. These parenting patterns impact high self-efficacy, especially in academic and emotional aspects. Conversely, adolescents from divorced families show lower self-efficacy, although self-acceptance in resilience is actually higher. Peer support was found to play a significant role in strengthening self-efficacy and resilience, without significant differences between family backgrounds. This indicates that peers are a relatively stable source of support for adolescents across various family conditions. Correlation and regression tests indicate that parenting practices, self-efficacy, and peer support have a positive and significant influence on adolescent resilience. These findings also indicate that self-efficacy is the most powerful factor in shaping resilience, especially for adolescents from divorced families. Negative parenting practices such as excessive punishment can weaken adolescent self-efficacy and resilience. Therefore, social support and adaptive parenting are crucial in building overall adolescent resilience. Key words: peer support, self-efficacy, intact families, parenting practices, resilience
