Abstract

Academic writing class in any Indonesian university context plays an important role for the students to cope with written academic assignments. This paper explores the perceptions of university students regarding their academic writing class. The participants were students of a private university in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. They were selected based on their achievements in the class and their genders. The data collection made use of interviews which were conducted immediately after the completion of the class.  Individual interviews were conducted with six participants with three of them were male and the other three were female who were mainly regarded as medium achievers. The interview sessions were audio taped. The data then transcribed and analysed thematically. The discussion of the findings showed that the students gained benefits from the class through the applications of genre-based approach teaching stages, explicit teaching, and group work, which enabled the lecturer to develop the students academic writing, critical thinking, and characters. Still, several limitations were also identified. Suggestions were offered by the participants for the betterment of the academic writing class.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan faktor yang mengganggu mahasiswa dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di kelas. Untuk mendapatkan jawaban tersebut, kuesioner dengan bentuk pertanyaan terbuka. Kuesioner diisi oleh 124 mahasiswa STKIP-PGRI Pontianak yang telah dipilih secara purposif. Pengolahan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan analisa isi yang melibatkan dua rater agar analisa data objektif. Untuk membantu analisa tersebut, disediakanlah panduan koding agar hasil pengolahan data sesuai dengan tujuan dari penelitian ini.Data analisis menunjukkan ada 28 pernyataan yang ditemukan sebagai gangguan dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di kelas. Dari 28 pernyataan tersebut, 17 pernyataan diantaranya dikategorikan sebagai faktor eksternal dan 11 pernyataan lainnya dikategorikan sebagai faktor internal. Lebih jauh, faktor eksternal yang paling banyak ditemui dipenelitian ini adalah berasal dari lingkungan belajar diikuti oleh faktor manusia. Sementara gangguan internal banyak dipengaruhi oleh kesehatan fisik manusia yang diikuti dengan gangguan yang bersifat psikologis. Sebagai tambahan, pengguna teknologi juga tercatat baik sebagai gangguan eksternal ataupun internal walaupun frekuensi pernyataan yang muncul hanya satu.Faktor eksternal dan internal ini memiliki pengaruh negatif terhadap proses belajar mengajar. Oleh karena itu, dosen harus menerapkan manajemen kelas yang efektif agar gangguan yang muncul dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dapat diminimalisir. Kata kunci: Bahasa Inggris, Pembelajaran di kelas, Faktor gangguan, Proses belajar, Sumber gangguan

Abstract

Penelitian bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan persepsi guru terhadap pelatihan karya tulis ilmiah (KTI) di Kabupaten Sekadau. Pelatihan KTI diadakan selama 6 hari dari tanggal 22-27 Oktober 2018 yang diikuti 20 guru dari berbagai sekolah yang ada di Kabupaten Sekadau sebagai peserta aktif. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Kuesioner terbuka didistribusikan kepada para guru yang mengikuti pelatihan KTI. Respons para guru dianalisis menggunakan analisis tematik. Peserta menunjukkan persepsi bahwa guru memerlukan pelatihan KTI. Hasil analisis terhadap respons kuesioner terbuka menunjukkan bahwa guru telah memiliki pemahaman dasar akan KTI. Guru juga memiliki harapan yang tinggi terhadap pelatihan KTI yaitu untuk membantu mereka menghasilkan KTI yang berkualitas dan dapat dipergunakan sebagai syarat kenaikan pangkat. Guru juga berharap dan memberi saran ada kegiatan tindak lanjut berupa bimbingan intensif untuk guru setelah pelatihan KTI.

Abstract

Pelatihan menghadapi berita palsu di era revolusi industri 4.0 ini bertujuan untuk membangun pengetahuan dan kemampuan dasar siswa dalam menghadapi berita palsu atau ?hoax? yang sering kali menyebar secara daring dan dapat merugikan banyak orang. Pelatihan ini dilaksanakan di Pondok Pesantren Hidayatul Mubtadi-Ien di Kubu Raya yang diikuti oleh 28 siswa yang terdiri dari siswa kelas 8 (sebanyak 4 siswa), kelas 9 (sebanyak 15 siswa), dan kelas 10 (sebanyak 9 siswa). Siswa diberikan materi mengenai berita palsu seperti indikator elemen berita yang perlu diperhatikan, dampak dari berita palsu, dan cara mencegah penyebaran berita palsu. Selesai pelatihan diberikan, siswa diminta untuk mengisi kuesioner persepsi akhir. Respon para siswa menunjukkan adanya perkembangan pengetahuan akan indikator berita palsu yang sangat diperlukan mereka untuk mengenali berita palsu. Dengan mengenali indikator tersebut, para siswa paham apa yang akan mereka lakukan selanjutnya, seperti mengecek kebenaran berita tersebut dan tidak membagi berita tersebut apabila dianggap palsu ke media sosial ataupun layanan sosial daring yang bisa berdampak negatif bagi orang lain. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa pelatihan menghadapi berita palsu bermanfaat bagi siswa dalam mengenali berita palsu melalui indikator yang telah diajarkan dan tindakan apa yang perlu dilakukan seandainya mereka menemukan berita yang dibagi ke akun sosial media ataupun layanan sosial mereka.

Abstract

For tertiary English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students, academic writing is not an easy task. It requires knowledge of the academic writing genres with their particular linguistic features. Moreover, academic writing demands good critical thinking. This research aims to explore the students' academic writing competencies that also focus on critical thinking. The research involved thirty-six first-year tertiary EFL students from a regular class of a private university in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The source for data collection was the students’ texts. Three texts were selected and the students were categorized into low, medium, and high levels of writing achievement. The text analysis utilized functional grammar rooted in systemic functional linguistics (Emilia, 2014). The analysis shows that the students, regardless of their levels of writing achievement, have little control over the schematic structure and linguistic features of an argumentative writing. The text analysis also shows that the students’ texts have some limitations as regards their critical thinking capacity. Still, a few examples of academic language were detected in the texts. The findings suggest that the lecturer should incorporate explicit teaching and cooperative learning activities to alleviate the students' difficulties and develop their academic writing and critical thinking capacity.

Scientific writing training was conducted for six days from 22-27 October 2018 in Sekadau regency. This research used a qualitative approach. An open-ended questionnaire was distributed to 20 teachers from various schools in Sekadau regency who attended the training. The responsses of the teachers were analyzed using thematic analysis. The teachers’ perception is they need this kind of traning of scientific writing.The results of the analysis show that the teachers have a basic understanding of scientific writing. The teachers also have a high expectation towards the training, that is, to help them to construct a good quality of scientific texts, which can be used as a requirement for a promotion. Lastly, the teachers suggest a follow-up activity in the form of intensive guidance for the teachers who have followed the training.

Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed to improve reading comprehension of public senior high school students by using Experience-Text-Relationship method. The research was done in two cycles and involved 31 eleventh-grade students of a public senior high school in SimpangDua, Ketapang in the Academic Year of 2018/2019. The researcher used observation field notes and reading tests to collect data of the study. A collaborator was involved during the observations and practices to build trustworthy of the study. The data from the observation field notes were analyzed qualitatively and the data from the reading test results were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The analysis of the observation field notes shows that the students became active and polite, had high enthusiasm in the teaching and learning processes. The analysis of the reading test results also reveals that the students had improved their reading comprehension. In conclusion, Experience-Text-Relationship method can improve the students’ reading comprehension. AbstrakPenelitian bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa SMA negeri menggunakan metode Experience-Text-Relationship. Penelitian ini menggunakan dua siklus dan melibatkan 31 siswa kelas sebelas siswa di salah satu SMA negeri di SimpangDua, Kabupaten Ketapang pada Tahun Akademik 2018/2019. Peneliti menggunakan catatan lapangan observasi dan tes membaca untuk mengumpulkan data penelitian. Seorang kolaborator dilibatkan selama pengamatan dan praktik untuk membangun penelitian yang dapat dipercaya. Data dari catatan lapangan observasi dianalisis secara kualitatif dan data dari hasil tes membaca dianalisis dengan menggunakan statistik deskriptif. Analisis catatan observasi lapangan menunjukkan bahwa siswa menjadi aktif dan sopan, memiliki antusiasme yang tinggi dalam proses belajar-mengajar. Analisis hasil tes membaca juga mengungkapkan bahwa terjadi peningkatan pemahaman membaca siswa. Kesimpulannya, metode Experience-Text-Relationship dapat membantu meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa.
