Abstract

Parasitoids of Leafminer Fly on Potato Fields and Non-Crop Vegetation in Pangalengan Area. The damage leaves of potato and non-crop vegetation caused by leafminer fly Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromzidae) were collected during August-October 2000 in Pangalengan area to evaluate the role of non-crop vegetation on the abundance of leafminer fly and its parasitoids. The leaves were placed into the bowls. The fly and parasitoid that emerged from the leaves were noted afterwards. The result of this survey showed that six families of plant were the host of L. huidobrensis on non-crop vegetation around the potato plantation. Those families are, Amaranthaceae, Asteraceae, Chenopodiaceae, Convolvulaceae, Malvaceae, and Solanaceae. The most abundant of non-crop vegetation found in the field was galinggang (Galinsoga Parviflora). The parasitoids that emerge from non-crop vegetation were Hemiptarsenus varicornis (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and Opius sp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The proportion of emerged fly were 68.5% from non-crop vegetation and 58.8% from potato, while those of parasitoids were 31.5% from non-crop vegetation and 41.2% from potato. Generally, non-crop vegetation in Pangalengan more potent as reservoar of pest than parasitoids.

Abstract

Field and laboratory studies were conducted on potatoes in pangalengan during April until October 2001, with the objectives to determine the daily activity pattern of the predatory fly Coenosia humilis Meigen (Diptera: Muscidae), to study the behavior of predator as well as level predation, and to evaluate effects of two cultural practices on population of flies. Our research revealed. that C. humilis were more active during morning and afternoon. Predatory flies attacked  by capturing the flying preys, and then sucked preys body content. The preys were generally small insects. About 60% of the preys were found to be agromyzed files, Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromyzidae). In laboratory each predator consumed 23.5 leafminer flies per day. Insecticide application significantly suppressed the predator and at the same time promoted the leafminer population.

Abstract

Infestation of pest is a major problem in the seedling and field of Jabon (Neolamarckia cadamba [Roxb.] Bosser) in Indonesia, especially in South Sumatra. Arthroschista hilaralis Walk. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is one defoliator pest attacked jabon stands. Some information about the infestation of A. hilaralis are required for pest control and prevent. The objective was to study the incidence level and intensity level of A. hilaralis on jabon stands at the planting age 2 and 4 years at the 2 seasons, and analyze the effect of weather (temperature and humidity) to foliar damage caused by A. hilaralis. This experiment was conducted in six locations in South Sumatra. The plots were delineated in three area that each plot was 0.03 ha in area and contain 20 jabon trees. Observations on the incidence and intensity level of A. hilaralis were conducted every month for 16 months representing two categories of time point observation of the rainy season and dry season. The results showed that infestation of A. hilaralis on jabon stands at the planting age 2 years and the rainy season was higher than planting age 4 years and another season. The incidence level and intensity level of A. hilaralis were 74.45% and 55.21% respectively. Weather factors (e.g. temperature and humidity) thought affected the incidence level and intensity level of A. hilaralis. Temperature has negative correlation to the incidence level of A. hilaralis (r = -0.629; p = 0.009) and to the intensity level of A. hilaralis (r = -0.546; p = 0.029). Humidity has positive correlation to the incidence level of A. hilaralis (r = 0.900; p < 0.0001) and to the intensity level of A. hilaralis (r = 0.768; p = 0.0005).

Abstract

Citrus is one of the most important fruit crops in Indonesia. One of the main problems in citrus production is mite infestation. Many mite species were reported attacking citrus around the world. This study was aimed to identify mites and describe the main characters of various species of mites on citrus in Java, Indonesia. Sampling was carried out at the location of citrus plantations and citrus plants in the yard of the house which was carried out purposively. In a large planting area, sampling was carried out on 10 citrus trees that showed symptoms of mite attack. The identification process is carried out by a mounting process to obtain specimens that can be observed under a compound microscope using PVA. Eight species of mites were collected from 8 various of citrus from 15 locations. Six mites species were identified as phytophagous, i.e., Panonychus citri McGregor, Eotetranychus sp., Eutetranychus sp. (Family Tetranychidae), Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Family Tenuipalpidae), Tarsonemus bilobatus Suski (Family Tarsonemidae), and Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashmead) (Family Eriophyidae). Meanwhile, the other two species, Amblyseius sp. (Family Phytoseiidae) and Cheletogenes ornatus (Canestrini & Fanzago) (Family Cheyletidae) were predators. Unidentified mites were Family Tydeidae and Winterschmidtiidae. According to Regulation No. 31 of 2018, P. citri and Ph. oleivora are quarantine pest. T. bilobatus is firstly reported in Indonesia.

Abstract

Leaf miners, Liriomyza spp., have developed as a severe pest in recent years, reducing the production of several ornamental and crops in Indonesia. As a result, monitoring and control mechanisms have been proposed. This research aimed to investigate community structure and identify Liriomyza spp., which impacts crops and natural parasitoids in Bali Province. Leaf samples of vegetables, ornamental plants, and related species were collected in all regencies/cities of Bali Province in 2019 and 2020 and preserved in the laboratory for observation and counting of leaf miners and related parasitoids. The findings revealed that four Liriomyza spp. were detected in host plants, namely Liriomyza sativae Blanchard (Diptera: Agromyzidae), Liriomyza huidobrensis Blanchard (Diptera: Agromyzidae), Liriomyza chinensis Kato (Diptera: Agromyzidae), and Liriomyza trifolii Burgess (Diptera: Agromyzidae). Asteraceae species were the most common host plants attacked by leaf miners in the field. The same occurrence was discovered at both heights (high and lowlands). The dry season is the most crucial component in the abundance of Liriomyza spp. In addition, parasitoids of the type Opius cromatomiyae Belokobylskij and Wharton (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Hemiptarsenun varicornis Girault (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) were identified in abundance in Asteraceae plants. Similarly, the parasitization rate of the two parasitoids was found to be high in plants of the Asteraceae and Brassicae families. This approach highlights the decision-making process for controlling Liriomyza spp. on diverse host plant families by developing ecologically beneficial and sustainable parasitoids.

Abstract

Abstract

Thrips are widely reported as pests in vegetable crops. However, the existence of Phlaeothripidae members has a less concern in Indonesia. Phlaeothripidae is the only family of  Tubulifera Suborder and some reports suggested that they had potential to be pests in several crops due to their ability to roll up and to make galls on leaves. The first step in pest management attempt is to identify the pest accurately and quickly, so the pest management can be on target and more efficient. One of the identification methods is the molecular identification using DNA barcoding techniques. This study aimed to characterize and to compare species thrips in banyan, nutmeg, and marine seruni based on their molecular characteristics. This research was conducted in Bogor and Kuningan. The process of molecular characterization consisteds of four steps  DNA total extraction, amplification by using PCR, COI gene sequence, and data analysis.  PCR programme was succesfully to amplified mtCOI gene fragment at 710 bp. The length of mtCOI gene of Gynaikothrips uzeli, Haplothrips ganglbaueri, and Pseudophilothrips ichini were 704, 686, and 702 bp dominated by A and T bases with nucleotide variation value of 27.8%. This results confirmed that molecular characterization using mtCOI gene mitochondrial had successfully supported the morphological data. How to CiteKurniawaty, N., Hidayat, P. Rauf, A. (2016).
