Abstract

This article has an objective to discuss Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory. It focuses on the concepts of denotative meaning, connotative meaning and mythological meaning and builds upon Ferdinand de Saussure’s foundational semiotics. This research has a common methodological way of writing that is by using qualitative method or library research. The result of discussion is applicable to Barthes’ theory in comprehending of sign ways to account for cultural and ideological dimensions. His model of myth as a second order of semiological systems offers a powerful frame work for comprehending the ways in which everyday objects and media carry deeper ideological meanings. Through the analysis of selected texts of media, this research postulates how denotation and connotation are exemplified and providing literal and non-literal meanings. Denotative meaning provides literal meaning, connotation gives interpretative depth or individual meaning, as myth naturalizes ideological construction and it becomes part of artificial meanings. This article makes the conclusion that Barthes’ theory of semiotics is essential for critically decoding message in contemporary media culture.

Abstract

Kelangkaan pupuk masih menjadi permasalahan bagi petani dalam meningkatkan produksi padi. Selain langka, pupuk subsidi yang sebagian besar adalah pupuk kimia diketahui memberikan efek negatif kepada tanah, disamping harganya yang fluktuatif di tiap daerah. Diantara upaya yang dapat dilakukan untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut adalah dengan membuat pupuk organik cair sebagai alternatif. Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah mendampingi mitra dalam pembuatan pupuk POC NPK untuk tananam padi di Desa Kolam Percut Sei Tuan. Metode yang digunakan adalah ceramah, diskusi, demonstrasi, dan praktik. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan telah terjadi peningkatan pemahaman peserta kegiatan, dengan rata-rata peningkatan sebesar 72,15%. Aplikasi POC NPK yang dihasilkan terbukti dapat meningkatkan kesuburan dan produktivitas tanaman padi. Kegiatan pengabdian ini terbukti dapat memberikan manfaat yang nyata bagi mitra.

Abstract

Program pengabdian kepada msayarakat ini merupakan kolaborasi antara Universitas Muslim Nusantara Al-Washliyah dengan Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) yang mengeksplorasi makna budaya dan linguistic dari kuliner tradisional di Medan dan Penang. Tujuan dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah melestarikan warisan memalui pendokumentasian, analisis, dan perbandingan istilah kuliner, akar sejarah, serta makna simbolis ditengah tantangan globalisasi. Dengan pendekatan campuran-gabungan antara etnografi lapangan, linguistic komputasional (pemetaan leksikal berbasis AI), dan analisis semiotik- tim mengumpulkan data dari sejarah lisan, resep kuno dan etnogradi digital. Hasil dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini menonjolkan variasi regional terkait migrasi dan pengaruh colonial dan terdatanya istilah seperti rendang (Minang) dan nasi kandar (Melayu-India), dilengkapi etimologi dan narasi budaya.

Abstract

This classroom action research (CAR) examines the efficacy of Canva-based learning media in enhancing secondary students’ procedural writing skills. Addressing the common challenges of structuring logical sequences and articulating details in procedural texts, the study involved 30 tenth-grade students at an Indonesian public high school, selected through purposive sampling due to persistent difficulties in writing tasks. Over two iterative cycles, Canva’s visual design tools—templates, icons, and multimedia elements—were integrated into instructional strategies to scaffold students’ understanding of procedural text components (goal, materials, steps). Data were triangulated through pre- and post-tests, observational checklists, and student questionnaires, analyzed quantitatively via descriptive statistics and qualitatively through thematic coding. Results demonstrated significant progress: mean scores rose from 62.3 (pre-test) to 82.4 (Cycle 2), with pass rates (≥65) surging from 30% to 90%. Observational data revealed increased engagement, with active participation climbing from 65% (Cycle 1) to 90% (Cycle 2), while questionnaires indicated 90% of students credited Canva for improved idea organization. The intervention’s success aligns with Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, as dual-coding visual-textual stimuli reduced cognitive load and reinforced retention. Additionally, collaborative features in Canva fostered peer feedback, aligning with Vygotsky’s social constructivism. Challenges in Cycle 1, such as incoherent transitions, were remediated in Cycle 2 through focused editing exercises and animated simulations. The study underscores Canva’s potential as a pedagogical tool for procedural writing, emphasizing its accessibility and capacity to bridge creativity with structured learning. Recommendations include teacher training in digital design tools and further research on Canva’s applicability across diverse text genres and educational contexts.

Abstract

Pengabdian masyarakat yang akan dilaksanakan ini bertempat Jalan Kemenangan, Indra Kasih, Kec. Medan Tembung, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara. Mitra di dalam pengabdian ini adalah Guru-guru TK PAUD R.A Madrasah Hamdaniyah. Mereka berkompeten dalam bidang pengajaran bahasa Inggris untuk anak usia dini. Beberapa guru masih cenderung monoton dan minim penggunaan media serta belum mengetahui media pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang menarik dan interaktif serta mungkin kurang familiar dengan aplikasi dan teknologi digital, sehingga butuh waktu lebih lama untuk mempelajari cara menggunakannya secara efektif. Tingkat motivasi guru juga berbeda dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dan belum adanya pendampingan penyelesaian masalah dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris. Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi guru Madrasah Hamdaniyah dalam menguasai pengetahuan dasar bahasa Inggris, keterampilan menggunakan media pembelajaran berbasis teknologi berupa website wordwall dalam proses belajar mengajar bahasa Inggris dan mengajarkannya bahasa kepada anak usia dini. Tim pengabdian akan memberi solusi terhadap permasalahan yang ditemukan dengan cara memotivasi guru-guru TK PAUD R.A Madrasah Hamdaniyah untuk menggunakan media pembelajaran berbasis teknologi berupa website wordwall dalam proses belajar mengajar kemudian cara mengajarkannya kepada anak-anak TK PAUD R.A Madrasah Hamdaniyah. Tim pengabdian selanjutnya memberikan materi berupa penggunaan dasar website wordwall, penerapan website wordwall dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, dan strategi mengajar bahasa Inggris dengan website wordwall kepada guru-guru TK PAUD R.A Madrasah Hamdaniyah. Metode yang digunakan dalam pengabdian ini adalah metode ceramah, diskusi dan demonstrasi. Metode ceramah dan diskusi digunakan untuk memberikan penjelasan tentang dasar-dasar bahasa Inggris, pentingnya penggunaan teknologi dalam pembelajaran, serta cara memanfaatkan website Wordwall untuk mengajarkan bahasa Inggris kepada anak usia dini. Sedangkan metode demonstrasi digunakan untuk memperaktikkan penggunaan website wordwall dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dan cara mengajarkannya kepada anak-anak TK PAUD R.A Madrasah Hamdaniyah.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze gender inequality in Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie (1900), focusing on the intersection of social structure and economic inequality. Using a qualitative research method, as outlined by Creswell (2013), this study examines the ways in which gender roles and social class disparities shape the lives and experiences of the novel's central characters. The theoretical framework draws upon Fakih’s (2013) perspective on gender inequality, which highlights the systemic nature of gender-based oppression within social and economic structures. Through a close reading of Sister Carrie, the research explores how Carrie Meeber’s social mobility and relationships are impacted by her gender, as well as how economic systems reinforce her position as a marginalized woman. The analysis reveals the intricate ways in which gender inequality is intertwined with class structures and economic forces, influencing the choices and agency of female characters in a capitalist society. This study contributes to understanding the role of gender and economic inequality in early 20th-century American literature, shedding light on the enduring relevance of these issues in contemporary society.

Abstract

This research and development (R&D) study aimed to develop, validate, and test the effectiveness of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) based reading comprehension materials for eleventh-grade students. Recognizing that reading comprehension is a critical yet challenging skill, this study addressed the need for more creative and effective teaching methods. OBE, which focuses on organizing the educational system around essential outcomes students must achieve, was employed as the foundational framework. The study followed the Borg & Gall R&D cycle. The population was students of SMK AL WASHLIYAH 12 SEI RAMPAH, with a sample of 15 students from class XI-1 selected as the experimental group. Data were collected through literacy studies, interviews, observations, group discussions, and documentation. Material validation was analyzed using descriptive quantitative techniques, resulting in an average validity score of 4.1, indicating a "good" level of quality. The effectiveness of the developed materials was determined using the N-gain score. The results demonstrated a significant improvement, with an average increase of 9.13% in learning outcomes and a classical passing rate of 86.66%. The N-gain score of 81.94% further confirms the high effectiveness of the OBE-based materials. It was concluded that the developed reading comprehension materials are both valid and effective, making them a viable tool for enhancing English reading instruction and achieving defined learning outcomes.
