Abstract

Background. Augmented reality (AR) is increasingly being integrated into education, enhancing learning experiences through interactive and immersive environments. In language learning, AR holds promise for increasing engagement and cultural immersion. Purpose. To investigate the impact of AR on English language learning, comparing engagement and cultural immersion in formal and informal contexts. Method. Mixed-methods approach involving middle school, high school, and university students. Participants were divided into experimental (AR) and control (traditional methods) groups. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, surveys, and interviews to measure language proficiency, engagement, and cultural awareness. Results. Significant improvements were observed in both learning contexts. In formal settings, there was a 17% increase in test scores, while informal settings saw a 13% increase. Formal learners exhibited higher engagement and cultural awareness, with 80% reporting high engagement compared to 70% in informal settings. Formal learners frequently utilized interactive features, enhancing their learning experience, whereas informal learners showed a preference for independent study tools offered by AR applications. Conclusion. AR significantly enhances English language learning, particularly within formal educational environments. The study highlights AR's potential to boost student engagement and cultural understanding, suggesting that tailored approaches are necessary to optimize its use across different learning contexts. The findings indicate that while both formal and informal settings benefit from AR, the structured environment of formal education leverages the technology's interactive features more effectively, leading to greater student engagement and improved learning outcomes. These insights are valuable for educators and developers aiming to integrate AR in language learning, emphasizing the need for context-specific strategies to maximize its educational benefits.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tindak elisitasi dan direktif dalam interaksi kelas guru Bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 3 Sumalata Timur dan SMP Negeri 1 Sumalata, Kawasan Teluk Tomini, dan mengidentifikasi penggunaan tindak direktif dalam mengarahkan proses pembelajaran. Menggunakan pendekatan mikroetnografi, penelitian ini mengamati dan merekam interaksi dalam kelas untuk memahami cara guru mengelola pembelajaran melalui tindak elisitasi yang mendorong partisipasi siswa dan tindak direktif yang memberikan instruksi. Data dianalisis dengan memfokuskan pada jenis dan frekuensi tindak elisitasi serta direktif yang digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan strategi elisitasi yang variatif meningkatkan keterlibatan siswa, dan guru menggunakan berbagai strategi elisitasi, seperti pertanyaan terbuka dan penugasan diskusi, yang terbukti meningkatkan keterlibatan siswa, serta siswa menunjukkan respons positif dan aktif berpartisipasi ketika elisitasi dilakukan dengan cara yang menarik. Jenis elisitasi ekspresif yang ditemukan dalam data meliputi tuturan terima kasih, memberikan selamatm tindak memuji, mengkritik, menyalahkan, dan meminta maaf. Sementara itu, tindak elsisitasi direktif meliputi tindak memerintah, memohon, dan memesan. Temuan ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi pada pengembangan praktik pengajaran yang lebih interaktif dan efektif di sekolah. Penelitian ini juga menyarankan perlunya pelatihan bagi guru untuk memperkuat kemampuan mereka dalam memanfaatkan kedua jenis tindak ini dalam interaksi kelas. Abstract

This community service program is one of the programs carried out by the proposing team to assist the digital eduliteration practice of learning English at PKBM Nurain, Kab. Bone Bolango. The objectives of organizing this service program are 1) Increasing the learning motivation of equivalency education students in English subjects; 2) Activate students in learning English without burdening the age gradation factor in learning; 3) Improving students' English competence in class, and 4) Supporting the process of learning English in class.The implementation of collaborative service activities at PKBM Nurain, Dunggala Village, Bone Bolango Regency, emphasized the aim of increasing the learning motivation of equality education students at PKBM Nurain. Through this program the lecturers can apply knowledge, skills and technology to deal with deficiencies and problems faced by students at PKBM Nurain Dunggala Village. The results obtained in this service are that the process of learning English can be developed innovatively through the application of YouTube-based learning video media so that the ability to understand material or concepts can develop significantly.

Abstract

The importance of the existence of UMKM is able to support the surrounding economy and be able to revive other supporting local businesses. This community service aims to: 1) There is a need for community provision and understanding of the concept of digital-based marketing as a support for business activities in the village, 2) Facilitate access to village sales and production processes so that community businesses can run smoothly, 3) There is a need for bilingual digital eduliteration to the community as an effort in marketing in the village. This community service includes five stages including the preparation stage, the implementation stage, program preparation, program implementation, and reporting. At the preparatory stage, the team conducted a location survey and recruited participants for the service, and at the implementation stage there were several stages carried out by the team including: problem identification and needs analysis. The results of program implementation showed that the results of an internal meeting held by Ilomata KKNT students and the head of Ilomata Village had concluded several problems that would become priority work for students in Ilomata Village, including: 1) the problem of stunting; 2) Identity of UMKM in Ilomata Village; 3) Awareness of loose animal breeders. Each of these problems has been carried out by UNG KKNT students well through the stages of socialization and counseling, labeling of UMKM identities, as well as installing billboards related to regulations for loose animal breeders. The conclusion from this implementation is that every activity carried out is inseparable from the role of the Ilomata community, village government, and Bilato sub-district government in solving every problem faced by Ilomata village.

Abstract

The coastal area is currently a trending spot for tourists who want to enjoy a vacation. Even now travelers are hunting for beach tourism as a diving spot for holidays, including the coast of the Tomini Bay area. Most of the Tomini Bay area is a tourist destination for local and international tourists. However, unfortunately the charm of beach tourism in the Tomini Bay area has not been broadcast nationally or internationally, either in the form of image documentation or cinematic infographics. Therefore, the purpose of this community service is to empower the community in edutourism through English language training and tourism promotion, the beach care movement, and the accessibility of tourism promotion through digital-based and bilingual cinematic infographics (virtual tour). This program is used as an initial step to form a tourism awareness group (POKDARWIS) for the Botubarani community as a form of continuing the program to strengthen the community's economy so that it is not swallowed up by the masses. This program will later form self-help and self-help groups that grow from, by and for the community as a destination for village tourism development, especially the Tomini Bay area. It is hoped that this program will be the first step to deliver Botubarani village as a tourist destination not only on a national scale, but also on an international scale.

Abstract

This research aims to find the types of flouting maxim that appear in the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle movie. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method, used to explain in depth about the flouting maxim. The data were taken from conversations in the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle movie by watching it repeatedly. In this research, the researcher used the theory of Grice (1975) to analyze the types of flouting maxim, which consist of four types of maxims, namely the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance, and the maxim of manner. The results of this research indicate that the four types of flouting maxim appear during the conversation in the movie. Among the types of flouting maxim, the dominant data that appears in this research is the flouting the maxim of relevance. Meanwhile, the flouting maxim that occurs least frequently is the maxim of quality. There is one uniqueness found in this research that is not in Grice's theory but is found in the data. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the psychological and situational factors that influence students' willingness to communicate (WTC) in speaking classes. This study focuses on second-year students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Gorontalo who have completed the course “Speaking for Professional Context.” Using a qualitative design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten participants selected through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis was used to identify the main themes in the data. The results of the study indicate that both psychological and situational factors significantly influence students' WTC. The most influential psychological factor is self-confidence, while the prominent situational factors include the interlocutor and the role of lecturers. Other prominent themes include learning anxiety, the influence of topic type on perceived communicative competence, classroom atmosphere, and instructor strategies. In practice, these findings can provide information and strategies for student learning and teaching activities in the classroom

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of using cartoon movie clips to enhance students' vocabulary mastery at SDN 5 Suwawa. The research employed a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test involving 31 fifth-grade students. The treatment was conducted over six sessions, where students were taught vocabulary through animated clips combined with games and role-playing strategies. The data were collected through vocabulary tests administered before and after the treatment. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary scores, with the average score increasing from 32.93 in the pre-test to 65.5 in the post-test. Statistical analysis using a t-test indicated that the calculated t-value (-26.7) was lower than the critical value (-1.70), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (H1). These findings support the conclusion that cartoon movie clips are effective in improving vocabulary mastery. Moreover, cartoon clips provided a visual and auditory learning experience that made vocabulary learning more engaging and enjoyable. However, challenges such as potential distractions and limited generalizability were also identified.

Abstract

This study explores the teaching strategies used by English teachers at SLB Negeri Bone Bolango for students with intellectual disabilities. The research aims to identify the types of strategies applied in teaching English to these students. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through observations and interviews conducted in June 2024. The findings indicate three main strategies implemented by teachers: Direct Method, Total Physical Response (TPR), and Individual Learning. Each strategy is adapted to the students' needs and supported by appropriate media and approaches. Teachers face challenges such as students’ limited vocabulary comprehension, limited time for individualized instruction, and the need for an inclusive learning environment. To address these, teachers employ visual aids, physical activities, and adjust learning materials. The results reveal that the application of suitable teaching strategies can enhance students’ understanding and active participation in learning English.

Abstract

The community service program aims to empower the local community with a focus on sustainable and regenerative tourism development. This program focuses on two main aspects: environmental preservation and sustainable promotion of local potential. The program’s objectives are: 1) Prioritizing a tourism concept that not only promotes sustainability but also strives to restore and improve local ecosystems, 2) This programprovides training to theDunggala community on promoting local tourism potential in two languages (Indonesian and English),3) Towards Digipreneur: Through digitalentrepreneurship training, the Dunggala community is taught how to use digital technology to promote their tourism destinations. The implementation method for the program is designed systematically to effectively achieve the expected goals and outcomes. The activities planned for August and September 2024 aim to empower local communities, especially in rural areas like Dunggala, by combining digital entrepreneurship, sustainable tourism, and creative economy development. The outcomes of this program are: the community becomes capable of managing and promoting tourist destinations with a regenerative approach, improved English communication skills to welcome foreign tourists, enhanced digital literacy, enabling them to become digipreneurs who can adapt to the digital era, and the preservation of the local environment and culture through responsible tourism management.ABSTRAKProgram pengabdian masyarakat bertujuan untuk memberdayakan masyarakat lokal dengan fokus pada pengembangan pariwisata berkelanjutan dan regeneratif. Program ini bertumpu pada dua aspek utama: preservasi (pelestarian) lingkungan serta peningkatan promosi potensi lokal yang berkelanjutan. Tujuan lainnya program ini adalah 1) Regenerative Tourism: Mengedepankan konsep pariwisata yang tidak hanya berkelanjutan; 2) Promosi Potensi Lokal Berbasis Bilingual: Program ini memberikan pelatihan kepada masyarakat Dunggala untuk mempromosikan potensi wisata lokal dalam dua bahasa (Bahasa Indonesia dan Bahasa Inggris); 3) Menuju Digipreneur: Melalui pelatihan kewirausahaan digital, masyarakat Dunggala diajari cara menggunakan teknologi digital untuk mempromosikan destinasi wisata mereka. Metode pelaksanaan program dirancang secara sistematis untuk mencapai tujuan dan hasil yang diharapkan secara efektif. Kegiatan yang direncanakan untuk Agustus dan September 2024 bertujuan untuk memberdayakan komunitas lokal, terutama di daerah pedesaan seperti Dunggala, dengan menggabungkan kewirausahaan digital, pariwisata berkelanjutan, dan pengembangan ekonomi kreatif. Hasil yang diperoleh dalam program ini adalah masyarakat mampu mengelola dan mempromosikan destinasi wisata dengan pendekatan regeneratif, peningkatan kemampuan komunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris untuk menyambut wisatawan asing, peningkatan literasi digital masyarakat, sehingga mereka dapat menjadi digipreneur yang mampu beradaptasi dengan era digital, dan terlestarikannya lingkungan dan budaya lokal melalui pengelolaan pariwisata yang bertanggung jawab.
