Abstract

This paper is aimed at analyzing the cyclical behavior of capital buffer of Islamic and conventional banks in Indonesia. More specifically, this paper has three objectives. First, to test whether capital buffer in Indonesian banking industry as a whole is countercyclical or procyclical. Second, to test whether there is a difference in the level of capital buffer of Islamic banks as compared to the level of capital buffer of conventional banks. Third, to test whether there is a difference in the cyclicality of capital buffer of Islamic and conventional banks. The analysis in this paper is conducted using the standard dynamic system generalized method of moments (system GMM) regressions and includes a panel of 108 banks over the period between 2004 and 2019. From the results, it can be concluded that the capital buffer of Islamic and conventional banks in Indonesia is procyclical. From the results, it can also be concluded that no difference exists in the level of capital buffer of Islamic banks as compared to conventional banks and in the cyclicality of capital buffer in Islamic and conventional banking. If the countercyclical capital buffer is achieved, a policy measure to alter the cyclical behavior of capital buffer of Islamic and conventional banks in Indonesia therefore is a must. Such policy measure needs not to be specified for Islamic or conventional banking industry.

Abstract

This study explored the impact of participation in Rotating Savings and Credit Associations (ROSCAs) on household asset poverty in Indonesia. It used secondary data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) waves 4 and 5. Asset poverty was measured using indicators from the Socioeconomic Data Collection; households were considered asset poor if they failed to meet nine out of 14 indicators. The analysis applied panel logistic regression with a fixed effects model. The results showed that ROSCA participation significantly reduced the likelihood of asset poverty. These findings supported previous studies that emphasized the positive effect of ROSCAs in reducing expenditure poverty. The study provided empirical evidence of ROSCAs’ role in improving household economic resilience. It suggested that government and related institutions could support and encourage ROSCAs as part of broader poverty reduction and financial security strategies.

Indonesia is one of the largest coal producers globally, with coal as the main export commodity compared to other commodities in the mining sector. The more competitive the world coal market is, the Indonesian coal market share faces threats from other coal exporting countries. The increasing commitment of countries to reduce air pollution by cutting the use of coal for power plants at PLTU. This study analyzes the competitiveness and various factors that influence the competitiveness of Indonesian coal in 8 export destination countries. This study seeks to determine how the development of Indonesia's coal competitiveness to the eight central destination countries and what factors affect Indonesia's coal exports for the 2009-2020 period to the eight central destination countries using RCA analysis and panel data regression. Based on the analysis, results show that the competitiveness of Indonesia's coal exports to 8 destination countries is excellent. It can be seen from the RCA value obtained by each country from 2009-to 2020, which is greater than 1. Meanwhile, based on the results of panel data, regression estimates with random models show that GDP per capita, population, and coal prices have a negative and significant impact on coal competitiveness in 8 Indonesian coal importing countries. The study results did not find the effect of exchange rates and CPO prices on coal competitiveness in 8 Indonesian coal importing countries.

This study aims to analyze the factors that influence the decision to revisit millennial Muslims to the halal tourist area of Bukittinggi City. This research uses the Theory of Planned Behavior as a basis. This research uses quantitative methods and is analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling - Least Square Partial (SEM-PLS) mode. The sampling method in this study ussed nonprobability sampling with purposive sampling technique. Respondents used were 218 tourists who returned to the halal tourism area of Bukittinggi City. The results showed that destination image and service quality had a significant effect on revisit decisions. Meanwhile, halal awareness does not significantly influence the decision to revisit millennial Muslims to the halal tourist area of Bukittinggi City. Abstract

This paper examines the effect of profit-and-loss sharing financing (PLS financing) and operating expenses on the intermediation costs of Islamic rural banks in Indonesia. Using a panel dataset of 147 Islamic rural banks over the period 2011-2021 and dynamic panel regressions, it shows that, in general, PLS financing exerts no significant influence on the Islamic rural banks’ intermediation costs, as measured by the net margin. Meanwhile, the operating expenses are significantly and positively affecting the banks’ net margin, the result that is robust to different regression specifications. Accordingly, the initiatives to promote PLS financing will, at least, not necessarily have a detrimental effect on the net margin. Operating expenses matter more, underscoring the need for serious efforts to improve the effectiveness of Islamic local banks’ cost management.

Abstract

This research investigates the effect of constructive social capital such as religious tolerance, political participation, and marriage; and destructive social capital such as the corruption culture and discrimination behavior towards the economic growth rate of member countries of the Islamic Cooperation Organization (OIC) 2014-2017. The results of the research estimation using the technique of fixed effect (FE) from the panel data of the OIC countries show that religious tolerance measured using the freedom of religion index (FRI) shows a positive and significant effect on the economic growth rate; political participation as measured by political rights index (PRI) has a significant negative effect on the economic growth rate; marriage measured using the percentage of married woman (PMW) has a positive effect on the economic growth rate but is not significant; corruption culture measured using corruption perception index (CPI) has a negative and not significant effect on the economic growth rate; and discrimination behavior measured using discrimination and violence against minorities index (DVI) shows a negative and not significant effect on the economic growth rate.
