Abstract

The study aims to be analyzed observed meaning in poetry written by English Department at of Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Mathla’ul Anwar University. It applied Halliday Systemic Functional Grammar to identify and analyze the occurrences of processes in the poetry. Gerrot and Wignell (2008:6) explain that the theory of grammar is needed to know the text working. By using the theory, the reader will understand the text clearly. One of the ways to convey meaning is by analyzing the transitivity pattern in the poetry. Transitivity is represented experiential meaning that are meaning about the world experience and what is going on in the clause. The authors applied descriptive analysis method, it was in order to elaborate the appearing process types of transitivity in poems and to describe the percentage of process types. After determining the type of process for each predicator, the percentages were counting and comparing one to another independently in each poem. Further, the choice of processes and patterns lead to the discussion on the purposes and effects. The examination on the transitivity analysis shows that the processes employed to meaning behind the poems using transitivity are material, mental, relational, verbal, and behavioral processes. The processes tell particular significant to the process of meaning. For instance, material processes frequently dominated the meaning of the poems. The other transitivity processes resemble the purpose and effect based on their meanings. Hopefully, this paper might serve an example of how to examine the language patterns in a literary work to further observe the purposes and the effects of the patterns.

This study uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design research method, which uses three concepts, namely, pre-test, treatment and post-test. The population was 180 students and the samples of this research was 72 students that consisted of 36 students of experimental class and 36 students of control class. The result of post-test both experimental class and control class, after getting the treatment the result of experimental class is 69.30 and control class is 68.47, it means the result of experimental class is higher than control class. In addition, based on the paired samples t-test with the level significant 5% (a=0.05), it found that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Because the significance (2 tailed) result the experimental class was lower than level significance 5% (0.000 < a=0.05). The result reveal that using the strategy of throwing snowballs is very helpful and easy for students to learn, this media can improve students' reading comprehension. Based on the result in this study, that the strategy throwing snowballs is very useful for teachers to improve students' reading comprehension, and easy to learn for students.

Storytelling as the entire context of a moment when oral narration of stories in verse or in prose, is performed or led by one person before a live audience. The scope of this research focuses on analyzing the effect of using storytelling method by video toward students’ speaking skill. This research took quantitative approach, while the method used experimental with pre-test and post-test experimental class and control class design. The instrument used was achievement test. The subjects of this study were selected using random sampling. The results of the analysis of the pre- test and post-test experiments using the storytelling method showed an Sig (2-tailed) of 0.00 from the decision that if Sig (2-tailed) < 0.05 then the data was significant, meaning that the hypothesis was accepted. And if the result of Asymp Sig (2-Tailed) > 0.05 then the hypothesis is rejected. On the other word, there is any significant effect of Storytelling towards Students’ Speaking Skill.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of Show and Tell Toward Students’ Speaking Skill at The Eighth Grade Students of Islamic Junior High School Darul Ulum West Jakarta in Academic Year 2021/2022. This study used quantitative approach with quasi experimental method using pre-test post-test control and experimental group design. In this research the researcher used cluster random sampling technique with total of sample is 60 students. In order to analyze the data, the researcher used statistical computation by using SPSS software. After conducting the research by giving pre-test and post-test to experimental class by using show and tell and storytelling in control class, the researcher calculate the pre-requirement of research analysis (normality and homogeneity test). The result of normality test shows that p-value (0.069, 0.066, 0.062, and 0.086) are higher than α = 0.05, on the other word the data is normally distributed, while the result of homogeneity test shows that p-value of Pre-Test is (0,756) > α = 0.05 and p-value Post-Test is (0,288)> α = 0.05, on the other word, the data are homogenous. The last step is calculating the t-test, the kind of t-test used is Paired Sample T-test. The result shows that sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 < 0.05, it means that Show and Tell has significant effect to increasing students’ speaking skill.
