Abstract

Improvement of rice productivity can be achieved by conducting farming efficiency and utilizing  local resources. The Azolla water fern is a local resource that can be used as organic fertilizer in organic farming. Organic farming is a cultivation technique that utilizes organic materials to preserve the production environment so that the sustainability of agriculture can be maintained. This study aimed to determine the efficiency of the use of organic ameliorant added with Azolla sp. compost and biological fertilizers on soil C-organic content, C/N ratio of soil and organic rice yields. This research was conducted at the Experimental Station of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran. The design used was randomized block design (RBD) with six treatments and four replications. The treatment is used in the form of a combination of organic ameliorants (straw and animal manure 10 tons ha-1 and straw, Azolla sp. and compost 7.5 tons ha-1) and solid and liquid biofertilizers with doses each of 10 kg ha-1  and 5 L ha-1.  Result showed that the soil treated with combination of organic ameliorant added Azolla sp with solid biofertilizer had higher C-organic content compared to other treatments. Whereas the aplication of organic ameliorant added with Azolla sp. combined with liquid biofertilizers has increased organic rice yield.

Abstract

National rice production in Indonesia is supported by two main rice-growing types—lowland (paddy) and upland (dryland) rice. Lowland rice contributes a larger share to national rice productionthan upland rice. However, several constraints in lowland rice cultivation may hinder efforts to furtherincrease its productivity. One alternative approach to address these constraints is the development ofupland rice cultivation. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of urea fertilizerdosage and nitrogen-fixing bacteria (NFB) applied with different carrier materials (compost, amixture of compost and rice bran, and Azolla) on the growth and yield of upland rice grown onInceptisols in Jatinangor. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with twofactors: urea fertilizer dosage (100% and 50% of the recommended rate) and the application ofnitrogen-fixing bacteria using various carrier materials (compost, rice bran, and Azolla meal) as wellas a liquid culture without a carrier. The results demonstrated that the effect of urea dosage wasindependent of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria applied using carrier materials. Individually, thetreatments were not significantly affected the population of Azotobacter spp. and Azospirillum spp.,plant height, number of panicles, or 1,000-grain weight of upland rice. However, the nitrogen-fixingbacteria inoculation with a mixed carrier (compost, rice bran, and Azolla) significantly increased filledgrain weight, resulting in the highest average filled grain yield of 37.30 g per plant.

Abstract

Inceptisols merupakan ordo tanah yang tersebar luas di Indonesia. Lahan Inceptisols menjadi pilihan yang potensial untuk kegiatan pertanian karena luasan totalnya yang cukup besar. Salah satu kendala dalam pemanfaatan tanah Inceptisols ialah sifatnya yang kurang subur dengan kandungan nitrogen (N) yang rendah. Solusi dari permasalahan tersebut salah satunya ialah pengaplikasian bakteri endofitik penambat N. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh inokulasi tiga jenis bakteri endofitik penambat nitrogen (Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus corrig (GD1), G. diazotrophicus VTH-Ai80 (GD2), dan Paraburkholderia, sp.) dengan tiga teknik aplikasi yang berbeda (perendaman benih, penyiraman tanah, dan kombinasinya) terhadap pertumbuhan tanaman, populasi bakteri endofitik, dan bobot kering tanaman tomat pada tanah Inceptisols asal Jatinangor. Penelitian dilaksanakan di Rumah Kaca Percobaan Bale Tatanen dan Laboratorium Biologi Tanah Departemen Ilmu Tanah dan Sumber Daya Lahan, Fakultas Pertanian, Universitas Padjadjaran Jatinangor, Kabupaten Sumedang, Jawa Barat pada bulan Oktober s.d. Desember 2023. Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan yaitu Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) yang terdiri 10 kombinasi perlakuan dengan 3 ulangan dan 3 subsampel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian bakteri endofitik penambat N dengan teknik aplikasinya berpengaruh nyata pada tinggi tanaman 1 MST dan bakteri endofitik bagian akar, tetapi tidak berpengaruh nyata pada pengamatan lainnya. Perlakuan G. diazotrophicus VTH-Ai80 + Perendaman Benih + Penyiraman Tanah merupakan perlakuan yang lebih baik dalam meningkatkan tinggi tanaman 1 MST. Perlakuan G. diazotrophicus corrig + Penyiraman Tanah merupakan perlakuan yang lebih baik dalam meningkatkan populasi bakteri endofitik pada bagian akar tanaman tomat. Perlakuan G. diazotrophicus VTH-Ai80 + Penyiraman Tanah merupakan perlakuan terbaik dalam peningkatan indeks klorofil daun tanaman tomat.

Abstract

Jatinangor Inceptisols are formed from volcanic material with a high concentration of iron oxide and a low concentration of phosphorus (P), which leads to high rates of P fixation and low P fertilization efficiency. The situation is exacerbated by intensive agricultural practices. This research was conducted to assess the effect of humic acid derived from low rank coal (AHL) as a soil conditioner in enhancing P availability and chili response in P-deficient Inceptisols. The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse of the Soil Chemistry and Plant Nutrition Laboratory at Universitas Padjadjaran. AHL treatments were combined with various doses of SP-36 fertilizer to evaluate their direct and indirect effects on soil chemical properties, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) populations, P uptake, and plant responses. The results showed that AHL application did not cause metal toxicity symptoms and significantly increased potential P, available P, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and total PSB populations. The best results were obtained with a combination of AHL at 30 kg ha?¹ and SP-36 at 125 kg ha?¹, which optimally enhanced P dynamics and chili yields. AHL was proven to reduce the need for inorganic P fertilizer by up to 50% without compromising chili yield or quality. These findings indicate that AHL has great potential to be developed as a locally sourced soil conditioner to support sustainable agriculture and the use of more environmentally friendly low-rank coal.

Abstract

The use of N2-fixing bacteria and growth hormone-producing rhizobacteria delivers nitrogen, enhances nutrients absorption by plants, and reduces the usage of inorganic fertilizers. Implementing biofertilizer in the hydroponic system as a means to reduce application of synthetic nutrient is recently in interest due to economic, food safety, and sustainability factors. This study determines the effects of biofertilizer dose on tomato yields in the hydroponics system. A randomized block design was utilized that consisted of seven treatments, namely 100% inorganic fertilizer and 0% biofertilizer (control), and various doses of inorganic nutrient combined with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% biofertilizer. The result illustrated that the application of biofertilizer augmented the population of endophytic bacteria, Azotobacter sp., Azospirillum sp., phosphate solubilizing bacteria, and nitrogen content. The distinct combination of biofertilizer did not alter the phosphorus and potassium content compared to control samples however resulted in superior tomato grade. The 50% inorganic fertilizer and 100% biofertilizer combination amplified the weight of the fruit by 36% compared to the control. This finding indicates that the application of biofertilizers in the hydroponic system for tomato plants is not only beneficial in minimizing the dosage of inorganic fertilizers but also enhancing the fruit quality.

Abstract

Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination is a critical environmental issue in tropical soils. This study evaluated the effects of Azotobacter sp. and two bulking agents: rice husk biochar (RHB) and spent oyster mushroom substrate (SOMS),  on a microcosm scale of petroleum-contaminated Ultisols. The experiment design used a randomized block design (RBD). Treatments included single and combined applications of Azotobacter sp. and bulking agents. Results showed that SOMS  amendment yielded significantly (p< 0.05) the highest microbial populations,  fungi (43.23 × 104 CFU g?¹) and bacteria (42.633 x 106 CFU g?¹), the highest degradation rate (0.040 mg L?¹ cell?¹ day?¹) and efficiency (81.62%) compared with the control (0.012 mg L?¹ cell?¹ day?¹; 39.55%). Azotobacter sp. inoculation combined with SOMS increased Azotobacter sp. density (59.167 × 104 CFU g?¹). Azotobacter sp. produced a biosurfactant that was dominated by Oleic acid. The hydrocarbon biodegradation rate improvements were linked to increased soil pH, nutrient availability, and biosurfactant production by Azotobacter sp. Meanwhile, RHB alone showed lower performance, but when combined with Azotobacter sp. improved degradation relative to the control. Integrating Azotobacter sp. inoculation with nutrient-rich bulking agents, particularly SOMS, significantly improves petroleum hydrocarbon biodegradation in Ultisols by optimizing physicochemical and biological conditions for indigenous microbial consortia.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of diazotrophic endophytic bacteria inoculation in liquid and microbeads formulations on the vegetative growth of maize (Zea mays L.). The experiment was conducted from September 2025 to March 2026 at the Soil Biology Laboratory and Ciparanje Experimental Field, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran. The study used a Randomized Block Design consisting of seven treatments and four replications. Treatments included liquid and microbeads biofertilizers containing Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus strain GD 3-1, Paraburkholderia sp. strain GD 12-2, and their consortium. Observed parameters included plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, intensity of plant pest disturbance, and stem endophytic bacterial population. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Scott-Knott test at a 5% significance level using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 21. The results showed that biofertilizer application significantly affected maize growth at the late vegetative stage. Liquid formulation of G. diazotrophicus produced the highest plant height at 8 weeks after planting, while microbeads formulation showed more stable growth responses during the observation period. Biofertilizer treatments also increased leaf area and stem endophytic bacterial population compared with the control treatment. In addition, inoculated plants showed better tolerance to pest attacks during the vegetative stage. Overall, the application of diazotrophic endophytic bacteria, particularly G. diazotrophicus, demonstrated potential to improve maize vegetative growth and support sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract

The effectiveness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as a biofertilizer in enhancing plant growth is influenced by environmental factors that can inhibit germination and reduce spore viability. Encapsulation using alginate as a coating material, combined with audiosonic stimulation, may improve spore protection and physiological activity. This study was conducted from October 2025 to February 2026 at the Soil Biology Laboratory, Department of Soil Science and Land Resources, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran, to evaluate the interaction between alginate concentration and audiosonic treatment on AMF spore germination and viability. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six treatments and three replicates. Alginate concentrations consisted of 1%, 2%, and 3%, while the audiosonic treatments included no audiosonic exposure and exposure to 8 kHz at a duration of 8 hours per day. The results showed a significant interaction between alginate concentration and audiosonic treatment on AMF viability. The 2% alginate concentration resulted in the greatest spore viability. Abstract

Pada sistem hidroponik, pemberian pupuk anorganik dan pupuk hayati dilakukan untuk meningkatkan hasil tanaman karena pupuk anorganik menyediakan unsur hara dan pupuk hayati menghasilkan fitohormon yang meningkatkan pertumbuhan tanaman. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian pupuk hayati yang dikombinasikan dengan pupuk anorganik terhadap populasi bakteri pelarut fosfat, kandungan fosfat (P) dan hasil tanaman tomat. Penelitian ini dilakukan menggunakan rancangan acak kelompok (RAK) dengan 7 perlakuan kombinasi pupuk anorganik (konsentrasi 100%, 75%, dan 50%), pupuk hayati (konsentrasi 100%, 75%, 50%, dan 25%) 4 ulangan. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara statistik untuk melihat pengaruh perlakuan. Hasil percobaan menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi pupuk anorganik dan pupuk hayati menunjukkan hasil yang tidak berbeda nyata terhadap populasi bakteri pelarut fosfat, kandungan P, dan hasil tanaman tomat pada sistem hidroponik.

Abstract

Sistem hidroponik NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) merupakansalah satu sistem penanaman dengan mekanisme pemberian air yang dapatmerendam akar tanaman setinggi 3 mm. Pada sistem hidroponik,kandungan pupuk anorganik yang terdapat pada media merupakan penyedia unsur hara utama bagi tanaman. Penggunaan pupuk hayati diharapkan dapat mengurangi dosis pupuk anorganik yang diaplikasikanpada sistem hidroponik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dosisterbaik kombinasi pupuk hayati dan pupuk anorganik dalam meningkatkanpopulasi Azotobacter, kandungan N, dan hasil tanaman pakcoy padahidroponik sistem NFT. Penelitian telah dilaksanakan di LaboratoriumFakultas Pertanian Universitas Padjadjaran. Percobaan ini menggunakanRancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK) yang terdiri dari kombinasi empatperlakuan yaitu pupuk anorganik (100%, 75%, dan 50%) + 100% pupukhayati (150 mL).
