Abstract

Abstract

In this work, naturally available moringa oleifera leaves (also known as horseradish trees or drumstick trees) are chosen as a heterogeneous catalyst in the transesterification for biodiesel production from palm oil. The dry moringa oleifera leaves are calcinated at 700 °C for 3 hours to improve their adsorbing property. The calcinated catalyst characterization analysis from XRD and EDX highlights the presence of calcium, potassium, and other elements. Response surface method (RSM) optimization and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling were carried out to elucidate the interaction effect of significant process variables on biodiesel yield. The results show that a maximum biodiesel yield of 92.82% was achieved at optimum conditions of catalyst usage (9 wt.%), molar ratio, methanol to triglyceride (7:1), temperature (50 °C) and reaction time (120 min). The catalyst usage (wt.%) was identified as a significant process variable, followed by the molar ratio. Furthermore, the biodiesel’s significant fuel properties in terms of thermal, physical, chemical, and elemental match the established standards of ASTM. Finally, when the catalyst was reused for five cycles, more than 50% of the biodiesel yield was achieved.

Abstract

Only a few countries in the world have rich energy resources like Indonesia which owns practically all-natural energy resources, including biological resources. Japan, a country renowned for its technological advancements, lacks sufficient land to cultivate crops used as raw materials for biofuels. Several countries near the north pole, do not expose to sunlight throughout the year like Indonesia, which impacted to development of solar energy to provide electricity. Therefore, this short article reviews the three main energy sources available in Indonesia for the transportation sector, which include: natural gas and coal as new energy sources; natural energy for electricity and hydrogen supply, and energy from biological sources.

Abstract

A city car is needed to overcome congestion and parking spaces in urban areas. However, currently, the body design of the city car is still experiencing problems, namely the value of the large drag coefficient, which causes an increase in fuel consumption. This study aims to design a city car body with two passengers that is more aerodynamic so as to minimize fuel use. This research method is a numerical simulation model using the ANSYS fluent students version 2021. Parameters in the form of drag coefficient values, velocity streamlines and velocity contours on the city car are aerodynamic aspects that are analyzed. The results show that the dimensions of the designed city car have a length of 2.59 m, a width of 1.6 m, and a height of 1.52 m by considering the ergonomic parameters and comfort of the user so that it fits the character of the people in Indonesia. In addition, from the independence grid analysis performed, the value of the number of meshes that have the smallest error value is obtained, namely mesh C (the number of meshes is 129,635). Mesh C has an error of 7.2%. It was found that as the velocity increases, the value of the drag coefficient (CD) produced is relatively smaller. In a city car with a velocity of 10 m/s, the drag coefficient value is 0.599, at a velocity of 20 m/s, the drag coefficient value is 0.594, and a velocity of 30 m/s is a drag coefficient value of 0.591.

Abstract

In recent years, there have been many studies on the widespread use of liquid fuels derived from biomass. A common emphasis in such studies is on fewer exhaust gas emissions and the expansion of renewable fuel production. Biodiesel is considered to be an important type of biomass fuel that is already produced commercially. But the production of biodiesel is laborious and comprises combination of several chemical processes. This study examines the effects of using oil used in biodiesel production with oxygen-rich chemicals on combustion (in-cylinder pressure (Cp), heat release rate (HRR), rate of pressure rise (RoPR), and cumulative heat release (CHR)), exhaust emission values, energy and exergy analysis. In this study, the effects of butyl di glycol use were also investigated and compared with commercially used ethanol and n-butanol. A transesterification method produced from canola oil the biodiesel used in the experiments. The experimental fuels were mixed volumetrically. For this purpose, experiments were carried out with canola biodiesel produced at 20% (D80B20) in diesel fuel and the results of the experiments were recorded. Under the same conditions, experiments were carried out by adding ethanol (D60C20E20), n-butanol (D60C20B20), butyl di glycol (D60C20G20) at a rate of 20% by volume to the canola oil added to the diesel fuel. The lowest values in terms of thermal and exergy efficiency were obtained in D60C20G20 fuel at all engine loads. Also, the highest entropy generation was calculated at all engine loads for this fuel blend.

Abstract

During this time, the AFR control systems on the Ligh Duty Vehicles (LDVs) generally only engage the engine condition, such as manifold pressure, engine speed. In fact, fuel consumption is not only influenced by the engine dynamics but also influenced by outside factors such as gear position (transmission) and vehicle speed. Therefore, this paper presents a simulation to control the Air to Fuel Ratio (AFR) on Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) engine that accommodated engine dynamics, vehicle speed dynamics, and gear position dynamics (transmission). Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) was selected for AFR modeling because of the engine work in a non-linear condition. The simulation results show that the model developed is able to control the AFR on the vehicle speed changes. Even, the system is able to perform fuel cut-off at the time of deceleration from high speeds.

Abstract

This article presents a research review of automotive vocational lecturers in Indonesia obtained from google scholar during 2016-2018. We found more than 500 articles on google scholar produced by 277 lecturers from automotive vocational programs. However, through data filtering, there are only 208 publications related to automotive, including the development of learning media in VHE. Looking at the world automotive research trend (which leads to major issues regarding battery systems, downsizing and turbocharging, and advanced combustion modes), and with concerns about the availability of fossil energy, major and fundamental reforms are needed for research activities in automotive vocational lecturers in Indonesia, both in terms of topic and depth of research material. As a recommendation, stakeholders in automotive vocational programs in universities should immediately form a research roadmap together and form a national automotive research consortium in order to contribute in realizing environmentally friendly vehicle technology and a sustainable national transportation system.

Abstract

One of the effects of increasing the number of vehicles is the presence of scrap tires. Stacking and burial of scrap tires have caused serious problems for the environment. Therefore, this article presents a brief review of the potential of scrap tires to be useful materials and products. Of the many potential uses, we find at least three ways to use the scrap tires, which are: converted to rubber powder to be reprocessed as asphalt mixture, concrete mixtures, composite mixes, fillers, and the like; converted to liquid oil through the pyrolysis process; and recycled forms, where the original physical properties of used tires are still visible, such as for furniture, wave breakers, racing circuit safety, and the like.

Abstract

The center of gravity (CoG) on the minibus is one of the fundamental parameters that affect the operation of the vehicle to maintain traffic safety. CoG greatly affects vehicle maneuverability due to load transfer between the front and rear wheels, such as when turning, braking, and accelerating. Therefore, this research was conducted to evaluate the operational safety of minibusses produced by the domestic car body industry. The case study was conducted on a minibus with a capacity of 30 passengers to be used in a mining area. Investigations on CoG were carried out based on the minibus specification data, especially the dimensions and forces acting on the wheels. Minibusses as test objects were categorized in two conditions, namely without passengers and with 30 passengers. The test results are expressed in a coordinate system (x, y, z) which represents the longitudinal, lateral, and vertical distances to the center of the front wheel axle. CoG coordinate values without passengers are (2194.92; 7.11; 1327.97) mm and CoG coordinates with full passengers (30 people) are (2388.52; 13.04; 1251.72) mm. The test results show that the change in CoG at full load is not significant which indicates the minibus is safe when maneuvering under normal conditions.
