Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine how Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) manage and redesign their curricula to respond to the challenges of modernization and social change. The present study employs a qualitative research method of a phenomenological nature. This study was conducted at two educational institutions: the Pondok Pesantren Nurul Ummah Kotagede and the Pondok Pesantren Kotagede Hidayatul Mubtadi'ien (PPKHM). The informants in this study consist of the head of the Madrasah Diniyah, the deputy head of the curriculum department of the Madrasah Diniyah, and teachers at the Madrasah Diniyah. The data collection techniques employed in this study encompass in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis. The data analysis techniques employed the phenomenological data analysis model of Moustakas through researcher reflexivity, textual description, structural description, and extracting the 'essence' of informants' experiences, which reveal "what" and "how" they experience a phenomenon or concept under study. The research findings indicate that the modernization of management and curriculum design in Islamic education at Islamic boarding schools involves: Firstly, the integration of an educational system that combines the salafiyah (traditional) boarding school typology, which focuses on bandongan, sorogan, memorization, and learning methods based on the Kitab Kuning ‘Classical Islamic Texts’ as the primary reference in learning activities at the boarding school, with the Madrasah Diniyah Takmiliyah educational system, which has classical-based learning and includes levels and stages in the learning process, namely I'dad, Ula or Awwaliyah, Wustho, and Ulya, is of particular interest. Secondly, the institution has initiated a practice-based learning program for final-year students. This program is facilitated through community service, specifically via the PKR (Ramadan Activity Program). Additionally, the institution holds religious study sessions with the objective of developing knowledge and religious education for the community.

Abstract

This study analyzes: (1) the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) principles in the utilization of Education Reports, (2) school strategies for integrating Education Report results into planning and TQM-based quality improvement, and (3) supporting and inhibiting factors in the application of TQM related to the use of Education Reports as tools for sustainable and systematic quality enhancement at SMAS Santo Yosef and SMAN 4 Mandau, Bengkalis Regency. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with principals, teachers, education staff, school committee members, and students as subjects. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, with source and technique triangulation used to ensure credibility. Data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings show that both schools use Education Report data as a basis for planning and designing quality improvement programs, supported by strong collaboration among school stakeholders. Annual evaluations and follow-ups based on Education Reports help maintain consistency in quality improvement and strengthen a culture of continuous quality. However, limited time, resources, and uneven understanding of quality management roles hinder optimal TQM implementation, indicating the need for more systematic integration of TQM and more intensive evaluation cycles.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role of school principals in enhancing teachers' pedagogical competencies through the use of Information Technology (IT) in public elementary schools in Bukit Batu District. The main focus is on how principals motivate teachers and integrate IT to improve the quality of pedagogical competencies. A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to explore the experiences of principals and teachers related to motivation and the strengthening of competencies through IT. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document studies at SD Negeri 005 and SD Negeri 009 in Bukit Batu during the period from May to November 2025. The findings show that principals play a crucial role in enhancing pedagogical competencies through IT, such as initiating training and mentoring. However, challenges such as limited devices, unstable internet access, and teachers' readiness remain major obstacles. Supporting factors include regular training and support from the Education Office, while the main barriers are limited IT facilities, varied teacher skills, and differing motivation levels. To optimize the use of IT, improvements in facilities, more intensive training, and adequate technical support are needed.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) in Sekolah Ramah Anak (SRA), a national child-friendly school program in Indonesia, identifying supporting and inhibiting factors at SDN Ngupasan and SDN Tegalrejo 2 in Yogyakarta City. The study used a qualitative approach with a multiple-case design. The research subjects included the principal, the school committee, and students. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. Data analysis in this study used the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and verification. Data validity was verified through triangulation. The results showed that TQM has been implemented effectively through the principle of customer focus by accepting student and parent input, developing programs based on student interests and talents, involving all school members and related parties, and measuring quality through assessments, parent satisfaction surveys, and academic and non-academic achievement standards. The school's commitment is reflected in its vision, mission, short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals, as well as in continuous improvement based on measurement results. Supporting factors include active participation of the school community, cooperation between parents and related parties, the availability of child-friendly facilities and infrastructure, government support, funding, and training. Inhibiting factors include limited conceptual understanding, suboptimal parental support, limited facilities and funding, minimal training, resistance to change, bullying, and suboptimal data utilization. This research emphasizes the importance of TQM in creating SRA that are safe and comfortable for students.
