Abstract

This Research Aimed To See The Analysis Of Illocutial Speech Act On Instagram Posts And Comments Of Third Semester English Education Students At Hkbp Nommensen. After analyzing the illocutionary acts in the Instagram posts and comments of third-semester English Education students at Nommensen HKBP University, the following conclusions can be drawn: The illocutionary speech acts found in the data include assertives, directives, and expressives. The data was collected from the Instagram accounts of third-semester English Education students, that is, @Icaafrianisitorus, @givalentine_, @novia.as.564, and @cristina_nelvana. Each account focused on different topics. For example, one account focused on emotional expression and social identity, while another emphasized self-confidence and self-validation. Students use assertive acts to express their thoughts, present factual information, and share personal perspectives. Directive acts are employed to influence others' behavior, such as offering advice, making invitations, and encouraging participation in activities. Expressive acts reflect the speaker's emotional state and are used to convey feelings such as gratitude, encouragement, congratulations, and welcome. No commissive or declarative speech acts were found in the data. The most dominant type of illocutionary act found in the data is expressive. This type of speech act is used the most frequently, indicating that students primarily use Instagram for emotional expression, maintaining social connections, and strengthening interpersonal relationships. The prevalence of expressive acts emphasizes the affective nature of their digital communication, focusing on emotional support, social bonding, and self-expression. The absence of commissive and declarative speech acts is likely due to Instagram’s informal and personal nature as a platform, which does not require formal commitments or declarations. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that social media serves as more than just an information-sharing tool; it is a dynamic space for self- expression, emotional connection, and identity formation. The students’ linguistic choices reflect their inclination toward fostering interpersonal relationships, strengthening social bonds, and engaging in meaningful interactions rather than simply exchanging factual content. This highlights the evolving nature of digital communication, where social media platforms facilitate both personal expression and community engagement.

Abstract

This research explores the textual metafunction of the choir song "Elijah Rock" by Moses Hogan through the lens of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), employing Suzanne Eggins' model of analysis. By examining the song's lyrical structure, the study aims to uncover how thematic organization, cohesion, and information flow contribute to the overall meaning and emotional impact of the piece. The analysis identifies key thematic elements, such as the recurring motif of "Elijah," as topical theme; the use of other topical themes such as: “come on”, “tell”, “comin’ up”,  “Satan”; “He”; and “I”; the use of textual theme “if” and “Oh” highlights the extensive use of repetition and parallelism, which enhance textual coherence. Through a qualitative content analysis, the research demonstrates how linguistic features not only create a unified text but also resonate with the cultural and historical significance of African American spirituals. The findings reveal that the interplay between textual structure and musical expression plays a vital role in conveying the song's message and engaging audiences. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on the intersection of linguistics and music, offering valuable insights for future research in both fields.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the textual function in the Merdeka Belajar English textbook for 11th- grade vocational high school students using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach developed by M.A.K. Halliday. Employing a descriptive qualitative method and the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014), the study examines 37 sentences from exposition and image-based texts in Chapter 1 of the textbook. The analysis focuses on mood types and theme-rheme structures. The findings reveal that declarative mood is the most dominant (78.3%), highlighting the informative and explanatory nature of the texts. Interrogative (18.9%) are used rhetorically to engage readers, while one nominal fragment (2.7%) is also identified. All sentences (100%) contain a complete Theme–Rheme structure. Modal elements and finite verbal operators each appear in 16.2% of the data, indicating interpersonal interaction. Textual markers such as conjunctions (8.1%), conjunctive adjuncts (5.4%), and continuatives (2.7%) further support cohesion. This consistent use of thematic and mood structures supports coherence, facilitates reader comprehension, and enhances the effectiveness of the learning materials. The study provides insights for improving English textbook design tailored to vocational education needs. The analysis reveals that all three textual functions; Topical, Textual, and Interpersonal Themes are realized, with the Topical Theme being the most dominant. This highlights the text’s focus on clarity and structured information flow, while the minimal use of Interpersonal and Textual Themes reflects a formal, straightforward expository style.
