Abstract

Language planning policy is essential for language preservation, yet research rarely addresses vernacular or local languages specifically. This study examines how vernacular language planning policies can contribute to the preservation and revitalization of local languages, focusing on the case of Aceh, a province in Indonesia with a rich variety of local languages requiring preservation efforts. The study’s primary goal is to identify an effective framework for vernacular language planning in Aceh that can serve as a practical reference for language policymakers, planners, and researchers in Indonesia and beyond. Utilizing a systematic review method, this research analyzes literature on language vitality, endangerment, revitalization, and planning policy. Key findings reveal a newly developed vernacular language planning framework tailored to the current vitality status of Acehnese languages, offering a suitable model for their preservation and revitalization. This framework has the potential to serve as a foundational tool for efforts to sustain and revive Acehnese and other vernacular languages more broadly.

Abstract

Social media have reached a pivotal role in human’s daily lives; it can be a source of information and even a source of learning in the educational field. This study explores the techniques of content creators who use social media to provide engaging language learning materials to social media users. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data source is the os on the social media platform TikTok. This short-form video-sharing media study has two groups: high followers, as many as four accounts, and low followers, as many as nine accounts. There are 20 videos from each group. Each video is identified based on the theory of language teaching techniques. Then, the methods used by high and low followers are identified and described. This study found that the creators with high followers use communicative language teaching methods, precisely information gap and feedback type. Meanwhile, the creators with low followers base their content on a direct teaching method in which they tend to explain and give lectures to their audience. Hence, this finding is expected to be useful for English teachers, particularly in terms of adapting techniques to teach English in real-world language usage and idiomatic expressions often absent in traditional textbooks.

Abstract

This research was aimed at describing the extent to which the grade 10,11, and 12 students acquire the paragraph development of exposition paragraph writing and to describe the process of acquiring the paragraph development. The development of exposition paragraph was analyzed by following the theory of Knapp and Watkins (2009:152) that consists of text structure and lexico-grammar. The text structure is used to see the logical flow of ideas from the beginning until the end of the paragraph, while the lexico-grammar refers to the wordings to form meaning. To achieve the objectives of this study, this research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design which relied on words to describe the phenomena. The data was analyzed following Miles et.al’ s model. The research finding showed that first, the students from grade 10,11, and 12 had not acquired the development of exposition paragraph writing since they only put thesis statement, argument, but there was no conclusion. Second, the development of exposition paragraph could not be explained since the subjects did not relate the thesis statement to the argument and they did not provide conclusion. However, the development can be seen through the greater use of lexico-grammar from grade 10, 11 until 12.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study was conducted as an attempt to find out the effect of applying Predict, Organize, Rehearse, Practice, Evaluate (PORPE) strategy on students™ reading comprehension. This study used experimental design. The population of this study was students of Grade XI, Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas: SMA) Negeri 1 Lumbanjulu which consisted of 120 students. There were sixty students from the population taken as the sample in this study. The sample was divided into two randomized groups: experimental and control groups. The experimental group was taught by using PORPE strategy, while the control group was taught by using conventional method. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied Kuder Richardson 21 formula (KR-21). The result of the reliability was 0.81. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58 , t-observed value 2.8 > t-table value 2.00. The findings indicated that using PORPE strategy significantly affected the students™ reading comprehension. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Keywords: PORPE Strategy, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Students in general have difficulty in expressing their ideas in writing. This indicates that the teaching of writing is not yet successful. The lack of successis due to, among others, the dominance of theoretical explanation and discussionof how to develop good paragraphs and how to use punctuation correctly in classesof writing. Such teaching behavior may be urged by an underlying belief thatknowledge of writing and mastery of the language used are the main factorsdetermining writing ability. But current research results indicate that writing is acognitive process greatly determined by the thinking or reasoning ability. So theprocess of writing will be hindered when the process of reasoning experiences adead end or cognitive blocking. On the other hand, a reasoning process which runswell produces ideas which then demand expression. The pressure for expressionurges the owner of the ideas to study good language use and how to express ideas inan organized way. Therefore, the teaching of writing had better focus on improvingthinking quality and minimizing cognitive blocking. Keywords: the teaching of writing, cognitive blocking

Abstract

This study aims to describe the level of translation accuracy produced by DeepL in the film Inside Out 2 and compared it with the official subtitles. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the researcher selected 30 segments from the film's dialogues that contain various expressions, idioms, and contextual meanings. The accuracy of DeepL translations was assessed using the translation quality assessment model developed by Nababan, Nuraeni, and Sumardiono (2012), which classifies translations into three levels: accurate, moderately accurate, and inaccurate. The results showed that most of DeepL's translations felt into the "moderately accurate" category with total 67%, 17% as accurate and 17% also as inaccurate level. This was due to literal translation, misinterpretation of idiomatic expressions, and lack of contextual adaptation. In contrast, the official subtitles demonstrated higher accuracy by delivering contextually appropriate and culturally sensitive translations. These findings suggested that while DeepL offers grammatically fluent output, it still lacks the semantic and pragmatic sensitivity required for high-quality subtitle translation in films.
