Abstract

This systematic literature review examines specific digital tools such as mobile apps, online dictionaries, and social media platforms, evaluating their implementation and effectiveness in preserving endangered languages in Indonesia. Drawing from an analysis of ten scholarly publications spanning 2019 to 2023, key tools identified include the Android-based Lampung dictionary, "Nusantara in Your Hand" for Javanese and Madurese, and the Muyu-Indonesian-English Dictionary App. These tools engage communities through initiatives like the Balinese Language Digital Dictionary and BASAbali Wiki, utilizing platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube for cultural preservation. Implementation strategies encompass a variety of mediums: mobile apps tailored for Lampung, Javanese, and Madurese speakers; comprehensive online platforms like the Balinese Language Digital Dictionary and BASAbali Wiki; interactive resources such as LearnJavaneseOnline.com; and dynamic social media engagement on WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Utilizing modern technology, these tools document, teach, and sustain regional languages, enhancing accessibility and fostering community engagement. Their effectiveness lies in promoting community involvement, integrating into educational frameworks, and gaining support from governments and local communities, thus playing a crucial role in safeguarding Indonesia's linguistic heritage and cultural identity. In conclusion, digital tools present significant progress in preserving Indonesia's linguistic diversity, requiring strategies that address socio-cultural and technical challenges, prioritize community involvement, foster collaboration across sectors, improve digital infrastructure, and promote sustainable practices to ensure long-term success in language revitalization efforts.

Abstract

This study investigates the perspectives of teacher educators at SMP Putri Cahaya Medan regarding the integration of evidence-based teaching (EBT) into their classroom practices. Amid growing emphasis on utilizing research to enhance education, the gap between educational theory and practical implementation remains a critical concern. Using a mixed-methods approach, including interviews, surveys, and classroom observations, this research explores teacher educators’ attitudes, challenges, and strategies related to EBT. Findings indicate that while educators generally value research-informed practices, they face significant barriers such as time constraints, limited access to research, and conflicts between personal teaching philosophies and empirical findings. However, factors such as institutional support, collaborative learning environments, and contextual adaptation of research findings were identified as key enablers. The study concludes that systemic support and professional development are essential to empower teacher educators in effectively translating research evidence into meaningful teaching practices, thereby bridging the gap between research and classroom application.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the reading comprehension skills of seventh-grade students at SMP Nurul Hasaniah, Percut Sei Tuan by using the Webtoon application as a learning medium. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) following the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting stages across two cycles. The research instruments included reading comprehension tests, observation sheets, field notes, documentation, and brief interviews. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension. The average score increased from 56.8 in the pre-cycle to 71.2 in Cycle I, and to 83.4 in Cycle II. The percentage of students achieving the Minimum Mastery Criterion (≥ 70) rose from 24% to 68% in Cycle I, and reached 92% in Cycle II. The use of Webtoon also enhanced students’ motivation, engagement, and enthusiasm during reading activities. Its multimodal features—visuals, dialogues, and narrative structure—effectively supported students’ understanding of context, vocabulary, and storyline. Therefore, Webtoon can be considered an effective alternative digital learning medium for improving junior high school students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This qualitative study examines the integration of Canva as a digital learning tool to enhance English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ recount writing skills at the junior high school level. The study was conducted at SMP Shafiyyatul Amaliyyah and involved 30 seventh-grade students engaged in Canva-based writing projects. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, documentation of students’ written products, and open-ended questionnaires. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Canva fostered higher student engagement, improved organization of recount texts, stimulated creative expression, and enhanced learners’ confidence in writing English. Although challenges such as limited internet access and vocabulary constraints were observed, Canva proved to be an effective pedagogical tool when supported by appropriate instructional scaffolding. This study contributes to EFL writing pedagogy by providing qualitative evidence on the role of digital multimodal tools in genre-based writing instruction.

Abstract

This study explores how machine translation (MT) tools, particularly Google Translate, can be utilized to improve translation skills in writing among English Literature students. The participants of this research were ten English literature students. Employing a qualitative research with case study as the research design. The data were collected using in-depth interviews followed by observation and translation tasks. As digital tools become increasingly integrated into language learning, it is important to understand both the pedagogical benefits and limitations of MT in academic settings. This case study investigates how students use MT in translating literary and academic texts, how they evaluate the accuracy of MT outputs, and how they engage in post-editing to enhance their linguistic awareness and critical thinking. The findings are expected to provide practical insights for incorporating MT tools into translation teaching strategies while fostering students' autonomy and accuracy in translation.

Abstract

Cultural adjustments are essential in the translation process, particularly when translating from Indonesian to English, due to the unique cultural nuances, customs, and expressions inherent in each language. Without careful consideration, these elements can easily be lost in translation. One major challenge is the cultural differences between Indonesian and English. Another challenge is the distinction between formal and informal language usage in both languages. To address these challenges, translators need a profound understanding of both the source and target languages and cultures. They must be well-versed in the cultural norms, customs, and expressions of both languages and adapt them appropriately in their translations. This study examines the translation techniques used to achieve cultural adjustments when translating Indonesian texts into English and how these adjustments are realized by the translator. A qualitative approach is employed, specifically descriptive research, aiming to provide a detailed description of existing translations. The data source for this research is the translation work of an English lecturer at the University Prima Indonesia. The translation techniques identified include adaptation, adoption uptake, common/established equivalence, discursive creation, compensation, and variation. The findings indicate that adoption uptake is the predominant technique used by the translator to achieve cultural adjustments from Indonesian to English.

Abstract

This study evaluates the translation accuracy of the English-Indonesian bilingual children’s storybook Purple and Walter: Save the Trees using the Back-Translation method to ensure its reliability for bilingual education. Employing a qualitative descriptive design with textual analysis, the research analyzed 65 linguistic units comprising sentences and dialogue segments following the four-step "circular" validation procedure (Forward Translation, Review, Blind Back-Translation, and Comparison) proposed by Yu et al. (2003). The data were further assessed using Nababan’s (2012) translation accuracy framework. The findings indicate a high level of semantic consistency, with 0% (0 units) falling into Low Accuracy, 27.7% (18 units) categorized as Moderate Accuracy, 52.3% (34 units) as High Accuracy, and 20.0% (13 units) as Very High Accuracy. Results demonstrate that while the core message and narrative function remain stable (72.3% total High/Very High accuracy), Moderate Accuracy units reveal a consistent pattern of stylistic reduction, where descriptive intensity and double emphasis (e.g., "tiny little") are simplified for audience adaptation. This study concludes that the Back-Translation method serves as a rigorous "diagnostic filter" for detecting subtle meaning shifts that traditional direct comparisons may overlook. The high semantic reliability of the text confirms its effectiveness for literacy development, though a balance between readability and the preservation of stylistic richness is recommended for future bilingual materials.
