Abstract

The aim of this study was to increase the killing power of Lecanicillium lecanii through (1) regulation of chitinase synthesis and (2) finding compatible pesticides to be applied together with L. lecanii. Analysis of the role of chitinase on the pathogenicity of L. lecanii was carried out through the selection of basal media composition, optimization of culture conditions (media pH, temperature and incubation period), and bioassay against soybean pod sucking pest Riptortus linearis. Meanwhile, the compatibility test of fungi with pesticides was carried out by growing the fungus on PDA media added with fungicides with the active ingredients of carbendazine, triadimefon, methyl thiophanate, kaptan, iprodion, and mankozeb. The results showed that L. lecanii grown on I basal media, pH 5, temperature 30 oC, and an incubation period of 5 or 6 days was able to optimally increase chitinase activity. Bioassays on R. linearis showed a mortality of up to 80% at 3 days after application. The pathogenicity of L lecanii in this study is much more significant than in previous research reports. In the second study, the compatibility test with pesticides showed that L. lecanii was compatible with pesticides with the active ingredients of mancozeb. Pesticides with the active ingredients of kaptan, iprodione, carbendazine, triadimefon, and methyl thiophanate are toxic (strongly inhibit) the growth of L. lecanii colonies. The two findings of this study indicate that L. lecanii has good prospects as a bioinsecticide in terms of increasing its pathogenicity and compatibility with pesticides

Abstract

The challenges of finding interesting and interactive teaching materials is one of the causes of low science learning outcomes. Accordingly, this study formulates valid, practical, and effective flipbook-based e-modules for improving junior high school students' science learning outcomes. The Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE development model was adopted. Then, the effectiveness of proposed e-modules in improving cognitive learning outcomes through pretest and posttest questions was measured. The garnered data was analyzed using the t-test and N-Gain. The material aspect was declared valid with 87% accuracy, while the media aspect yielded 84% accuracy, falling under the valid category. The practicality test for the e-module conducted by involving the teacher resulted in a 97% score in the practical category. Similarly, the readability test conducted by involving the students resulted in a 93% score in the practical category. The analysis of the test results indicated a significant difference in cognitive learning outcomes before and after using flipbook-based e-modules, with a sig value of 0.000 < a = 0.05. The N-Gain test yielded a value of 0.70 in the medium criteria, placing the level of effectiveness in the moderately effective category. These results suggest that the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model, facilitated by flipbook-based interactive e-modules in learning activities, can enhance the science learning outcomes of junior high school students.

Abstract

The critical and creative thinking skills (CCTs) of junior high school students remain at a low level. Following this phenomenon, this research was conducted to explore the potential of the Problem Based-Learning model (PBL) to enhance students' CCTs, using a single class with a single group pretest-posttest design involving the ninth-grade students from State Junior High School in Malang, Indonesia. The sample was selected using the purposive sampling technique. Data was gathered through evaluation instruments in the form of pretest and posttest results. In addition to the aforementioned instruments, teaching modules and student worksheets were employed in the data collection process. The data analysis was performed using a number of tests, including the Shapiro-Wilk data normality test, Wilcoxon test, and N-Gain test. In particular, these tests were carried out to evaluate changes in scores. The research findings indicated that the implementation of PBL was effective and significantly successful in improving students' thinking skills, especially their CCTs. This is evidenced by the Wilcoxon test results, which resulted a significance value of less than 0.05, as well as a high N-Gain increase for critical thinking (0.7001) and a medium category for creative thinking (0.5826). Therefore, these findings can serve as recommendations concerning the role of PBL in improving students' two thinking skills (CCTs).

Abstract

The objective of this study was to ascertain the impact of critical thinking skills on the learning outcomes of junior high school students, with the Self- Organized Learning Environment (SOLE) learning model serving as the experimental framework. The research methodology employed was quasi- experimental, with a research design of nonequivalent control group design. In this study, the experimental class was Grade 8 A Class, while the control class was Grade 8 C class. The SOLE learning model demonstrated a statistically significant effect on critical thinking skills and learning outcomes, as evidenced by the t-test results with a value of 0.05 < 0.000. The N-gain score for the SOLE learning model revealed that 51.5% of the learning outcomes were less effective, while 56.8% of the critical thinking skills were moderately effective. In contrast, the control class in the Discovery Learning learning model achieved 32.3% in learning outcomes and 38.2% in critical thinking skills, both of which were ineffective. The results of the research indicate that critical thinking skills and junior high school science learning outcomes are significantly influenced by the SOLE learning model.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills (CTS) can be enhanced through instructional models. The chosen model should be problem-based and student-centered. The problem based learning (PBL) and search, solve, create, and share (SSCS) models meet these criteria. This study aims to compare the potential of the PBL and SSCS models to enhance students' CTS on the topics of soil and life sustainability. Data collection techniques included interviews, questionnaires, observations, and tests. Data analysis techniques involved descriptive quantitative techniques, percentage analysis, validity and reliability tests, normality tests, homogeneity tests, Wilcoxon tests, and N-gain tests. The validation of the devices received very valid criteria. The N-gain test in the PBL class received moderate criteria, and the SSCS class received high criteria. The results showed that both models could improve students' CTS, but the two classes had different levels of CTS improvement. The treatment using the SSCS model resulted in higher CTS compared to the treatment using the PBL model. The PBL model can enhance higher CTS in the inference aspect, while the SSCS model can enhance higher CTS in the interpretation, explanation, and self-regulation aspects
