Abstract

ABSTRACTLubuk Terentang Village is one located near Indragiri River, Riau Province. Indragiri river is a habitat for several types of fish, one of which is the baung fish (Hemibagrus nemurus). The population of baung fish in the river is threatened due to former mining in the upstream area of the Indragiri River. This study was conducted to determine the stock of baung fish population at a certain time. The population of baung fish stock was calculated through the estimation of the area emptying method or the Depletion Methods. The results showed that the initial population (No) of baung fish (H. nemurus) in the Indragiri River, Lubuk Terentang Village in August 2020 was 836 kg and the final population (Nt) was 798 kg. The maximum value of baung fish that can be exploited is 418 kg per month, and the optimal effort is 14 units of net. Keywords:Catfish,Depletion Methods,Fish stock, Hemibagrus nemurus,  Indragiri River

Abstract

AbstractIn the Koto Panjang Dam, Riau there are more than 1582fish floating cages present.  Fish feed spilled from the cage is believed to affect the diet of wild endemic fishes inhabit the dam. To understand the effect of the cage on the diet of the endemic, a study has been conducted on May to September 2013. There were 5 sampling sites, 2 sites located in the natural area that there is no cage (St 1Na and St2 Na) and the others (3 Ka, 4 Ka and 5 Ka) were in the area around the cage. Fishes were sampled hourly, for a 24 hour period and their stomach content was analyzed. Results shown that there were 31 species of endemic fishes such as Puntius schwanenfeldii, Macrones nemurus, Hampala bimaculata, Osteochillus hasselti, Rasbora vaillanti, Tynnichtys vaillanti, Ophiocephalus melanosoma, Chela oxygastroides, Cyclocheilichthys heteronema, Notopterus chilata, Puntius bramoidesandCyclocheilichtys apogon. Among these fishes, however, only P. schwanenfeldii that greatly affected by the presence of the aquaculture activities as the stomach of fish living around the cage was filled with fish feed pellets (more than 90%). The fish living in the area with no cage, however, filled with animal and plant remains. This fact indicates that the P.  schwanenfeldii is an opportunist fish that is able to change their diet into fish feed pellets. Based on data obtained, it can be concluded that the presence of fish floating cage aquaculture activities affect certain fish species only.Key words: Fish floating cage, Puntius schwanenfeldii, Koto Panjang Dam, endemic fish, fish feed pellet

Abstract

The presence of fish cage culture activities may affects the environmentalcondition as the remain of fish feed pellets may enter the surrounding water and itmay serve as food resources for wild fish species such as Puntius schawanefeldi .To understand the impact of fish floating cage activities on feeding habit of P.schawanefeldi and economical condition of traditional fishermen in the KotoPanjang Dam, a study has been conducted on April to June 2013. Fish sampleswere collected from 5 stations, Stations 1, 2 and 3 were in the dam, around thecage, while station 4 and 5 were in the area that has no cage. Data of 24 hoursfish feeding habit were obtained by capturing fish for a 3 days period (once/ 3hours, at different time). Stomach content was then removed, identified andanalyzed using a volumetric method. Results shown that the stomach content offish living around the cage and the fish living far from the cage are different.Stomach content of the fish from the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd stations was dominated byfish feed pellet remains (>90%), while that of the fish living in the area with nocage was dominated by debris (>90%). These facts indicate P. schawanefeldi is anopportunist fish, its feeding habit is changing. Fish living around the cage preferto feed on commercial fish feed pellet remains. The presence of P. schawanefeldiaround the cage, however, increase the income of traditional fishermen as theyable to caught around 50 – 80 kg of fish/ week, compare to 10 – 20 kg fish/ weekin the 4 th and 5 th stations. Data obtained indicate that the presence of fish cageaffect the feeding habit of P. schawanefeldi and positively affect the income of thetraditional fishermen. Keywords: Puntius schawanefeldi, feeding habit, fish floating cage, KotoPanjang Dam

Abstract

Periphyton is a type of algae that commonly inhabit the surface of immersed objects. A research aims to understand the periphyton community (types and abundance) in the floating-net cage in the Koto Panjang Dam has been conducted from May to June 2015. Samplings were conducted 3 times in 3 stations, namely St. I (Tanjung Alai, 50-200 cages), St. II (Pulau Gadang, 200-500 cages) and St. III (Dam Site , 500-700 cages). Periphyton samples were taken by scraping the surface of the immersed cage using tooth brush (10x10 cm2). Periphyton collected were then preserved in lugol 2-3 drop/40 ml and then was identified based on Hiroyuki (1977), Yunfang (1995), Sachlan (1982) and Bellinger and Sigee (2010).Result shown that there were 49 periphyton species present and they are belonged to 6 classes, namely Bacillariophyceae (15 species), Chlorophyceae (18 species), Chrysophyceae (1 species), Cyanophyceae (13 species), Dinophyceae (1 species) and Xanthophyceae (1 species) and the periphyton abundance was 35,945-60,690 cells/ cm2). In general, the H’ was 4.694-4.974; C was 0.038-0.052 and E was 0.890-0.917. The water quality parameters are as follows: temperature was 30-31 0C; brightness was 100.5-139.0 cm; turbidity was 1.50-2.68 FTU; pH was 5-6; DO was 5.6-6.0 mg/L; free CO2 was 3.9-4.5 mg/L; nitrate was 0.045-0.050 mg/L and phosphate was 0.035-0.041 mg/L. Based on periphyton community it can be concluded that the aquatic environment in the Koto Panjang Dam balance.Keyword : Peryphyton,Koto Panjang Dam, Kampar
